Good news for Red Bull, good news for Honda. Is it a good move from Max? I have to say, I am surprised by the length of the deal.

Yes, similar to Leclerc's long deal, so that rules out Mercedes for Max then, if RB don't have a championship contender with the new regs he might struggle to get a WDC.

I'm very surprised at both of them committing so much of their futures to one team. We have now fully entered into an age of stability with drivers simply not moving around anymore.

I don't think the length of the deal is that relevant, actually. Considering Helmut Marko confirmed their was a performance-related exit clause in Max's last contract, I don't think it's a stretch to assume he'll have something in this new one. If Red Bull don't deliver with the new regulations then I'm sure he won't be locked in there until 2023.

This puts extra pressure on Mercedes to either keep Hamilton beyond 2020, or to find a world class replacement. That is of course if they have long term plans to remain a factory team.

Well the door is supposedly closed at Ferrari after Verstappen's cheat comment whilst with respect to Mercedes they repeatedly have shown no interest in going there whilst Hamilton is still around.

It's actually a good deal for F1 because it ensures that Honda stay on board.

Well I believe going into the new era of F1 post 2020 I believe it was suggested the teams would prefer stability in their driver line ups?

Yeah there are some question marks over Mercedes' long term plans and Hamilton would want certain assurances before re signing.

I don't think 2021 has anything to do with it. Drivers have been staying at teams longer and longer.

(BIB) Agreed, it’s a win win for both Redbull and Honda.

Those question marks over the future of the Brackley based team are another good reason for Max to extend his contract.

Things between Verstappen and Ferrari are currently a bit tense (history has shown that that isn't necessarily terminal though), so a move there is off the table for now at least. So staying with Red Bull was a no brainer.

With Max being locked into Red Bull for a few more years, Charles at Ferrari and I presume Mercedes will keep Lewis to at least 2021 and maybe 2/3 there is the chance that one of those 3 have made the right choice.

However I feel now that in all of this there is absolutely 0 chance Danny made the right call moving to Renault. He seems like the loser out of all of this. Unless of course Renault come good (which I think is unlikely but stranger things have happened)

I disagree with this actually. It means that for any team who can make a jump and join those top 3 (and they won't be out on their own forever) Dan is the best driver who may be signable. He won't have to compete with Leclerc or Verstappen.

I am not sure there is any realistic chance for another team to join the big three though, is there? I mean, ok, the new regs should level the playing field to start with, but the big three have the resources to pull a gap by the second year of the new regs, if not before that.

I don't know. The top teams are always reeled in or pulled back in the end though. We are already in an era of unprecedented stability and I've often lamented that. It won't last forever though. Don't forget the budget cap will at least somewhat limit the ability of the big teams to stretch their legs.

Are they though? We only had podiums outside the top 3 by accident and not by merit in 2019 (from memory). I am not so sure if they'll bounce back. I mean it will be welcome, just that I won't hold my breath!

Historically they always have been. I admit that historically they always have been by now so perhaps we are on new ground. Perhaps I'm just not emotionally ready to give up that hope!

The budget cap “should” slow down the development gap. Keeping the racing more competitive. Imo the big 3 will still be ahead of the competition but the margins should be better compared to the current formula.

At the moment I think he can hold his own against Leclerc, I do see Ricciardo as being frozen out somewhat from a seat that can almost guarantee him race wins, he maybe the best driver that is signable but that may still be a case for the best midfield seat available?

On top of that he is 30 so his time is going to start going against him soon enough

Don't see how this is beneficial in any way for max... To sign such a long contract

First of all I don't think that anyone can predict which teams will benefit most from the 2021 rules, secondly if he waits on Hamilton to decide upon his next contract which many believe will be with Mercedes then that limits Verstappen to only Red Bull so he has limited bargaining power, basically by signing early he has no doubt increased the value of his contract.

I'm pretty sure I read an article where Marko explicitly stated that there are no get-out clauses in the contract apart from that they have to provide a good engine (which they have).
