PF1 Forum teammate wars vote: Abu Dhabi

The penultimate PF1 TMW thread of the decade (as I'll post one more write-up confirming the results for the year). I might shed a tear... anyway, results from Brazil are:

Image

Mercedes
TMW race winner: Hamilton (93%)
Hamilton 15 - 5 Bottas
Hamilton 72% - 28% Bottas

An interesting one this as Lewis wins by a landslide despite picking up a penalty for punting Alex Albon out the way. There was obviously a fair amount of discussion that he'd only been put into that position because of a silly strategic call by his team, and that he'd outpaced Bottas to the point where Valtteri's engine expired. It seems that was enough to ensure he took a healthy TMW victory.

Ferrari
TMW race winner: Leclerc (68%)
Vettel 11 - 9 Leclerc
Vettel 47% - 53% Leclerc

Another somewhat controversial and certainly not straightforward vote. Leclerc started out of position and had to work his way through the field, doing so well and eventually ending up on literally the same piece of track as Vettel. The resulting contact saw both drivers retire with the brunt of the blame going in Seb's direction, allowing Charles to further reduce the overall score to 11-9 and increase his percentage advantage to what is almost an unassailable lead.

Red Bull
TMW race winner: Verstappen (93%)
Verstappen 4 - 4 Albon
Verstappen 49% - 51% Albon

A starring weekend for Max sees him earn a comfortable TMW victory against the unfortunate Alex Albon. It leaves the pair neck-and-neck heading into the final TMW vote of the season.

Renault
TMW race winner: Ricciardo (82%)
Ricciardo 16 - 4 Hulkenberg
Ricciardo 63% - 37% Hulkenberg

Make that eight TMW wins in succession for Daniel Ricciardo, who has taken complete control of the Renault TMW battle. Esteban Ocon is certainly going to have to hit the ground running in 2020 now that Ricciardo has got his feet under the table.

Haas
TMW race winner: Grosjean (64%)
Magnussen 14 - 5 Grosjean
Magnussen 63% - 37% Grosjean

An all-too-rare TMW win for Romain Grosjean - his first since a narrow victory in the Germany poll - at least gives him the opportunity to end 2019 on a high by potentially stringing together successive TMW wins for the first time all season. It doesn't change the fact that Kevin Magnussen has comfortably vanquished the Frenchman in both elements of the TMW score.

McLaren
TMW race winner: Sainz (96%)
Sainz 13 - 7 Norris
Sainz 55% - 45% Norris

Even if Carlos Sainz hadn't ended up on the podium, it's difficult to imagine this TMW vote would've been anything but heavily in his favour, and that is exactly what happened. In truth, Lando Norris receiving a single vote was probably a little cruel, such was the magnitude of Sainz's first podium in F1. Either way, it means what was once a relatively close run thing has now swung heavily in Sainz's favour as the Spaniard claims his fourth TMW win in five, and seventh in ten races.

Racing Point
TMW race winner: Perez (86%)
Perez 17 - 3 Stroll
Perez 70% - 30% Stroll

While the opportunity to end 2019 with the most TMW wins of any driver has, courtesy of other results, faded, it is nonetheless another thoroughly decent season for Sergio Perez. Seven points finishes eight races has been reflected by a run of nine consecutive TMW victories, something that has rocketed the Racing Point score from 8-3 all the way up to what it is today.

Alfa Romeo
TMW race winner: Raikkonen (100%)
Raikkonen 17 - 3 Giovinazzi
Raikkonen 84% - 16% Giovinazzi

Another 100% for Kimi Raikkonen means Antonio Giovinazzi now joins Pierre Gasly on a total of eight 0-vote TMW results. It elevates Kimi's percentage for the year to 84% and means there is still the slim chance that he could end up surpassing George Russell in that sense.

Toro Rosso
TMW race winner: Gasly (100%)
Gasly 5 - 3 Kvyat
Gasly 59% - 41% Kvyat

Another result that wasn't hard to predict was Pierre Gasly destroying Daniil Kvyat and taking 100% of the vote. It was a podium that not only reignited Gasly's F1 career but also sealed victory in the second Toro Rosso TMW vote for 2019.

Williams
TMW race winner: Russell (94%)
Russell 18 - 2 Kubica
Russell 86% - 14% Kubica

George Russell's dominance continues at Williams and, with the confirmation that Nicolas Latifi will be his teammate in 2020, it is entirely possible that we'll spend 2020 wondering if he'll be able to surpass what he did in 2019.

TMW winners so far:

Max Verstappen over Pierre Gasly (12-0, 97%)
Daniil Kvyat over Alex Albon (6-6, 57%)
Kimi Raikkonen over Antonio Giovinazzi
George Russell over Robert Kubica
Lewis Hamilton over Valtteri Bottas
Sergio Perez over Lance Stroll
Daniel Ricciardo over Nico Hulkenberg
Kevin Magnussen over Romain Grosjean
Carlos Sainz over Lando Norris
Sebastian Vettel over Charles Leclerc
Pierre Gasly over Daniil Kvyat

Pretty straightforward this time:

Hamilton over Bottas -- Looked a little shaky in practice, but once the engines were turned up and it was for real he demonstrated why he's the champion and Bottas isn't.
Leclerc over Vettel -- Ferrari cockups made qualifying a little unclear, but it's safe to say Leclerc was quicker by at least some margin this weekend.
Verstappen over Albon -- It didn't look like they were even driving the same car this time. Shades of Pierre Gasly for Alex.
Norris over Sainz -- The smooth operator may have secured his 6th place in the WDC, but he did it with a pretty lackluster drive on the whole.
Ricciardo over Hulkenberg -- It was close between the Renault teammates, but I'm giving it to Danny Ric.
Gasly over Kvyat -- I realize you can make a case for what Kvyat actually achieved versus what Gasly could have achieved, but I hold him blameless in the Racing Point pileup.
Perez over Stroll -- Great drive by Checo, and he managed not to ram a Toro Rosso into his teammate.
Raikkonen over Giovinazzi -- The Alfa didn't look very good, but Kimi was once again comfortably ahead on race day.
Magnussen over Grosjean -- Grosjean wants to put this car behind him, and so do we all. Another race to anonymity for the Haas boys.
Russell over Kubica -- George Russell: exists. Teammate war won.

Think I agree with all that apart from maybe Gasly vs Kvyat as Kvyat did a pretty decent job, I might abstain on that overall.

I think you're being a little harsh on Sainz but I do agree that Norris won that battle.

I am starting to wonder if most other drivers will struggle against Verstappen as badly as Gasly did. I think Verstappen just had a bit of a dip when Albon first came but since then, he has been way better.

If you look at the results from this race. Many are saying Hamilton was simply outstanding. I think I agree. Although he had no challengers, the fact he still got fastest lap was still really good. But what is interesting is that Bottas finished 44 seconds behind him. That may not sound like i am meaning anything at the moment. But think about Albon. He finished over 50 seconds behind Verstappen. And Verstappen wasn't noted for having a particularly good drive plus he had an issue.

So Bottas was closer to an outstanding hamilton despite starting at the back, with no safety car and having no DRS for almost all of his overtakes and yet he was closer to hamilton than albon was to Verstappen - who had problems with his car.

Just how bad is Albon? I know it is his rookie season, but when Verstappen is on form, I'm not convinced he's much better than Gasly was at this team really. But it could just be that Red Bull is awful for any driver other than verstappen.

Albon is currently in the bottom half of drivers. Possibly even in the bottom third. He has done a hell of a lot better than Gasly though. At least he's been able to beat the midfield and not get lapped.

Infact, Checo was ahead of them. Gasly locked his brakes & Stroll touched Gasly which in turn made Gasly's car turn into Checo's car & break his wing. Thank God, Checo didn't suffer a puncture as he had a class race that day.
