Give them all the same cars

Post by cmax »

This was one of the hottest qualis I have seen for a long time.
It is just amazing scrap when cars are performing around the same level.
What do you think guys?

No that's the beauty of the sport, the development and the car building. Right now I'm very pleased to see Redbull further down the order and Mercedes and Mclaren a bit higher up the field. Sometimes a team can build a great car and then they can be very happy at their results, like now Mclaren should be, and sometimes they fail like Ferrari. And that's what F1 is all about, winners and losers.

exactly.

Brawn said exactly what makes this sport F1 (had massive things like technical, drivers, teams, engineers).

All the drivers (most) have done the "Same Car" thing, Lewis showed he can beat Vettel, Resta showed that he can beat them both. So does that mean Resta is a far better driver??

Sorry NO. F1 as it is and always will be even crazy Bernie wouldnt come up with this idea.

'Give them all the same cars' - wouldn't that just make it GP2?

If we gave them all the same cars, it would ruin the fun and the beauty.

Not neccesarily. What we witnessed this morning were drivers who were considered to be not front runners
showing that given the right car, can compete with the best and give us an exciting quali. It will also remove imo the predictable quali we got used to for the last couple of years.

I feel the opposite, take away some of the restrictions which make the cars so similiar as it is and let some of the smaller teams come up with ideas which can bring them to the front without having to spend millions on making their front wing 0.1% more efficient and gain practically no time.

 Exactly. Plus, this is a team sport.

The thing is, you give everyone the same car and its going to suit one person's style over another.

I'm hoping that as F1 grows stronger again (certainly the teams' finances seem to be improving) we can get back to a formula thats more open to in-season testing.

That way the drivers will get the opportunity to develop the car that suits them to as high a level as possible, which would give us the ultimate 'fair' competition, especially if it was all done within some level of financial restriction as well.

The upside is that we would never have to go through 'vettel new ayrton', or 'hamilton new schumi', only to find them qualifying 6th the following year.

The downside, as someone already mentioned-at the end of the day there is no car that would suit everyone equally.

As stated very well by Anothony Davidson during one of the practise sessons when he was being gauded into making a call on who would be best in a single car, it would depend on the car. Put them all in a Macca and Lewis or Button would end up best, put them in an RB and it would be Vettel. They get used to a car style and know how to maximise it. Stick them in a HRT and someone like Grosjean who doesnt know what a winning F1 car is would maybe be best overall as he would know how to extract the maximum from it.
