Renault in black then, but just for testing. I do like the air duct shape above the driver:

There are some weird devices on that Racing Point:

I have never seen these things. On a separate note, that nose is very Mercedes like, isn't it?

If anyone is looking for live updates, I find the GP Today website has the best stats (has both laps completed and fastest times):

https://www.gptoday.net/en/live/f1/2541 ... st-in-2020

But Autosport has the better commentary:

I've put a cheeky bet on either Carlos or Lando to win the championship, 250/1 and 500/1 respectively. Worth a tenner I think.

Williams are already beating their qualifying time from the 2019 Spanish Grand Prix. I'm not expecting much, but that is at least somewhat encouraging.

My completely way, way too early, non-scientific comparison of the day (so far) vs the end of Day 1 in 2019:

Image

Source: Me.

If (a big if) this continues, we could have a closing up of the field.

I mean, we probably won't, but it's nice to dream.

If Mercedes are doing what they did last year and not showing their true pace then everyone might as well go home

FWIW, still expecting a fairly close battle between the top three.

Well Williams already do look like they've worked a bit better than last year. Hope so, as it's not a pretty sight to see them so far back as last year. At least if they can fight with others it would be nice.

Not a lot to take away thus far. Most still doing C1/C2/C3 runs. Comparison with last year also hard because I seem te remember it was quite a bit colder? They are not that far away from last year pole so slight indication that they have progressed well in terms of overall speed vs last year.

But all in all I'm just happy to see cars going around again! Most liveries have worked out well too, looking good on track.

Ferrari are sandbagging surely... Also verstappen had a few spins already, seems not great first impressions

Williams and McLaren tho, fair play to those, especially Williams seem to be in a really good place compare to last year

Merc did a 1.16.9 on Hards!!! The only sure thing is that the Merc is not sandbagging, RP and Williams look promising.

Early days but I have a hunch that the "Pink Mercedes" can challenge for 4th place this year once again, precisely because it appears to be a Pink Mercedes - a sister of sorts to the W10!

I think Ferrari are going all in on 2021 and that this is basically a 2019B car. That's not based on today's pace, it's been my suspicion since the end of last year.

Could you tell us more about why you think so? It sounds very intriguing. Naturally, I can imagine why might choose to do that, but would like to hear more of your reasoning.

Quite the reliability from the teams today on day 1. I'm sure some teams will manage to break cars in due course.

Mercedes 1-2 with lots of laps as well. No surprise there. lol. Every team has done over 100 laps 8)

I am interested to see how far Max can go this year. RBRH should be more competitive this year. Midfield will also be very exciting. I hope AR does not fall behind. Second half of 2019 was pretty bad for them except for Brazil.

Great to see all the teams have a trouble free first day - hopefully that means there will be a lot more convergence this year and closer racing. Merc's upfront looks ominous tho - I think Max will mix it up - He has to - for the sake of entertainment!

There's been a fair few comments today comparing the Racing Point to last year's Mercedes and you can see that from the front on view below, they do look very similar.

Is there a possible sharing of information here, and if so is that allowed?

I'd imagine it's a somewhat similar deal to the TR/AT one with Red Bull, they buy the 'parts' from Mercedes. It makes complete sense really, this season is a development dead end with the regulations changing, the W10 would still probably do a job in midfield even totally unmodified this season and it allows RP to crack on with the 2021 car. I expect there will be a lot of grumbling early doors, especially if the RP is scoring big points, but I can't see them developing the car properly at all if its just the W10 with a pink paint job.

Watching some of the day's footage, it's going to be difficult to identify some drivers from the head-on shots during race weekends. I thought their numbers were supposed to be clear for viewers on TV?

The Alfas, AlphaTauris and Red Bulls I can't see their numbers at all...

Well of course it isn't a pink W10 and there shouldn't be any complaints. It is indeed probable they buy listed parts, but aero and chassis are not listed, meaning they have to do that themselves.

So what you see is them having studied the outside of the W10 very well to take the same design direction. Logically that would to well with the listed parts they bought - given that it works for Mercedes as well.

But true performance doesn't just lie in the listed parts and trying to copy the aero. They have to get it right, and then they also have to get everything underneath the bodywork right as well. And you can't simply copy that...

Apparently it's being called the pink Mercedes given it's resemblance.

Both RBR and AT have it in front of the cockpit (horizontal section on top of the nose), see here for example: https://www.gptoday.net/en/photos/f/5e4 ... 818e7c.jpg

AR have it on the angled section of the nose: https://www.gptoday.net/en/photos/f/5e4 ... 81daa8.jpg
