I believe that John Surtees leaving Lotus at the end of the 1960 season when Chapman had offered him the No 1 driver position was a bad decision.

Although he went on to have a successful career especially with Ferrari & then became a constructor in his own right I believe he would have won multiple titles if he stayed at Lotus.

He was faster than the young Jim Clark which was probably why Chapman offered him the job.
John was improving & learning also as he was just making the transition from 2 wheels.
