Driver of The Weekend 2017 - Russia
Cast your vote for the 2017 Russian Grand Prix!
Rules & Format
- Voting is based on driver performance (not who has the prettiest girlfriend/best haircut)
- Voting is based on performance of the whole race weekend, so qualifying counts towards your assessment.
- You only get one vote
- The poll will start on either on the day of the GP (or Monday if I am unable to for some reason)
- The poll will run until Friday so that it will always end before the next GP
- The top three voted for drivers will earn points towards a championship table as follows:
- 1st: 5 points
- 2nd: 3 points
- 3rd: 1 point
- Ties will be decided by finishing position

I can't see past Bottas. Beat his team mate by a good margin on Saturday, then was the class of the field on Sunday.

I guess I'll have to award point based on where drivers finished so Vettel would get 3 points and Kimi 1. Either that or just have no 2nd & 3rd place and just give 5 points to Bottas.
Or maybe I should give all 9 points on offer to Bottas for a clean sweep?

Bottas was the obvious standout to me, as apprently was the case for a lot of other people. Vettel's the only one I'm seeing as anywhere close this weekend.

Well he sort of messed up qualifying but he got the job done on Sunday with a truly great drive.

Bottas is surely the only possible candidate here. Let's see if he can build on this though, I think he really underperformed in the first three races and had to up his game.
Remember Frentzen winning the fourth race of 97? I hope this doesn't turn out to be a similar flash in the pan.

I too would say Bottas, BUT Hamilton's car was difficult to set up all weekend and they simply couldn't find the right balance. In the race Hamilton also had overheating issues to contend with from early on and did an amazing job to manage everything and bring it home in 4th.
Honorable mention for Felipe baby. Drove a beautiful race and looked to have 6th place secured until he suffered a slow puncture.

An important part of driver's job over the weekend is to work with their engineers to find the right set up. They can't expect to hop straight into a perfectly balanced car that the engineers have set up for them. If Hamilton was having balance issues then I don't think he can be absolved of blame given that Bottas demonstrated that it wasn't an inherent Mercedes issue. The overheating issue was beyond his control but the damage was done on Saturday. If he'd qualified even 3rd it may well have been him stood on the top step of the podium; both Mercs made excellent starts but Hamilton got boxed in behind the Ferraris and had to lift off.

So the way it stands, a man who was outqualified by a second on Saturday and crashed on lap one (after crashing in qualifying through his own fault) will earn the third spot for this weekend.
We desperately need a few people to not vote for Bottas and prop up some legitimate third-place contenders!

So close in qualy and nailed it in the race. Bottas was nothing short of spectacular this weekend

Well, I'm not sure. See, in the end I also voted for him, but more on the back of him winning his first race and significantly outperforming his (albeit struggling) 3x WDC teammate.
But Vettel would be a worthy candidate too, and probably even performed better if you look at it all. My considerations:
- Vettel got very close to maximizing his best qualifying time, allowing him to take pole. Bottas was actually faster, but couldn't hook his final lap up as well and took third on the grid when he should probably have taken pole.
- At the race start, Bottas obviously had a great start but I'm not convinced Vettel had a bad one. He seemed to get away well and just got outdragged by Bottas on that ridiculously long run in to the first corner
- During the race, Vettel was near perfect but the Ferrari just couldn't live with the Merc on US tyres. Bottas had a few scruffy moments, the huge flat spot moment being the main one. After that Bottas had to nurse the car home to take care of the wounded tyres.
I'm not sure Vettel could have done more over the entire weekend, whereas Bottas did drop something here and there.

Crikey, now Hamilton's in 3rd position. Really guys? Can't you vote for a driver who didn't have one of his worst weekends in recent history?
People other than Bottas and Vettel had decent weekends, but none of them were named Lewis Hamilton or Jolyon Palmer!

Very tempted to vote Bottas (I was very happy with his first win), very impressed with Vettel again, but voted Räikkönen. Somebody has to spell his name correctly, after all.
But very happy with Wally's first win!

I think by now we can all say with certainty that Hamilton KNOWS how to get his setup right 99.9% of the time. As such it's unfair to say he was lacking in setting up the car with his team of engineers if his teammate was able to get it right. Sometimes the car has an issue that isn't easily noticed and sometimes teams and drivers will struggle not knowing something is inherently wrong with the chassis or a system. Such was the case with (I think) Massa who could not get his car do do what he felt should have been easy over a couple of weekends and when they changed his chassis suddenly they were able to set it up to his liking and times improved significantly. And if Lewis did indeed have issues, it might also explain why he struggled in Qualy as well.
In Sochi Lewis may very well have been off, but I would never call out a driver who is as proven as he is because he AND his team were unable to find the right balance. I prefer to wait and see how the following weekend(s) go for him and if it continues it might be indicative of an issue with the car.
