I didn't see the need to create another new thread about Billy Monger so I will just add my comment onto here. He's currently racing in F3 where the cars currently don't have a Halo, I wonder if he would be able to manage to get in and out of a car that has it fitted. If not then I think that's a bit unfair if he has to stop racing single seaters due to not being able to get in and out the car.

I'm not sure it would be a big problem TBH, initial egress is all about the arms, he would have prosthetic legs presumably. From the above video I'm not sure that getting out of the car would stop him driving in F1 he is a pretty determined young man.

I know Zanardi isn't looked at like a top racer by the F1 crowds, but I am in the USA and he was absolutely my favorite CART/Indycar driver and one of my favorite all time drivers. I am still bummed that he never seemed to have a good car in F1 as I would have loved to see him compete at his best, but F1 has never been about fairness and plenty of good drivers never got to show their true talents.

Billy only went and put his car on pole on his first return to Donington since the crash there that resulted in his legs being amputated, this kid is special in my opinion.

I don't want to sound pessimistic, but isn't there an extraction test in F1 that drivers have to pass? How would this work with Billy Monger? Would they make an exception or modify the car somehow?

Makes sense really. I looked it up, article 13.1.4, it is 7 seconds to get out of the car and also to have replaced the steering wheel back within 12 or so, not sure what the requirements are for F3 currently

I hadn't spotted that it's on iPlayer before it's even been broadcast, don't see the point of that so I'll wait and watch it this evening.

The BBC do a few long reads on various events/people. They've done one on Billy Monger.

Just watched the documentary. What an inspiration Billy is, to remain as positive as he has despite what he has been through is incredible. Definitely worth a watch on iplayer for those of you in the UK.

Billy was in the Mercedes pit in Abu Dhabi during qualifying and David Croft said that Billy will be having an extraction test of a GP3 car this week.

I was mightily impressed by the video discussed above and the inspirational approach to life Alex Zanardi displayed and shared with Billy Monger. I was much saddened to hear that Alex Zanardi had had a crash on his handbike in a relay race in Italy and is in a critical condition having suffered a head injury.

Just hopes he gets better!

Yes, If anyone deserves good fortune right now it's Alex Zanardi. I listened to his episode of beyond the grid yesterday. The story of how he ended up stuck between Bennetton and Jordan is fascinating.

I’ll have to listen to that. I was just reading tonight how Ian Phillips described Zanardi as the fastest driver to ever drive a Jordan, and how they wanted to sign him for 1992 but couldn’t afford him.

Could you imagine what could have been if they did? Or what wouldn’t have been?

Alex Zanardi has needed a second operation following his accident. His condition seems quite precarious, sedated, intubated with a confidential prognosis, whatever that means?
