Seriously Mr Martin Brundle??

This Hungarian GP brought forth the worst of Mr Bundle. One of the better commentators we have at present Brundle made needless and unsavoury comments about Alonso having a bit of staged fun moment wishing people good summer holidays. Seriously Mr Brundle..did you have something not nice before that tweet? Or you were unhappy that Lewis rightly gave back the position while Ferrari which has always looked after its own interest no matter how selfish it may look on the outside. Maybe it reminded you that this Ferrari can become like the team which looked after MS's interests. Just what the hell was it before you wrote that. Lost lot of respect for this guy.

Also pondering about stupid stats like "no driver who has won the Hungarian GP has won that year's world championship since xyz year".... I mean come on..Seriously Mr Brundle. You have had much better days. Yesterday was certainly not.

All he said was it reminds the big teams why they don't want him. He also said Alonso was a better driver than any on the podium. Hardly nasty comments.

Not sure what he meant by 'reminds the big team bosses why they don't want him'. I didn't see the harm to his team of him sitting in the deck chair having a bit of fun. He'd just finished 6th and set the fastest lap in a Mclaren Honda. The first bit of good publicity they'd had for a long, long time. But it was true that it is a pity to see him sitting in the deck chair rather than standing on the podium.

Not nasty but a pretty stupid last comment about it reminding big teams why they don't want him. Unless having a sense of humour is something team bosses frown on it made little sense.

If Alonso had come up with it himself then maybe you could try to frame it as another dig at Honda if you really wanted to but it was a Liberty Media stunt because it was the holiday break, hence deckchair, hence famous driver did something with deckchair, hence lets ask him.

Alonso was happy to parody himself so it's a strange time to stick the boot in.

I don't think Brundle was trying to criticise Alonso. More airing his frustration that the best driver in the sport can't compete at the front. or that's the way I saw it anyway.

Could well be just poorly written, he did try to explain after that tweet but it didn't seem to add up much to be honest. I felt he was basically saying bosses can do without the sideshow or circus Alonso brings or that it's those "all about Alonso" type of things that bosses don't like and this stunt would remind them but who knows.

He's not well, he's on holiday himself, at home watching the race so I doubt he was putting much thought in it. Hopefully beer involved as well. :D

If that isn't nasty what is? It is 100% unnecessary, unwarranted and unprovoked. Big teams don't want him?? Am not sure what he means by that. So now Mclaren is not a big team?? Had the Honda Mclaren partnership been a success it would have suddenly been a big team to Brundle?

I was just simply appalled. Not expected it from him.

Big teams don't want him and I have been saying for years now with people telling me how he is the best and will drive for Mercedes next year etc etc.. Not going to happen.
He thinks he is bigger than F1 and has made his bed with his latest Indy experience and theatrical radio outbursts..

Just check every year "silly season" or "where will Alonso be in 20.." threads.

Personally, on the NBC Sports coverage the guys went bananas and had a hearty chuckle as did I when Alonso sat on the deck chair right over the mural OF HIM ON THE LAWN CHAIR A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO!

It was (as my brothers across the pond like to say) Bloody brilliant and hysterical!
I've not seen the Sky coverage but if someone has a link to it, it would be nice to see & hear it for myself.
Sounds like maybe some took it out of context or Brundle is simply to used to the robotic and boring nature of the former regime he grew up with.

For me it was an OBVIOUS sign that the tightwads that ran F1 up until this year are no longer dulling the spectacle down. Rather they recognize what the fans like, want, and enjoy and are doing their best to give it to us. Alonso merely added an improvised moment that made an already hilarious joke even funnier!

I say… Bravo ole chap!

There was alot of wishful thinking during silly season (as there always is). Up to you if you want to take those kinds of claims so seriously.

Not sure where you are going with your last line. Why do you think he think he is bigger than F1?

I doubt the radio outbursts have too much to do with it (all the top drivers have these kind of outbursts when things aren't going their way). Merc and Ferrari already have established 1st drivers, with the 2nd drivers performing solid jobs. They don't want to upset the apple cart.

To be honest what frustrates me much more about Brundle at the moment is his constant defending of Jolyon Palmer's below-par performances. It seems there's always an excuse handy.

"Made his bed with his latest Indy experience"???? His "theatrical radio outbursts" are going to keep him our of a "big team"?

Your post comes across as quite bitter. He may not get a ride with a "big team", but i would guess it would be more a case of his age and salary, lack of available seats, and post-Ferrari comments burning a bridge than his "latest" Indy exoerience.

BTW, if the was the LATEST Indy experience... what were the previous ones?

Horner was not impressed.
Toto was not amused.
Same for Lauda.

He went a bit too far(with his comments on Indy) but many will fail to see it.

I also don't remember VET/HAM calling their engineers stupid/smart(in a sarcastic way) or making fun of their engine/car manufacturer.

In all honesty Alonso is yesterdays man in F1, Mclaren and his fans can keep hoping and people can in their own opinion claim he is the best, but it will remain what it is.

Sporting heroes are remembered by reality and not perception.

Opinions can differ, but not the record books.

How do you demean F1 simple find Martin Brundle, when a 4x , 1x WDC and a future WDC stand on the podium but no that does not matter Alonso is better than them, but funny thing is every team he goes to one way or the other faces a downward trend, whereas the guys they claim he is better than when they arrive at a team, the team faces an upward trend.

As you lay your bed so shall you lie in it, he has made his bed and F1 needs to move on from the side show he has become now.

Neither VET nor HAM have ever been in a car with the PU problems Alonso has while in his second McLaren tenure. How do you know either wouldn't get frustrated eventually?

Renault (1st stint) and Mclaren (2nd stint) went on an upward trend since Alonso joined them. But please remember that Alonso is not a designer, so not sure why you looking at this correlation in the first place. :)

Of course it was his decision to leave Ferrari and it turned out to be the wrong one. If you think F1 needs to move on from him and that he is yesterday's man, then perhaps you don't need to post about him anymore?

And F1 is about alot more than just the record books. Do you honestly think the number of WDCs defines how great a driver is?

I say it again.. HAM has never insulted his team unlike ALO(not only McLaren/Honda if you are curious about it).
HAM is really a big inoffensive baby.. he can complain all he want about vibrations and all weird stuff but he is soft at heart(ask Paddy Lowe) and he is a guy you can control. Remember what Dr. Zetsche had to say about him (whenever he received a called from Toto). He is like a teenager.

I am very confused by your level of outrage. It's not so much making a mountain out of a molehill, it's making a molehill and then making a mountain out of it.

The deck chair moment was very funny to us all, and Alonso then joining his mural with a deck chair is funny to us all.

However, what Brundle is pointing out is that the original deck chair moment was Alonso publicly expressing his discontent with his machinery. He was deliberately drawing attention to the situation as a form of protest.
Whether or not he intended it to become as viral as it did our not is irrelevant - it got attention - and, fairly or unfairly, many have the opinion of Alonso that he will stir things up, rock the boat, when he's not happy.

Now, I stress, I'm not saying that is a fair assessment of his actions or intentions, but it is how he is perceived.

And what Brundle was pointing out, is that Alonso is a better driver than any of the three drivers on the podium (which includes Sebastian Vettel) yet the leading teams are reluctant to make space for him, because he is perceived as a troublemaker when things aren't going to plan. Again, I stress the word "perceived" in that sentence.

All three drivers on the podium do not yet have contracts signed for 2018, all three seats are faster than Alonso's current seat. Given Alonso is better than all three, you'd think the maths would be simple, but it isn't - and the deck chair incident is a metaphor for why they are not jumping to sign him.

What's your anti-Indy thing all about? The Indy 500 is a gigantic event and Alonso's participation was huge for both series

I was just simply appalled. Not expected it from him.

He was deliberately starting attention to the situation as a form of protest.

And what Brundle was pointing out, is that Alonso is a better driver than any of the four drivers on the podium (which includes Sebastian Vettel) yet the leading teams are reluctant to make space for him, because he is perceived as a troublemaker when things aren't going to plan.

Yeah I think you have nailed it with that post.

The not going to plan thing would be finding himself getting beat by either Vettel or Hamilton then you risk Alonso destabalising the team.
He was getting beat in 2012. Was he destabilising the team then?
By Massa methinks you miss the point?

Are we not talking about Alonso driving at Mercedes or Ferrari for next year?
What evidence do we have that a) he would be beaten by either HAM or VET, or b) that he would destabilise the team? There appears to be a lot of assumptions going on here

Or him winning and the other one destabilising the team of course.
Or them both being quite equal and both taking that badly and destabilising the team
Or just by being brought in by them in the first place which goes down like a lead balloon with the other one and that destabilises the team.

Lots of things can happen which is probably why it's wiser to remain as is when things are going well.

Get a grip people.............Alonso sat in a flippin deck chair and it was funny, all this crap about appealing to fans and Alonso has a bit of fun with the fans and they loved it. Po-faced F1 as usual. Maybe you prefer your F1 to the dumb it's a knockout dopey bike races to try add fun. Tip.....watch F2 it's close racing, overtaking and has noise! just hope they don't slap a halo on the things.

(edited phone typos)
Well I maybe over reacting. but seriously it was highly unnecessary for Brundle to say it. Stir things up? Which of the current top 3 drivers have not done things to stir up things in their team.

Anyways Alonso having a light hearted moment... Brundle had to say this. I just wondered if Hamilton would have done it, would Brundle have praised him and just in the last sentence say something negative....answer is pretty obvious..NOPE.

You know am just ranting as I hold Brundle in high regard. This was uncharacteristic of him. Hence am making mountain of a molehill. By the way, someone said Brundle sides with Jolyon a bit too much.. Well for a non Brit like me watching...it is pretty obvious that he does that. He was defending Di Resta too!! :)

I find the defense of Palmer a bit much but I get it, he's pals with his Dad. Nothing wrong with defending PdR though, he should still be in the grid imo and did well last weekend.

He was decent. I don't know if he'd make my ideal 20 driver grid but I thought it was absolutely ridiculous that he was forced out of F1 while Sutil stayed after being so comprehensively beaten by him.

Yeah thinking about it there are some juniors I'd want in before him like Leclerc but I think he might just sneak in my 20.

Ham
Bot
Vet
Rai

Ric
Ver
Alo
Van

Hulk
Gro
Kvy
Sai

Weh
Pdr
Per
Ocon

Gio
Lec
K-Mag
Gasly

Something like that anyway but not necessarily at the teams it looks like I've put them. Unless I've forgotten about another young 'un I think I'm down to Massa or Gasly/Gio/Paul.
