Has Sebastian Vettel taken his last victory?

Gentleman, a short look back to the past.

On the 12th of May, 2013, Fernando Alonso claimed an impressive home victory at the fifth round of the championship in Spain. It was his second victory of the young season, and he was coming fresh off a season in which he took the championship to the wire. No one would have imagined that he had just taken what would be the final victory of his F1 career. Despite racing for five more whole seasons in F1, he would never again stand atop the rostrum.

Five years later - 26 August 2018, to be precise - Sebastian Vettel eased his way to victory in Belgium. It had been a much-needed victory to get his title campaign back on track; after a costly mistake two rounds ago in Germany and a weather-affected result in Hungary, he had conceded the points lead to Lewis Hamilton. A dominant win around Spa surely proved that Sebastian had more to say on the matter.

And yet, over a year later, that still stands as his final victory. Ferrari have won three times since then, but all of those victories went to Vettel's teammates. After a narrow victory in Monza, many believe the Scuderia has won their final race of the 2019 season, and Sebastian's future looks as uncertain as it has at any point in his star-studded career. An uncompetitive car, a teammate who has demonstrated the ability and the will to take what opportunities at victory might arise...

A year ago, it might have been inconceivable that Vettel had taken his final victory in F1. Now, I think one has to consider it as a very real possibility.

If Vettel is in a Ferrari until the end of 2020 then its more likely than not he'll win at least one more race.

I mean, Leclerc isn't going to win all the Ferrari races from now until the end of 2020 is he?

More to the point how many races are Ferrari going to win from now until the end of 2020? Then what proportion of those will Vettel beat Lclerc?

He could do. Vettel won all the Ferrari races 2015 - 2017. Alonso won all the Ferrari races 2010 - 2013.

No one expected Kimi to win another race after 2013. Yet it happened. As long as Vettel is in a top car, he will be able to do it, he didn't forget how to drive suddenly

I really don't think that's true!

I wonder if he will - the team has now transitioned to LeClerk as number 1 - so unless he goes gangbusters on a race- think he willl not - and I almost expect him to retire at end of year

No way. Vettel will win more races in the future, and chances are he could very well win some this season.

If he decides to walk away at the end of this year then yes that is a possibility. If he continues throughout next year I think the odds are for him winning some races. I would not be surprised if he still gets a victory this year maybe 2.

He will win again, for sure. He's not slow, just highly error-prone. One race where Ferrari can win, and he doesn't make an error, he can win. So yeah, he will, maybe not this year since not many Ferrari tracks left.

He will win again in the same way that Bottas will win again, only if his number 1 slips up!

What if Ferrari don't win any more races from now until the end of 2020? That's the sort of scenario that can lead to Vettel having recorded his last win. A Ferrari winning races in a given year is not a guarantee.

The whole point of the thread is that it seems almost inconceivable, and yet it would have been absurd in mid-2014 to suggest that Alonso would never win another Grand Prix. I'm not saying I think Seb won't, I'm saying I think it's a real possibility. He doesn't have all the time in the world, and if Ferrari ceases to challenge for wins it's not clear to me where else he can go right now.

Vettel will win the next race, Singapore GP. You can never write him off, he is going through a bad phase right now and will bounce back strong.

I don't think we've seen Vettel's last win. I would not be at all surprised if his career win total from here on out amounts to less than the fingers on one hand.

In each of 2017 & 2018 Vettel racked up five wins. With more than half the season gone, Seb has zero wins this year. I really think that Seb will only sneak through for the opportunistic victory when luck favors him. He won't find his "Mojo" for any real length of time.

"Has Sebastian taken his last victory"? a euphemism for Will Sebastian Vettel lose every race he enters until he retires?

I suppose the answer is wild horses can not stay the beast within Sebastian for long, a euphemism for no.

You can't compare Vettel to either Massa or Raikkonen.. Both of them were beaten soundly by Alonso and Vettel in qualifying and race.. Where else Vettel/Leclerc have their momentum swinging from one driver to another on seperate weekend.. But yes as someone mentioned above, Vettel is an error-prone guy, at least as of late.. And I can't deny that Leclerc is in the upward trajectory but Vettel isn't that far behind.. So yeah it's not like Vettel is driving a car a'la Mclaren 2015-2018 to completely write him off..

Prediction: Seb has won his last race with Ferrari, but hasn't won his last race in F1.

I doubt it. If Ferrari build a higher downforce car next year I can only see Vettel getting faster.

Since the Canadian GP, Vettel's heart hasn't been in it. He said himself (in Canada) that the officials take the racing out of the sport. And whether he's right or wrong, it's now about his attitude and mental focus that will determine if/when he wins his next race.

Having a Ferrari that can challenge Mercedes on race pace would also help. But we have now passed the two races where Ferrari was likely to excel, and the rest of the season does not look good for Ferrari in general.
