Favorite Young Driver in F1

Forget about Hamilton and Vettel for a moment and let's talk about the next generation. Who is your favorite F1 driver under the age of 25? Who do you see yourself rooting for during this next era and why?

For me, I have to admit that I'm more of a Leclerc guy than a Verstappen guy. In terms of talent; Max is second to none but I'm not a big fan of the attitude.

I've also taken a liking to Leclerc, he's shown bundles of talent but maintains a humble, down-to-earth attitude. Or he's had very good PR training.

Verstappen on the other hand is as unlikeable as he is talented.

As for the others... well I'd say I'm relatively indifferent. Interested to see how Russell gets on though given how impressive he was in F2.

Yeah I'm excited about both young rookies this year. Russell was very impressive indeed in F2. Norris was a bit underwhelming last year and I would have liked to see him do another year in F2 but I do believe he has raw talent.

For me, Max and Charles are both pretty racey and fun to watch but Max's mentality needs work. He's very disrespectful of other drivers and has a poor attitude.

It's Leclerc for me right now, but as a Macca loyalist I expect it will be Norris by the end of next year. I truly believe that Leclerc is the next big thing, however, and I think when all is said and done nobody will put Verstappen on a level above him.

For now looking at talent and empathy I go for Leclerc, Verstappen has the talent but I can't say I like him that much.

Couldn't agree more!

I just hope that Leclerc can cut it in a big team, Max is already winning races, a WDC will be a matter of time, if nothing drastic happens.

I will be very disappointed in Charles if he's not up to the task. I expect him to be quick and competitive from the moment the lights go out in Australia. I'm genuinely excited about the matchup between Charles and Sebastian. Probably the most exciting matchup between a veteran driver and a rookie since Alonso/Hamilton in 2007.

I agree though. Max has already proven himself as fully capable of competing for championships. He's got the speed and he's got the raw talent. It's just a matter of getting the car to compete for wins for a full season rather than just a handful of races.

Yeah, fully agree. The most exciting match-up of that kind for a good while. It will make or break Sebastian, that's for sure.

I'm sure I can't be the only one that thinks this about Max Verstappen.......

I totally agree with anyone who says he has completely the wrong attitude, but isn't that part of what makes it fun to watch him?

It's a bit like the person everyone loves to hate on a reality show because they cause problems and arguments, you dislike them but the show would be boring without them.

I remember feeling very similar about Senna at certain points through the 80s too.

Verstappen and his "it wasn't me" attitude, does not do him good.
Leclerc - I have not warmed up to this guy, I think he is massively overrated, and with a few costly mistakes in qualy and awful capabilities to race in the rain, I expect that the hype will be partly gone, for a year or two.
Gasly - even more overrated with one 4th place in Bahrain. His awful attitude in Brazilian GP made me ice cold to him.
Ocon looked like a fine guy before he put Max out of the victory in Brazil. i think I have seen enough of him.
Russei, Norris, Albon, know not much about them.
Sainz, not sure what to make of him.
Stroll was booed and has withstand that period standing on his feet, I really have high hopes for him this season. I like that he is polite and humble, unlike many other drivers these days.

You know what? I agree. The poll is for favourite driver, not best.

I'm kinda stuck between Stroll just for the amount of crap, a lot of it I genuinely feel is underserved, he's copped off people & the humility he's shown in the face of it, & Leclerc again because of his general attitude plus also he seems to be the closest one to being able to sit Verstappen, his old man, Marko & the RB organisation on their self entitled, arrogant ar$es.

Verstappen - talented but my GOD he's arrogant. Such an unlikeable character. Even a young Schumi didn't have such a large chip on his shoulder
Leclerc - I have high hopes for this season, especially against Vettel. I'll probably be more intrigued in this battle than the actual WDC
Gasly - I hope he can ruffle MV's feathers early doors, although he's most likely already been told by Marko that he's a No. 2
Ocon - Never really warmed to the guy. Got tangled up too many times with Perez and always seemed to have a smirk on his face
Russell - A good team to make your F1 debut with. No pressure, an experienced team mate (although he should easily beat Kubica) and doesn't really matter if you're on the back row. Just here to learn
Norris - Can't really rate. Will wait until the first few races
Sainz - Underachieved in my opinion. Doesn't look like a good career move by replacing Alonso at McLaren
Albon - Same as Norris
Stroll - A likeable guy but can't shake off 'daddy's money' tag. Hope he does well with RP so some of the negativity can go

I voted Charles, but there's a lot to be said for Lance! The Lt said it well. (I don't share his take on Ocon at Brazil, but that incident was, in my view, misread by the stewards.)
Somebody wrote about Ocon having a smirk on his face. We only have the face we were given, and I think perhaps Perez bore some of the responsibility for their comings together earlier. (And now I can't get Kimi's radio call about Perez out of my head...

I must admit to being baffled by what I'm reading in here about Stroll. First his daddy bought him an F3 team and paid to essentially have Lance in F3.5 while his competition was stuck in F3. So after that farce of a "championship", he then has daddy pay his way onto the grid. After 1.5 years of being nowhere, daddy then decides to just buy him an F1 team and in the process take a seat from a driver who actually has been pretty impressive in F1.

Okay, he's not an arrogant prick. I suppose that, in this twisted world of ours, that counts for something. Bottom line though is that he is the most egregious example of a pay driver on the grid right now and he has pushed someone out who should be there on merit.

For me it's between Leclerc and Russell. Right now Leclerc is ahead and has had more time to show what he's made of but I'm a big fan of Russell's general attitude and personality from the admittedly little I'm able to see from a distance.

I think that's exactly the point, even in the face of all that he remains quite grounded and humble; when he arrived in F1 with that background I was expecting him to carry a sense of entitlement the likes of which we have never seen. You can't hold it against him just because he comes from a wealthy background and his father has bought his way in, that's hardly his fault.

No, it isn't, hence why I personally don't. Just trying to explain why others might.

Maybe his public persona is all a result of intense PR training and none of us can know for sure without knowing him personally, but with even the most bland of PR robots we do see the mask slip every so often. I haven't seen that with Lance.

Really??

You think it's a twisted world where not being an arrogant prick actually means something?

You don't think Stroll deserves a place on the grid even though he finished just 3 pts behind his vastly more experienced team mate in his rookie season, including a podium in Baku & a front row start in Monza, despite having 1 more retirement?

You might say the podium & the front row start was due to a lot of luck, but, above others, it was him who was good enough on those days to get himself in the position to take advantage of the others misfortunes and it's not like he's had the greatest of cars at his disposal since he's started.

He's kept out of trouble on the track. He's good in the wet & off the line.

It's funny. Stroll comes from a family of vast wealth and resources and comes across as a well grounded & humble kid who seems to be aware of his place on the grid, while we have another young driver, who's last name & not inconsiderable family wealth I'd imagine probably assisted him, along with his undoubted skill, to some degree, thinking he deserves everything he demands and if he doesn't get it the toys come out of the pram and it's someone else's fault.

I think Strolls done enough for people to cut him some slack. He's now got a decent car & a quality team mate. This will be his test. If he fails it, I've no doubt his old man will tell him his time in F1 is up and will probably by him a company to go play with.

Because so many people love the next big thing, which many believe Max to be. There's no other sport I can think of where some Stroll equivalent would garner more favouritism than the leading light of the same generation, like comparing Rublev to Zverev or even Tsitsipas in tennis or someone possibly not top 5 of their generation or so at QB over Patrick Mahomes. I'm not complaining mind, it's merely an interesting observation.

That said, this poll is a very small sample and if it was opened up to a much bigger audience I'd expect to see that result reversed, but then again, if we ban the Dutch from voting, one wonders. It might say a lot about Max Verstappen and him being unusually unlikeable.

I meant that it's twisted that being an arrogant prick is essentially the baseline and that NOT being one is something worthy of praise. By the way, for all we know, he could be a far more arrogant prick than Max. Maybe he's just really fake on camera. My problem with Max has a lot more to do with what he does on the track than what he says in interviews. I'm not naive enough to think that you can actually know these guys just by watching the occasional interview.

Lance's driving hasn't been terrible for the most part but he has lacked consistency and has been out-qualified by first Massa and then Sirotkin. Anyone else having the first two years that he's had would have probably washed out of F1 but his father's money has essentially generated a promotion rather than a sacking as his outcome. Overall I think he's been Vandoorne-like in the races. Hasn't done anything particularly special IMO. He has shown a bit of pace in qualifying on a couple of occasions. I think his performance at Monza in the wet on Saturday during his rookie year was the most impressive he's looked in F1. That's just one performance though and most of his career has been forgettable. There isn't much personality to his driving (or his interviews for that matter). I guess I just struggle to see what would attract any fans to his side.

It may also indicate that Max's shine has begun to wear off, considering that this poll is being dominated by the guy who is currently viewed as the next big thing (Leclerc). I think Max is viewed as the big thing we already have - people are used to him, and so he's not being judged based on being exciting anymore.

Why is Kvyat not on this list? He's under 25 and he is racing this year. And as said, it isn't about the skills, it is about who you like. He should be on here. Not that i would vote for him but not sure why he's been left out.

Hope he does well with RP so some of the negativity can go
But who's your favourite?
Leclerc - a likeable guy who's going up against a 4xWDC in a car expected to fight for the title, so I'll be glued from FP1 in Melbourne.

It may also indicate that Max's shine has begun to wear off, considering that this poll is being dominated by the guy who is currently viewed as the next big thing (Leclerc). I think Max is viewed as the big thing we already have - people are used to him, and so he's not being judged based on being exciting anymore.
That's not true at all if anything Verstappen's driving is getting better, this is merely about personalities, Verstappen is not likeable whilst Leclerc is very likeable.

Fair enough, I expect Vettel to come out on top because I see chinks in Leclerc but it will be interesting to see just how quick Leclerc is.

What do you consider as is chinks? I think his wet weather racing really. What else would you consider as a chink?

Well struggling to drive in the wet is a significant weakness, isn't it? I wonder how much of that is really his driving though. I seem to rememeber him delivering some impressive wet weather performances in GP3. Time will tell but he certainly doesn't look like a rain man in F1 so far.
