Renault already off to a bad start, this was posted on Reddit on the motorway to Budapest - maybe Hulkenberg offered to drive the truck there to make up for his mistake in the race:

The driver is ok, Renault have tweeted about it:

I hope I'm wrong, but I fear that without rain, this race is going to bring us back down to earth with a bump!

With the current Formula the Hungaroring has produced as many good races as anywhere.

The heat should not bother anyone with highs all three days below 80°F or 26°C.

I read somewhere that Merc think they didn't get the most out of their upgrade package last weekend so that could be something to watch this weekend.

It does have a corner where forcing another driver off the track has potential. Don't say 'Suck my balls' to the driver afterward though.

Racing Point this race will upgrade their front end with new nose, new wing & upgraded suspension. Here's a pic of the upgraded POU suspension similar to Mercedes. It should give a boost to RP cars in the low speed corners which they've been lacking.

I don't know much about engineering or tensile strength etc, but that new suspension looks like it'll come apart from the little wheel bang or hard hit curb!

Haas better not copy it then.

In lieu of creating a new thread or being able to use the German GP on where much of the discussion took place*

It's seems sense (ymmv) has won out regarding giving out only fines for unsafe releases during the race:
*Why lock the race thread so soon when it is quite possible there are still things to discuss about it that make perfect seen to be in that thread?

Experience tells us otherwise. The vast majority of race threads end up in an endless circle.

Don't normally discuss this sort of thing in-thread, so if you'd like to discuss this further, please take it to the feedback thread.

In other words, the FIA has agreed to enforce a rule that already existed but that last week they suddenly forgot about.

Anyway at least common sense has prevailed, and thankfully nothing ever came of last week's failure to impose a penalty as Leclerc crashed out anyway.

I see Mercedes back on top. Ferrari should pip Red Bull too here. RBR is not good in slow corners where Merc shines and sort of also Ferrari.

I thought slow corners were Ferraris biggest problem area, while they were a bit better in higher speed corners. I remember them losing half a second in S3 at Barcelona for example.

They were faster than both the Merc and RB through the slow corners in Germany with their latest upgrades. But the Mercs were trialing their upgrades as well, so that muddied the waters a bit.

Really? According to the graphics posted on page 2 of the Germany practice thread Merc were 0.34s faster than Ferrari in the slow corners. That's only in practice of course.

The Banana kerb will probably be less of a problem than the witches hats and the disruption to allow them to be replaced by track officials.

Sounds like Crofty's got his gag of the weekend sorted with Ferrari's "Boomerang wing".

"What, the one they threw away and it keeps on coming back?"

Already pulled that trigger twice.

I'm not laughing at his jokes. I would tell him that but he would almost certainly reply "Hi 'not laughing at his jokes', I'm Crofty"

On a separate note, issues for a few of drivers so far, Max keeps spinning, Lewis had something with his brakes, Leclerc says the car is not great, Bottas has a nightmare morning. Great session so far!!!!

Bad news for Ferrari if Leclerc is struggling with the car as he has their new updates and was 0.8s slower than Vettel!

Edit: there may be some confusion about who had the Ferrari upgrades. Autosport's live text said Leclerc but BBC report says Vettel.

The driver is totally, 100% in the hands of the pit crew & it is the pit crew who has the obligation to release the car in a safe manner.

I'm against someone receiving a penalty, in racing or any other area of life, for an incident that was unavoidable on their behalf and the cause of actions by an external force. This is one example of that

It is the team that should be penalized, not the driver.
The driver is part of the team though, and therefore isn't it right that the driver should suffer for a pit crew mistake. Just as the pit crew have to suffer when a driver puts it in the wall.
Plus I don't see people complaining when a driver loses points due to car failure, when how is that any different? It's still the team's fault and not the driver's, just like the unsafe release is the team's fault.

There should be no splitting of penalties, the driver and team are one combined entry that wins and loses together.
