Official Le Mans 2016 Thread

Post by Asphalt_World »

Can't believe it's come around again. Seems only a year since the last one!

Time to make sure this weekend is clear of everything and that the sofa is reserved. I just love it. First practice is rather wet.

Interesting new tyres that they're trying. Slickimediates!

Basically it's not good at dissipating water and the tyre basically looks like a slick. However it's a lot softer than a slick and the rubber rolls around any lump or bump in the road and finds grip. Perfect for slightly damp racing and when a dry line is appearing.

I'm not enough of a fan to watch the whole thing, but I usually watch an hour or two. I do enjoy playing the "spot the former F1 drivers" game. I also love the circuit. I can't imagine the Mulsanne straight before the two kinks were added.

Webber is in LMP1. Davidson, Buemi and Nakajima are in a team. Lotterer. Di Grassi. Kobayashi. Young Prost (Not F1 but related), Heidfeld and Nelson Piquet (I'm assuming Jr.) are in a team together too. If my buddy is up for watching some of it I'll knock up some Le Mans drinking F1 bingo squares.

As I was typing in my dilemma between watching the start of Le Mans or F1 qualifying, I realised Ireland (my home nation) are playing Belgium at the same time as all three events! Looks like I'll probably watch the Ireland match, watch an hour of Le Mans, watch a recording of the F1, more Le Mans, then watch the Portugal match, and then settle down of the night watching Le Mans. The joys of being an unemployed college student on holidays :D Still annoying the way everything clashes though.

Disappointed that Nick Tandy doesn't get to defend his title, these WEC drivers seem to get jobs for life.

Well his preference is F1, Nick Tandy has no such choice.

I'm looking forward to the race. Will watch off and on and catch as much as I can.

Let's see how durable the Ford GT's are, if they hold up I think they will own their class.

For privateer teams only is what they're talking about. Possibly only for overtaking, but possibly on every lap in certain places. This will allow them to run higher downforce but then have less drag on the straights.

Could close things up really well to the factory teams.

Fixed that up for you.

He could have left F1 to drive WEC if that's what he really wanted to do.

You seem to be wanting to make some kind of case for him being bound and tied to F1.

For those people not having the WEC app or Eurosport, Quest TV are showing bits of the race on their freeview channel, and on facebook live and on their Youtube channel. At least in the UK. Not sure if it's geolocked?

Yes top 5 are all Porsche, Toyota, and Audi, mixed up. If not for that one long Audi garage stop,it would have been top 6. Right now,the pecking order is not established.

The Le Mans smartphone app is amazing. Live timing works brilliantly and if you click on any car it changes to a picture of that car and you can then scroll forward or backward to see the gaps to the cars around it.

All for free! Yes F1, FREE.

I could watch the on-board of a GTE car racing through the night trying to overtake the car in front for hours. I don't know why it's so addicting to watch!

F1 could learn more than a few things about the fan access in WEC, and not just as the circuit either. The app/timing stuff is lightyears ahead of the F1 offerings and you dont have to pay for the privilege either.

Plus the ticket costs is incredible value and you can wander around huge areas of the circuit. They also lay on buses down to the far reaches of the circuit whenever you like.

I went to the Silverstone round last year and the difference in access compared to F1 is mindblowing. I can only imagine the amount of money I would have had to pay to stand in the pit building on the balcony above the pits, mess around in the actual pit building, loiter around the back of the garages etc.... got all that for the price of the ticket at WEC, would barely have got a round of beers in at the F1.

Webber's #1 Porsche is in serious trouble in the pits. Chances of winning the race are practically gone.

Yep, all that and the cars are seriously quick. It's not like some tiny series of slow cars and unrecognisable drivers either.

Nope, although watching that fella from Greys Anatomy flounder around (Patrick Dempsey?) was a good laugh. Best laugh of the day was watching all the crazies get word that Webber was walking up the back of the pits after his retirement. Never seen so many people do the 200m up the pitlane to grab a photo, he was in the motorhome by the time I got there and couldn't even bear to look out of the window lol, the face he pulled when he saw the kerfuffle outside was a picture.

I'm only following along casually due to the bizarre coverage Fox Sports is offering here (30 minute blocks every hour until 10:30), but I'm happy to see the Ford GTs doing so well. Beautiful car, and like the original GT40 it seems to be causing Ferrari some trouble at Le Mans :D
