How would people feel about over-the-winter seasons?

Post by Alienturnedhuman »

One option I have not seen proposed, but seems like a good way of dealing with the impact of the delays, would be to post pone the season start until June, and then reschedule the calendar with the summer break over Christmas, run the southern hemisphere / middle eastern / other climate appropriate races in October through March. Then have a 2-3 month shut down and start the next season in May.

The seasons could then continue as an over the winter event, either indefinitely, but as a series of 11 month cycles slowly bringing it back in line with the original calendar (probably by about 2025)

How would people feel about this if it was to be suggested officially / happen?

I'd prefer not. Assuming it's possible to still hold the minimum number of required races after quarantines and lockdowns begin to lift, I would prefer for the season to be finished as normal and the next one to begin as normal.

I voted that I wouldn't mind either way, but in my head it would be a nightmare contract-wise

I like it.
However what I think will happen is there will be no races until the summer, Canada, Britain or France. Start the season then and if there is only 10 races in 2020 instead of 22 so be it.
2021 hopefully back to normal starting in Melbourne.

It's a totally impractical idea. The winter weather would make it impossible to hold races in Europe. The problems with race dates changing from year to year would be a nightmare for organisers, promoters and TV companies. The teams' development schedules would be shot to pieces. All drivers' contracts would need to be re-negotiated. Do I need to go on?

If it starts in June that's about 30 weeks until the end of the year so that's a minimum 15 races, through in some double headers and 18 races is easily doable.

I'd be fine with it. I just want to watch F1 races. I'm not bothered what time of year they are.

There is actually historical precedent for running races over the European winter... albeit not part of the F1 championship.

I've just looked at the calendar and if F1 starts in June that still leaves 16 scheduled races left to run without having to reschedule postponed races, 16 races in itself is plenty of races to make up a season.

I'd absolutely be up for that.

Living in Scotland with the crap weather you need to make the most of the meagre summers so I've always had a problem sitting in front of a TV watching F1 on a sunny afternoon so the more winter races the better as far as I'm concerned.

are you considering that all teams must build a new car under new regs for next season ? sports are just cancelled until further notice, everywhere. shorter seasons, if any season at all, for all of them

More wet weather races! :-P

I'd be up for the idea. However, I would still prefer a short season of 12 races or so if still possible. Would probably mean a much tighter championship fight, and it would be extremely likely to go down to the wire.

I don't think it would be the best answer. It will be difficult finding tracks with appropriate climates during the winter, since anywhere it might snow would have to be avoided, and it would also create an extremely short winter break before the next season.

From a purely fan perspective I wouldn't mind it, but I think there are too many logistical issues for it to be practical.
