So, aside from esports which is kind of a Marmite approach to filling the current gap in motorsport, I must admit I've enjoyed spending some time watching old races on Sky F1. I'm currently watching the 91 Brazillian GP. What an era! The cars look so beautiful to my eyes, sound astonishing compared to modern F1 cars and the drivers are simply fighting them all the time. The cars are twitching, the onboard shots show they working away at the wheel in every corner.

I know I've said this before and will again, but one of the biggest reasons I think the regs are problematic is the fact that nowadays, if a car twitches a little, the commentators get exciting and the TV coverage shows multiple slow motion replays of it. If they did this back in the 90's the race would be one complete series of replays due to the amount of sliding around.

It's brilliant.

Totally agree, it's something I noticed when watching Indy Car last year. The racing looks so much better when the cars are sliding a little, right on the edge of adhesion. The current F1 cars may be devilishly fast but they are nowhere near as exciting to watch, as the massive aero grip makes them look like they are on rails and you barely even get a sense that there is a human being operating the thing.

The obsession with ever more complex aerodynamics since around the mid-1990s has been a disaster for F1 on so many levels and no one within the sport even recognises it.

I agree. I think there's an issue with a lot of people in the world thinking that the 1 in F1 means it has to be the fastest at all times. By ensuring F1 cars have the fastest lap times compared to other forms of motorsport, there's a belief that grip is the be all and end all. Sadly, that means the cars are on rails. Watching early 90's racing looks amazing and the fact that the cars would get destroyed by modern machinery doesn't bother me at all.

Now, I'm not for slowing the sport down dramatically, but a little less grip and certainly reducing braking ability would help a lot imo.
