FIA statement on the Formula 2 crash at Spa:

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) regrets to advise that a serious incident involving cars number 12, 19 and 20 occurred at 17:07 on 31/08/19 as a part of the FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race at Spa-Francorchamps, round 17 of the season.

The scene was immediately attended by emergency and medical crews, and all drivers were taken to the medical centre.

As a result of the incident, the FIA regrets to inform that the driver of car number 19, Antoine Hubert (FRA), succumbed to his injuries, and passed away at 18:35.

Damn... that's horrendous news.

Shocking to see a young life taken away so suddenly.

Some car crashed into him. That was likely the fatal blow.

I'm numb. I was certain this guy was heading all the way to F1. What a dark day for the sport

Anthoine Hubert RIP

It just had the feeling of something far worse than just any 'big crash'. Tragically that proved to be the case. Single seater racing at those speeds will never be totally safe, but I hope that this will be learned from and that improvements can be made.

Just horrifying, and based on the footage just so freak and brutal. Glad the other driver involved is stable and he will get the support that will probably be needed in the aftermath, my thoughts are with all concerned.

Terrible news. Especially sad for French fans who have now lost 2 drivers of such great potential in only a few years. RIP Anthoine.

I know he had a victory in Monaco and in France. Very sad day. Anticipation of the F1 race is now in a somber mode. One has to ask himself, would a sand trap/any trap save his life, and it probably would, because the car would not bounce back to the racetrack (actually the asphalt was not a part of the racetrack but was used in high speed), to be hit by another driver. It's easy to be smart after things happen, but still.

Really shocking. I didn't watch the race live, and now I certainly won't watch a recording. Really casts a shadow over the whole weekend.

It really sounds like just a regrettable racing incident gone horribly wrong, but that doesn't do anything to take away from the sadness.

I was half watching the race while working and just stopped when I saw the accident. It was horrendous seeing the impact and you could instantly tell it was bad. I hoped all involved were ok but as soon as they cancelled the race within 10 minutes of the red flag it was obviously bad news however I didn't expect the news to be this bad. Hes was becoming a star of F2 and a potential future F1 star. I hope never to see another incident like it, yes motorsport is dangerous but this shows why we should never become complacent with driver safety.

Agreed. This thread is about Hubert - deservedly so - but Correa is going to have a hard time. Aside from his serious injuries, I can't even imagine what it would be like to know you killed someone you knew quite well even if it wasn't your fault.

I go back to drag racing in the 1950’s and I’ve seen a lot of bad crashes. That was a bad crash. RIP young man.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure there did used to be gravel traps at this section of the track?

If my memory is right, I wonder why they removed them

We've still not really had any news on Correa other than that he is in a stable condition in hospital. Fingers crossed that his injuries are not too serious.

The other driver involved who must surely be having a hard time mentally is Alesi whose spin triggered the whole series of events but who thankfully escaped without injury. Not that I'd assign him any blame at all, while the F1 cars seem to sail through Eau Rouge effortlessly the F2 cars have much less downforce and it's not difficult to lose control, particularly at the start of the race with a heavy car and cold tyres.

Has anyone heard any confirmed news on how Correa is doing?

I read on a Motorsport feed, that he has leg fractures and minor spinal injury. Nothing more than that. I believe this was a quote from the team.

You are right, when Zanardi had his crash, the sand traps were still in place. The idea behind replacing them with asphalt is to give the driver the chance to apply the brakes and reduce the impact when they hit the tyre walls.
One problem associated with asphalt run-offs is that the car has first to come down again, after flying over the kerbs before they can brake. So that meant in general lowering the kerbs themselves, which resulted in drivers using the run-offs for racing. Which is why I'm opposed to letting drivers mock the track edges in the spirit of letting them race. And although last year it was a bit better, plenty of F1 drivers cut the corner atop the Raidillon to the extent of being completely off-track. All because of lowered kerb stones.

I haven't seen any good footage of the accident yet, but I got the impression from what was available, that Hubert's car hit the tyre barriers much further down the run-off than the Renault F1 crash there two or three years ago.

Last year, I took a look at what was on my F1 ticket, and it didn't mention that motor sport can be dangerous, despite what commentators usually tell us.

I was at Luton airport about to take off on holiday. Flight got delayed so we taxi’d and sat by the runway. Thought I’d check Twitter with what little internet connection I had there, just see how the F2 race had begun. I knew it had literally just begun, and pretty much as I checked it, the crash happened. The response on twitter suggested it was bad, and having seen a photo of the aftermath and what was left of a car, I was braced for the worst. Took off not knowing the outcome and spent much of the flight hoping for the best.

So it was horrible to land and see that it had indeed killed Hubert. I don’t know if it makes it worse that it was a driver who, over the past 18 months, had really started to look like he could have an F1 drive in his future, but your heart breaks for all his friends, family, and the wider motorsport community. I’ve got even more respect for the F1 and F3 drivers who went out and raced not 24 hours later, particularly those who were close to him. Can’t imagine how hard that must be.

I’m also relieved to see that Correa’s injuries don’t appear to be either life or career threatening, and I hope he gets all the support he needs during what must be a horrific time for him as well.

RIP Hubert - It's incredibly sad to lose anyone at such a young age. I guess we are very lucky that, thanks to improvements in safety, such incidents are much rarer these days. I really rated Hubert and have enjoyed watching his overtakes and racing through the field this year. Can't imagine how Gasly & all of those so close to him managed to race the next day. Wishing all the best to those affected by this.

And, a bit off topic, but regarding the above comment about what's printed on the back of the ticket... I think all of ours have mentioned it being dangerous. I know the ones we had from Spa in 2013 did, as did ones for later years in Hungary and this is what the back of our ticket said for Australia last year:

Tragic. I don’t watch F2 and knew nothing about it until the Channel 4 qualifying show, but I did see some footage online later. Looking at the Chain Bear video, it is much clearer than any footage there is and the articles I’ve read, so I would recommend the Chain Bear version to anyone who may be wanting to know more but hesitating on actual footage.
