Ferrari look like they will be the team to beat. Their car looks like a real pleasure to drive. Very planted, very smooth. The Merc, by comparison, looks a bit of a handful. Mercedes are running heavier without question and it's far too early to feel 100% confident in any conclusion but Ferrari just look like they have it this year.

Red Bull are the darkhorse for the titles though. The engine reliability is VERY impressive from Honda so far and the car looks twitchy and responsive as always. Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if Mercedes are third best to start the year.

I think you're reading far too much into what we have seen so far. The first test is all about data collecting. Does the aero performance correlate to the wind tunnel and CFD? How balanced is the car? How does it respond to setup changes? How does it work the tyres? These are all questions that need answering before seeing how fast it goes over a single lap. To say that Ferrari are out in front based on the first two days of testing feels very premature.

Of course it is pre-mature, very much so. Not a surprise though.
;)

I'm not going by the times. I'm going by how the car looks as it goes through the corners, what the drivers have to say about it, which teams get the most mileage, how do they look on long runs, etc. And of course it's too soon to know for sure (I said as much in my own post) but you can have an idea of who sits where based on testing.

Williams finally brought their car to Barcelona. But it is expected no ruining until afternoon session.

@SkyF1
Quote:
Williams car arrives in Barcelona
After the team sat out the opening two days of testing, which equates to a quarter of all the available on-track time before the season start, the 2019 Williams car finally arrived at the circuit this morning at around 4am.

Since then, the team have been working flat-out to get the car ready for action.

'There is still a lot of work to do as expected so unlikely to run before lunch,' report the team. 'But everyone is doing as much as they can'.

Fingers crossed.

Just watching Mark Priestley's review of testing & he's saying that news from the paddock suggest Honda are still suffering from the vibration issues with their PU that was reported a month or so ago & that's stopping RB & TR from throttling it up.

For some reason I couldn't do the You Tube link thing but here's the URL.

Also interesting news just after it.

Looks like standardised gearboxes in 2021

ANd goes even faster, still on C2 tires

@Autosport Vettel gets Ferrari back into its customary 1m18s and instantly backs off, with a 1m18.614s to his name. Another morning, another set of quick laps from Ferrari.

Let's just hope there won't be any ruining afternoon either!

yes I'm really surprised about the standardized gearboxes. I Thought that was a red line for Ferrari and that they wouldn't tolerate external parts on their car

Ferrari (and McLaren) have brought wheels similar to the Mercedes ones from last year.

Correction from @Autosport

Quote:
A key correction from this morning: Raikkonen set his fastest time on the softest C5 tyres, not the C4s, which are also red.
Funnily enough, once the tyre is turning it's pretty hard to tell the difference between ones that have red writing and red lines on them, and the ones that just have red writing on them.

Tyre type C4, C5 etc along with the colours are an absolute joke! Impossible to follow.

I thought this set up was only for launch and a better system was going to be implemented. :x

Its an absolute embarrassment.
How can they get this so wrong constantly?

C1? Red (c2) Yellow

WHAT the heck??

3 compounds - Hard, Medium, Soft
Thats it. I dont care how hard how soft or how medium
The end.

It is pretty ridiculous, and now we don’t even have colors to distinguish them. I am in the minority but I was fine with last years model. They have managed to make it even more complicated after all the complaints. Unreal.

RBR has not done many laps today. STR has done 100 instead. Looks like RBR will have slow start again to the season

This is just for testing.

In the races it will just be hard, medium soft (white, yellow, red) but because the teams have access to all tyres for the test they can't use just 3 names.

Arguably they should have used supersoft/superhard and different colours but that would cause a different type of confusion since the 'supersoft' of the test would become the 'soft' in Melbourne.

The test will be a little confusing but tbf I don't really see what else they could have done, other than make the C4/C5 and C1/C2 easier to differentiate from trackside.

Roughly translated, CH says the Honda PU is a rocket, accelarates better than last year's and Max can clearly feel the extra power. He thinks they are ahead of Mercedes...

Johnny Herbert just said that he spoke to someone from Red Bull but wouldn't name them. Apparently the belief at Red Bull is that the order is:

1. Ferrari
2. Red Bull
3. Mercedes

Mercedes are going to have their hands full trying to win the titles this year. That much is clear. Ferrari are clearly strong and Red Bull are maybe the most scary team out there with the unknown of the Honda PU. It seems that there are some teething issues with the Honda unit after all and they have not been able to turn it all the way up but this year we might see Honda shock some people IMO.

Mercedes are either being very coy or they are genuinely in trouble. Either one is as likely as the other.

I don't quite understand why Horner or unnamed RB that Johnny Herbert has spoken to would come out and say that. They probably know stuff that we don't but seems a bit premature to me.

Counter point: he may very well be right.

Toto reckons the Ferrari is half a second quicker than Merc and Red Bull and they are debating whether to switch to Ferrari's front wing concept. That is similar to what Fransz Tost of Red Bull said, although they see more potential in their own front wing philosophy.

But Helmut Marko thinks Red Bull are only slightly begind Ferrari.
