Yesterday MotoGP rider Nicky Hayden was riding with a group of 14 friends in italy when he was struck by a car head on.
From what I read last night, the impact sent him flying onto the hood and windshield of the car and it was immediately evident he was in serious trouble.
He suffered fractures to his femur and pelvis as well but the most critical injury was that to his head/brain.

As of yesterday he was placed in a medically induced coma to try and limit the damage to his brain, but it seems to be conformed he's suffered brain damage to some degree.
Hoping he can pull through and get back to living a normal and fruitful life at least, even if we never get to see him ride again.

First Abe, the Michael, now Nicky! These guys all did highly dangerous things for a living and odd occurrences in the real world end up costing them their lives.
It just doesn't make sense.

You can see images of the car here: http://www.motofire.com/2017/05/news/la ... car-video/

Such a brilliant rider and a genuinely nice guy. Was always super cool and funny whenever we'd see him at races. I'll be wishing good things for him, hoping Good Ole #69 pulls through.

OMG - very sad news, best wishes and prayers for Nicky to recover completely.

. Devastated for the Kentucky Kid. I sincerely hope he comes out of it in one piece but I’m afraid it sounds ominous.

Like Schuey, he goes years travelling at insane speeds on the race track only to fall foul of something innocuous.

Horribly sad news. I've had a few close shaves with groups of cyclists over the years. This is really sad.

Get well soon Nicky.

I remember when Mark Webber broke his leg on a cycle ride I thought 'how ironic that an F1 driver hurts himself more at slow speed than at 200mph' - since then we've had Schumi and his skiing accident, and now Nicky on his bicycle too.

Billy Monger was also placed in an artifical coma IIRC... He woke up fine.

Of course in this case if they're already saying it's very severe and he's endured brain damage, then that's terrible news obviously. Hope he recovers...

Wow, such a shame :(

Hopefully he can recover enough to lead a fulfilling life.

"The prognosis remains unknown."

Dayum, I want to post upgrades and info, but I hate the situation. Only tears and prayer are appropriate for this sad situation.

I am a huge fan of racing, bit this cruel side of the sport (and life) makes me sick to my stomach.

I want Nicky to heal and recover, I want to see his wonderful smile again.

Monger didn't have severe head trauma. He was put into an induced coma to reduce the risk of shock from the amputation surgery, where it was done to try to limit brain injury with Hayden and Schumi. That makes a lot of difference.

Hope he pulls through, not sounding good though for the foreseeable future if they say he may have suffered brain damage before he was pit in a coma.

It's accidents like this that always make me baffled by how little protection professional cyclists wear and that we haven't seen more life changing injuries in that sport.

When you consider all levels of cycling there are probably a lot of incidents like this but you don't hear about them if they're not top of the line riders.

Not wanting to derail this thread given its importance, but I work for a car insurance company in the bodily injury department. A vast majority of cyclist cases we receive are clearly the fault of the cyclist; however as they are classed as the 'vulnerable' road user then we always have to apportion a percentage of blame on the car driver, even though there may have been nothing they could have done to avoid the accident. The causative potency argument is such that I've had cyclists speeding through junctions or crossing from pavement to pavement with no regard for any oncoming cars and yet, in most cases, full blame is on the car. On paper you'd be mad to pin any blame on the car driver, but 9 times out of 10 they're deemed more liable than the cyclist.

The speed of some cyclists these days exceed that of some low-end scooters/motorcycles. And to wear just a foam helmet and lycra with no limb protection is just madness.

Again, not wanting to derail the thread as I do not know the details of Nicky's accident, but something needs to be done to protect cyclists on the roads.

Well, my apologies to try and bring some hope into this thread then. Good thing you ended that.

I served this guy a panini at Silverstone during the MotoGP back around 2012 I think. He was a really nice guy and seemed to be the only rider to smile and chat with the hospitality staff. Read the news a couple of days ago now but didn't realise it was this serious. I hope he pulls through ok.

Complete madness. Cars shouldn't be blamed just because the driver didn't get hurt.

On the other hand I've cycled in Italy; it's not for the faint hearted. There were some real kamikazi drivers there with no regards to cyclists. Without knowing how the incident happened of course it is difficult to appoint blame. And frankly, when a life is on line it doesn't matter who's fault it is right now; what matters is that Hayden gets through this.

But the amount of close shaves I had in Italy with cars and other cyclists was second to none.

My girlfriend cycles, so I have it drilled into me about how to be careful around cyclists - leaving space, overtaking safely, checking mirrors, etc. It's infuriating to know that no matter how good my driving conduct is around cyclists I can still get done for something outside of my control

Fortunately I don't see it much around where I live, but some cyclists ride as if the only rule is "don't hit me while I do whatever I want." That said most drivers are pretty unaware of other cars around them much less motorcycles and bikes.

I'm not a cyclist but will ride to work for cross training when the weather allows it and keep my head on a swivel the whole time. The road my office is on has 3 travel lanes, a right turn lane, and a bike lane in each direction but a lot of people will use the right turn lane as a travel lane squeezing anyone on a bike way more than is necessary.

I can remember Nicky in the late 90s as a 17-18 year old racing in the AMA Superbike series and finishing runner up in the series to the veteran Matt Mladin. He was a phenom and the last of the truly great American grand prix motorcycle racers IMO. His rise to MotoGP and unexpected championship in the premiere class was an amazing story and throughout his entire career I never heard anyone in the paddock say anything negative about him. I'm really hoping against hope that he comes out of this okay.

Dammit he's passed away. A terrible damn day. :( :(

He was the last of a long line of American MotoGP world champions. Such a popular guy in the paddock. He was just a kid from Kentucky living his dream of racing motorcycles, and he goes on to become a world champion. For it to end this way is just so cruel.

RIP, champ.

This is exactly what I was afraid of, and expecting. Terrible news. It just feels like such a cheat somehow when someone like this, or Michael, survives racing at the top of a dangerous sport only to be taken out in such a mundane way. :-((

I just saw the severity of the bike after the accident and the glass. This is terrible. Just this year, the MotoGP world lost Luis Salom. And now is Nicky. Our hearts go out to his brothers Roger Lee and Tommy.

There will be a KFC bucket waiting for you in the sky, CHAMP.
