Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
Seb and Rosberg will incur a five-place grid penalty for changing their gearboxes but it will be interesting to see where they qualify and finish in the race.

Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
Lewis to do Q3 on a softer compound maybe? Bit of a gamble but worth a punt? I don't know the time difference between compounds.
Should I grow a beard?
Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
I don't see how it's worth it in Q3?

Did I just hear that Hamilton is on his 5th ICE whereas Rosberg has plenty to spare? At this stage in the season? That's laughable!

Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
Everything is really conspiring against a head to head Rosberg V Hamilton battle.

Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
One of the reasons I think Rosberg will win the title. Not sure exactly how many penalties Lewis will have to take or when but surely Hamilton would take a big hit in penalties like McLaren did that time at a track you can overtake.Invade wrote:Did I just hear that Hamilton is on his 5th ICE whereas Rosberg has plenty to spare? Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
Yep, and not much has been made of that but Hamilton will have at least two 10 places for engine parts and is also only a reprimand away from a ten place due to some very fastidious stewarding.
I would expect him to take a penalty at Hockenheim or Spa and maybe Malaysia. If nothing else goes wrong.

Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
Hamilton has just been delivered a big slice of luck, Vettel with a 5 place penalty and Rosberg with a 5 place penalty. Huge slice of luck when he seemed slow so far... In 2015 in the first 12 races, Nico was only better at Austria and Spain. This is a terrible track for Lewis. The luck swings around?
Having said that, Lewis suspension will probably fail in Q3 the way this season has gone.

I would wait and see if Hamilton puts it on pole and is fastest yet. Rosbergs car is ready.lamo wrote:Hamilton has just been delivered a big slice of luck, Vettel with a 5 place penalty and Rosberg with a 5 place penalty. Vettel has been well unlucky this year. Without the DNS and DNF he would be right up there in the title fight matching 2 drivers in Mercs.

This track is proving to be a real car breaker. Can't remember seeing anything like it before.

The yellow bumps / kerbs are a real nuisance, if not a mockery! They're bad enough to put a driver's safety in jeopardy.
Disqualifying a lap seems more healthier.

Three suspension failures today. That's very bad, something is wrong with the design of the kerbs in Austria.

I won't be surprised if they remove the yellow kerbs for the race. They seem too dangerous.

It's not just the yellow kerbs it seems. The loads going through the suspension on the serrated kerbs is huge.UnlikeUday wrote:I won't be surprised if they remove the yellow kerbs for the race. They seem too dangerous.

I like it! Play at own risk. My vote they stay.
Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
Sabotage, gifted win for Lewis! Oh wait, wrong Merc driver. Nevermind, these things happen.
Anyway this is the first time this season Nico will start off the front row since Singapore 2015.

It's not mandatory to even be on the curbs.

If Lewis wins qualifying 3rd, that will be a very cheap one. Never a fan of the slower driver lucking into a winKingVoid wrote:Sabotage, gifted win for Lewis! Oh wait, wrong Merc driver. Nevermind, these things happen.![]()

Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
Sweet day for Toro Roso....Sainz dropped a bearing!
Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
On the other hand might it not be a sensible idea to not push it to the limit, stay off the curbs and register a reasonable but safe time in the knowledge that Ros/Vett will be behind you regardless. Not that he may have a choice in it, he's looking pretty poor again so far this weekend.lamo wrote:If Lewis wins qualifying 3rd, that will be a very cheap one. Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
Unless he pulls a Spain and was holding something back all Friday/Saturday monring this is looking like Lewis' worst weekend all season.Lojik wrote:On the other hand might it not be a sensible idea to not push it to the limit, stay off the curbs and register a reasonable but safe time in the knowledge that Ros/Vett will be behind you regardless. Wehrlein will be further up, Perez and Sainz are not participating. Perhaps even Q3?

Interesting tomorrow, if I'm right all Red Bulls and Ferraris on SS and Mercedes on US.

Looks like Intermediate Q3. Will shake things up and be good for Red Bull if so
Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
This weekend has been really interesting so far...really looking forward to this race
Re: Austrian GP Qualifying and Race Thread
Very interesting with Vettel on softs for the race, also Red Bull could go well in qualifying here. With Hamiltons awful starts we could have a genuine race on our hands tomorrow with Red Bulls, Mercedes and Ferrari.
Mercedes need Nico on pole, I wonder if Lewis is in a position to beat him he might be asked to abort his lap to protect Nico?

Is it me or does the time between sessions seem longer this qualifying?
