Top 10 Rated Drivers

How do people rate the current F1 drivers, for me:-

1. Lewis Hamilton - As far as I'm concerned the fastest driver in F1, however some may say not the most complete?

2. Fernando Alonso - He himself says he may not be the fastest, he may not be the best in the wet, but he does everything well and is the most complete driver.

3. Max Verstappen - The upcoming heir to F1, hasn't done enough yet to warrant the number 1 spot though, he has no apparent weaknesses apart from over aggression.

4. Sebastian Vettel - I see many similarities with Alonso, no real weaknesses but is he the fastest or the best in the wet? Questions were asked in 2014 and then this year with mistakes being made under pressure.

5. Daniel Ricciardo - I think beaten quite comprehensively by Verstappen this year which puts him at the bottom of the top 5, were was his trademark qualifying?

6. Valtteri Bottas - This is were I had been placed last year and I don't see any reason to change my opinion, one step behind a tier 1 driver but basically as least as good as anyone else.

7. Sergio Perez - He continues to position himself at the top of the pile of drivers without a top drive without ever really convincing me that he could beat a tier 1 driver.

8. Nico Hulkenburg - He's looked strong this season and dealt with Sainz quite well though Sainz will no doubt be better next year, he did get edged out when teammates with Perez.

9. Esteban Ocon - Very good debut year in which he wasn't that far behind Perez.

10. Carlos Sainz - A driver with potential but hard just to know how good he is away from STR, scored enough points to finish 9th in the WDC but wasn't able to put the manners on the Hulk.

I can see this thread as being utterly predictable. I'll pass.

I think the same 10 but a different order -

1. Fernando Alonso
- And for me nobody else is that close. He can just do things others can't. Absolute points machine. Getting the Mclaren in the top 10 in qualifying is a minor miracle. It just shouldn't be there. He is getting to the age of usual decline though so could perhaps soon be on the way down.

2. Lewis Hamilton - Another top 10 of all time material driver. Nobody comes close in the wet and the best i've ever seen him in the second half of the season. Completely different driver now to the one that burst on the scene in 07. A lot more cagey. Perhaps even a bit to circumspect these days to really make incredible things happen.

3. Max Verstappen - Great in the wet, huge pace and will still improve. He's cut out a lot of the dirty tricks this year as well and one of the few drivers on the grid who really tries to make opportunities for himself.

4. Daniel Ricciardo - Like Alonso, another points machine. Consistent, best overtaker in F1. Possibly doesn't have the ultimate pace of those above and not particularly good in the wet.

5. Sebastian Vettel - Nobody better at converting an opportunity to win. Pace to live with anyone and good in the wet. Question marks over his temperament and hazard awareness.

Personally I think 3-5 are very close and could be put in any order.

Gap

6. Sergio Perez - Another great season. Consistent point scorer and knows how to pull off a big result. Weakness is ultimate speed.

7. Nico Hulkenberg - Has had a really strong season. Almost single handily scoring his teams points. Better in qualifying than in races.

8. Valteri Bottas - Took his wins well. Consistent and perfectly able. Looked a bit exposed at time and has a bizarre inability to string a full race together without a bad stint.

9. Esteban Ocon - Very strong rookie season. Very close to a very good team mate. Will improve.

10. Carlos Sainz - Lots of speed. Scored a bucket full of points and I was very impressed with how close he ran Hulk when joining mid season. Gets involved in to many incidents.

1) Hamilton
Alonso has been out the picture too long for me to consider him number 1. Hamilton has proven to be the fastest driver in F1 in recent seasons, he has the ability to pull something out the bag more than anyone.

2) Alonso
Probably the most complete, but... does he still have it? He has been driving the wheels off of that McLaren and very little to show for it. He looked the class of the field on his Indy debut, which I think takes something quite special to do in the modern age.

3) Verstappen
The kid is special. Once he gets over the exuberance of youth and starts to mature - his potential really is quite something.

4) Vettel
Still blisteringly fast over a lap, and still the master of leading from the front of a race.

5) Ricciardo
Feel sort of bad putting Ricciardo at number 5, as he seems better than that. Late overtaking master and world champion if he gets the car.

The top 5 are all of similar level, and perfectly capable of beating each other if circumstances suit. There is a marked gap between them and the next 5.
--- Gap ---

6) Ocon
The guy has the talent to join the top tier

7) Perez
Really not a huge amount between him and Ocon this season, however I do feel Perez has reached his plateau

8 ) Sainz
Needs to be less wreckless, but has the talent to join tier 1.

9) Hulkenberg
Understated, but quietly been going about his business. Interested to see what he can do if Renault get a capable car put on the track.

10) Bottas
Consistent, but doing nothing particularly special. A solid #2 driver for a top team, will score steady points and the odd win with Mercedes.

Everyone has chosen the same 10 drivers thus far.

True, with different order, but there's no one else that really deserves to be in this list, is there?

The top three in the original post are by far the best drivers (fastest, complete, raw) on the grid . Hamilton, Alonso, and Verstapen are quite rare talents and I find it difficult to seperate them out.

Vettel and Riciardo follow on behind, with the remaining 15 drivers all interchangable - possibly Hulk and Carlos stand out a little, ohh and the only exception being Stroll (he has no place on the grid).

Personally I still think Kimi would give anyone between pos. 6-10 a run for their money.

Maybe but would he beat them?

We could say that Massa gave Bottas a run for his money even though he lost every season.

Wow, I didn't even register that Kimi isn't in the list. I agree with you, Kimi is not the Kimi of old, but he would be within the 10 best there.

I kinda agree with you. I think he's been shown up by Alonso and then Vettel, but tbh I think anyone in the 6-10 list would have been, too. I don't think it's a dead cert either way in the way that, say, the top 5 most certainly are

Who knows? It's a matter of personal opinion of course but I'd probably try and fit him in there, just not sure on whose expense.

I was pretty impressed by the lists so far, all excluding Kimi. I agree with that completely.
