F1 new owners are dumb.

There are plenty of terrible tracks they could get rid off starting off with Abu Dhabi, Spain, Baku, Russia, and Mexico.

I always liked the old Rio track last used in '89 I think. I think all that remains of it now is an oval, but it would be nice if the new track harked back to the fast corners and straights of the old one..

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I'm just as happy with F1 leaving Interlagos. The circuit has some great history, but the safety of the surrounding area is hard to justify when there are so many other choices out there.

I'm with you there Tim. I preferred Jacarepagua over Interlagos. I didn't mind Interlagos, just like Jacarepagua better.

It was actually demolished to use for facilities for 2016 Olympics

Yeah that's been an issue for a while there now. Didn't a couple of Williams mechanics get robbed at gun point there a few years ago?

Then there was Bernie's mother-in-Law getting kidnapped close to the circuit in 2016.

I think someone gets robbed at gunpoint every year, tbh. It's a big problem that frequently got overlooked due to the history and beloved status of the track.

Hopefully, Sao Paulo thieves didn't rob enough money to buy a car and go to Rio for the week-end...

Ha ! Cars have just been robbed yesterday in Sao Paulo !

It is indeed. What should be a local police issue has ended up forcing F1 out of Interlagos because of the criminals around it. Security is not the FIA's main job, but I agree it needs to be addressed, and better late than never. I'm just sceptical if this is the right way or not to address this issue, F1 has toured in many places with a reputation for crime and I do not remember them abandoning the races for that reason. South Africa has higher crime rates than Brazil, while Mexico is not far behind either. But I'm probably out of my depth so I'll stop here!

Sad really. I have no idea if things will be any better in Rio but hard to see why F1 should keep going back to Interlagos.

Mexico is a good track even with the parabolica gone & Baku is currently running at 50% on the excitement meter.

Abu Dhai is ok I guess. Spain & Russia can leave tomorrow.

The tracks that produce the most boring races IMO opinion are Sochi, Abu Dhabi and Catalunya.

Isn't there a website that as averaged out fan ratings for grand prix's hell at tracks over the last decade or so?

That's probably a good a way of distinguishing the tracks that produce the more exciting races as any.

I'm surprised Mexico is so low but not surprised with Singapore's rating. I'm not a fan of that track.

Also surprised Melbourne is #10 going off the general feel for the track on this forum

I think recent races at Melbourne haven't really done it justice. Up until 2014 races were generally good.

They're going to build an entire F1 track in less than 18 months? Or are they redeveloping the old Rio circuit? Or is it another street circuit?

Its a shame for Interlargos, its a great track.

I have a couple of associates from Brazil and they are adamant that there is nothing to worry about. They say it's just politics and populist speeches/talking points. They don't think there's any way that this circuit will be built and they firmly believe that any F1 race in Brazil will remain at Interlagos. Not sure if anyone in here from Brazil would like to chime in but I have heard this from two Brazilian people who I know personally.

I now hear this year could be the last for Barcelona, and maybe Hockenheim, as Vietnam and Zandvoort are pencilled in for 2021. Personally I think the redesigned Zandvoort is great, and Vietnam must be better than Barcelona, which not only has no passing, but has had its fast-corner section 3 emasculated now. I predict another procession tomorrow. So roll on 2021!

Welcome to F1 ;)

It would actually be reasonable to give Rio another year to prepare anyway. I think what Wurz is saying in your link is basically that Rio aren't likely to be ready for next season, despite the theoreticcal possibility. Conveniently, there's a track with a contract for the intervening year.

How about simply build a carbon copy of the track somewhere with better security, and add a randomly activated sprinkler system to simulate the unique weather conditions.

True, but with an artifical system one could program it to have the same statistical properties as the original :smug:

I don't know about emasculated, but obviously it's easier than it once was due to removing the immediate gravel on the exterior of the corner. I was more upset about the fast section before the final turn being chopped into the horrible chicane. That part was awesome, I loved it in the V-10 era.

Ultimately, as awesome as Barcelona is as a destination, this track is total crap for F1 cars in its current iteration. They should keep it for MotoGP, which always has good racing there.

One could also slip a few $100 bills under the table to the guy running the sprinklers to pull off a Singapore 2008-like strategy...

I am from Rio de Janeiro and I tell that your associates are absolutely correct. The F1 race will remain at Interlagos. No one around here really believes that a new track will be built that makes possible the move from Interlagos to Rio. Not in 2020, not in a near future.

Rio's track is Bahrain's twin brother. Just compare the layout after the first 5 corners to Bahrain.

Right. You have to think that ‘ole Herman presses “mix” on the corner selection in his software, Adds in the stands here and there, and viola!! You have a new circuit. This track engineering thing is good work, if you can get it.🤣

Looks like a MotoGP track more than anything else. It might be good for F1 once/if they reduce downforce levels by 70%. Are there any elevation changes? Topographic gradients?

The beauty of Interlagos, apart from it's flowing nature and technical cambers, is that it's built on a natural amphitheatre. The ticket holders in the stands can observe large parts of the track other than the main straight. It's unique. This new design isn't. We've seen these corners before at Bahrain, Sepang, Istanbul Park etc.. It appears to me that Tilke has a set of a dozen or so corners that he just inserts into any new track he designs. He's run out of ideas..

It's not actually much like Bahrain. From the looks of it, Bahrain is vastly superior. Bahrain is actually pretty amazing from the front straight through turn 4. Some great fighting goes on there.

Bahrain is a good track in a bad country. But this track is only really like it in the first and third sectors - the presumptive second sector is quite different.

Really? Because I think every single year someone associated with the Grand Prix is robbed at gunpoint. Do you think that happens at other tracks on the calendar?
