Sounds a bit gimmicky to me but if it helps bring in more fans then I guess it's a good thing.

it is only for this race. I dont know what the new timings are for the pre race procedure. but it's very usa and Indy 500 but it gives formula 1 an identity again.

an idea we could think of. what gimmicks as you call it. but in essence. pre race formalities could we introduce to formula 1 at each race. it will give each race a identity.
the USA race would be the grand driver introductions. what about other races.

I'mm all for shaking things up so the Fans wo pay the money to go to the race get an even better experience however, I don't think this will work, it's not a Boxing Match and I think Liberty will quickly drop it.

How about going cown the BTCC route where the drivers are available for autographs/publicity mid meeting?

Stick another hour between FP1 and 2, it will give the Teams more of a chance to repair cars which have been damaged in FP1 and get the drivers out throwing signed items to the crowd around the curcuit and do the same for FP3 and qualy.

I know we need to keep the drivers safe from the spectators but, have them all out there throwing stuff (not all on the same wagon, split them on 4/5), maybe speaking to fans (put PA systems on wagons), answering questions which have come in via social media, I don't know.

All I know is, the Fans at curcuits love to engage with the drivers, they have paid their money, they should get a better show and more access.

There is also something else Liberty needs to think about, is it right races which draw easily 100,000+ spectators easily (the like os Silvestone/Monza et al), be regarded as second place to those who only have accomadation for 70,000 spectators, just because some Countries can get Government backing.

Bernie didn't care as long as the moneyy ended up in his Families elongated, TAX Free Bank Account. However Liberty Have a status/reputaion to keep, I wounder if this will change their longer term plans?

I am all for the driver announcement. As a boxing fan I have grown up listening to Michael Buffer for decades. I personally find the drivers parade so massively boring it is a good excuse to leave the grandstands. Why not announce the driver's names like that? Would allow the fans a chance to really show their support together for their favourite driver's. Would be fun to hear the size of each roar for each driver as well.

'Meet the drivers' would be good. A period where fans can know exactly where drivers can be found to sign or be in pics is a good thing. I hope it happens.

Yeah they could employ the Charlo twins to coach them.

I think it works in the USA because that's their thing and it was near the end of the season which helped to build the title battle, but for every race please no.

If this the future of F1 with American owners, I'm glad its going behind a paywall in 2019 in the UK.

I know we had a thread about the news this was happening, so mods feel free to delete this if inappropriate, but I thought it might be useful to have a thread reflecting on the spectacle now that it's over, and how it fits in with some of the other changes I assume we're all seeing in Formula 1.

I will say firstly that when the pre-race show began on Sunday it sent the chat room I was in into hysterics. The boxing style announcing, the drivers on the roof and running to take their place against epic music with fireworks shooting into the sky.

I'm an Australian and making fun of Americans for their gaudy displays of over the top patriotism or celebration is something which is built into our cultural collective. HOWEVER, I have to say I kind of loved it.

Was it goofy? Yep. Would it work anywhere outside of the US? Hell no, but I will say it got me out of my usual routine of spending the drivers parade in the kitchen preparing a drink and some snacks.

I suppose it could be thought of like the Olympic opening ceremony where it's an over-the-top display which highlights the hosting countries individual culture and quirks. In that sense it's something which I think would be a great addition to every weekend.

My gut tells me that the overwhelming consensus will be that the users of this forum hated it, but thought I'd bring it up.

Personally, as another Aussie, I thought the pre race US announcement thing was cringeworthy. Absolutely embarrassing. I was expecting the announcer to say "Let's get ready to ru-m-m-mble!!!" Ugh. It took what seemed like ages for all the drivers to be named, god forbid F1 gains any new teams, they'd have to start announcing an hour before the race.

I'm not a huge fan of Brundle's grid walk either, but it's a lot better than the Austin carrying on.

America can be so cheesy. I guess though, if it's a one-off for the US GP, it may be OK, but not every race.

I kind of liked it. Also concidering it's the USA, so you'd expect it.
If the Russians would pull this out of their hats, that would've been a surprise .

I don't think each country needs 'their own culture' forced upon the sport, but I do like the entertainment and somewhat 'over-the-top' stuff.

That phrase is a Michael Buffer trademark and everyone knew that it would be used as soon as it became known that he was the announcer.

Hardly a surprise.

I think it works in America and only America, also it helped being near the end of the season so they could build the drama of the title battle.

Who was surprised?

I do prefer this to national anthems though. There's nothing I hate more in any sport than national anthems. Unfortunately this race gave us both.

I think we should abandon all structure, and let either the countries decide on what type of parade it will be or let me decide based on my casually-racist beliefs of what each country stands for.

In Russia everyone has to take a shot of vodka on the way to their car.
In the UK nobody ever gets to their car, as the drivers all just stand around holding doors for one another and urging the other one to go first.
Mexico we can have tequila and cocaine...
In Brazil the cars must all line up with larger than normal rear ends..
In Abu Dhabi we can set foreign slaves on fire with petrol..
