Wish Alonso all the success.

BTW, full Orange indy car looks prettier than the McLaren.

I already said it in the other thread but seriously McLaren should just ditch the black from the F1 livery and run that!

Watching the stream. Mario Andretti says it's a lot easier to come from European style racing to an oval than the other way round.

No that many would argue otherwise but good to see an experienced driver of both confirm that so clearly.

Yup and he's still finding his footing. Testing different lines all over the track figuring out how to attack and where in order to remedy washout, over and under steering issues and next might begin to downshift going into 1 to squeeze those little bits of revs to gain even the slighted speed advantage it offers.
You can tell he's still got quite a bit more in the tank because coming out of corners he's still a couple of feet from the wall. When his speed increases close to the 230's he will begin to flirt with the wall and knowing him I expect he will "Wall of Champions" it consistently.

Fernando hit a respectable 222.548 fastest lap on his rookie run. I think you can still go back and watch some of the Rookie Test (lol) on a live stream.

They took the "sticker" tires off before he left the pit - testing the fuel saving modes etc....... Looks like he's off again for more testing after a few rain sprinkles.

He managed just shy of 220 mph there after the sprinkles. Looks like rain is back now he will probably be done for the day. Well done Alonso (bet he's wishing he could have that engine in Spain).

ps - in 20-30 minutes Alonso will talk to the media on the same YouTube feed.....

I'd love to know, honestly, how well he did given the circumstances? Of course we are going to hear that he did well, but I wonder how his lap times compared.

I think FA is one of the very best drivers, but these high speed ovals are a different beast where you can't over drive the car at all and there is a lot of other factors such as pitting, driving in lapped traffic, etc.... (IE-Alex Rossi probably isn't the best indycar driver even though he won it last year).

I do hope Fernando does well and it should bring back a sparkle for motor racing , I do believe he was bored and frustrated with Honda McLaren and F1 , particulary after the start of the new season with the new cars and their expectation , but then to find he had less power than last year and another dog , but I hope he doesn't get involved in any scrapes with the home crowd drivers

He hit every target in minimal time. The more knowledgeable IndyCar fans online have been impressed. They were saying that getting into 220mph+ would be a great day's work for someone who has never been in an oval before. He managed 222mph

By the end of the day he still looked pretty conservative to me - still keeping well away from the walls. He said the track was narrower than he expected and said it's hard to imagine they run 3-wide. Getting closer to that wall is how 3 cars will fit!

He's definitely got more pace in the bag

Adapting quickly to any 4 wheeled machine has always been one of Alonso's strenghts. He just has a natural instinct and inmense natural talent.
You guys remember in Silverstone 2011 when he drove the 1950's Ferrari and in the 2nd lap he was already oversteering/drifting it on corners?

He hit all of his targets. IMO he did what one of the best drivers in the world does, make it look easy.

The Indianapolis track and DW12 are a completely different beast than anything a road racer would every experience. In all racing cars, if you push it to 98% of it's potential it is one kind of car. Push it to 99% and it becomes a raging beast, and take it to 100% and it changes into a vengeful ex-spouse. It will bite your head off with the slightest error. In Formula One we see it in spins during practice when drivers are exploring the car and track limits.

But at Indy, because of the incredibly high speeds, changing weather conditions, a relatively narrow track and those hard walls, any error at the limit has dire consequences. So what the team is doing with Alonso is following a carefully scheduled plan to gradually bring his speeds up, to where he is fully prepared for dealing with this car in race trim and race conditions.

No matter your resume, all drivers must go through a rookie program instituted by the sanctioning body. And basically, that is what yesterday's test was all about. Rookie orientation practice involves 10 laps at 205-210mph, 15 laps at 210-215mph, and 15 laps over 215mph. Those were his targets, and he accomplished them with superb competence. If he fell short of those speeds, or went over them, then it would be considered a fail in this rookie test.

For this test the car was trimmed out to a (relatively) safe high downforce configuration. At the beginning of the test session the car was checked out with a few installation laps by another (but experienced in this nature of track) driver before Alonso was put into the cockpit. Then under the guidance of some incredibly competent and experienced people, Alonso was walked through the entire process, giving and receiving information all the time.

The car was in a safe and high downforce configuration. There is a lot of test and practice laps to be run, Alonso will be slowly brought up to speed as the car is trimmed to less downforce and higher speeds. Yesterday he was solo, but from now on he will share the track with other drivers, learning all about how the car interacts with the aero influence by other cars. Run solo and the car reacts predictably. Run it just 5 MPH faster and the car becomes a totally different beast and the demands on the driver ratchet up a quantum level.

So the speeds are not relevant at this time, no one has come close to attempting to get the car to it's full potential.

Yeah, I think the more interesting data fact from yesterday were his three consecutive laps just three thousandths of a second from each other and two consecutive ones in exactly the same time to less than a thousandth... It being a consistency test, that was mightily impressive.

Exactly. Of course it was a test of driver skill, but what they are looking for is consistency and discipline. He demonstrated all of those disciplines.

After the initial test day, Alonso will not be back on track at Indy until official Indy 500 practice begins on Monday May 15 - the day after he contests F1's Spanish Grand Prix with McLaren.

I don't know that anybody finds them beautiful, but they're strictly function over form.

The basic car grows on you but some of the crazy aero bits they put on for road/street circuits are f'ing ridiculous but I think those are going away next year.
