Senna v Brundle F3 Film

Post by Argentum »

A film covering the epic 1983 F3 season, involving Ayrton Senna and Martin Brundle is to be released soon.

Sounds really interesting.

To be frank, this film is building a mountain out of a mole hill. If they're really going to try to portray that season as a closely fought battle between Senna and Brundle, they're reaching pretty far. Senna won 13 races and set 14 pole positions in an 18 race season. He dominated. The only reason that it was relatively close in terms of points was that Martin consistently finished right behind Senna on the podium. He hung around and Senna had a couple of DNF results that kept things close. In terms of performance though, it's wasn't that close.

Didn't Brundle win 9 or 10 races in the same season?

I agree with sandman, I don't know why to get excited about this. From wikipedia:
The 1983 season is among the most fondly remembered in the history of the championship due to the head-to-head title battle between future Formula One stars Ayrton Senna and Martin Brundle - both driving Toyota-powered Ralt chassis, prepared by West Surrey Racing and Eddie Jordan Racing respectively. Senna built up a commanding advantage by winning the first nine races in succession, but a series of retirements for the Brazilian later in the year allowed Brundle to close the gap. The Brit took the points lead heading into the series finale, but Senna dominated the race to secure the title.

It would still be nice to see some footage yes but until they make a movie Senna vs Prost from both drivers' POV I'm not really rushing to see another F1 movie.

Senna won 12 and Brundle 7. However Brundle won 5 races when Senna retired so only beat him on 2 occasions when both finished.

Sounds a bit like Senna v Prost in 1989, except it was 7-1 Senna's way and that Prost won the championship.

I think that's inaccurate but it's kinda hard to confirm. There are several different "official" stats for that season.

During that season Senna compared Brundle to Jim Clark, I read some book on Senna a few years back and while I'm too young to have followed that F3 season (wasn't even born) the book certainly described it in such a way that it was incredible. I'd definitely be interested in learning more.

I think I recall from Brundle's book (which is a reasonably good read I thought) that Senna once had his brake ducts partially covered in order to get the brakes heated quick and during the race would be reaching out to remove this tape in order to stop them overheating.

Hope I'm recalling that correctly. I always thought that was pretty cool.

From memory at the time Senna was a rookie in the series and Brundle was at least in his second year (maybe further).

Paid up and watched it. Very disappointing. Mainly a series of talking heads telling stories. Who to believe? You'll make up your mind based on your existing preference. I was hoping for more on-track action but it's only a couple of snippets that you can probably find on youtube. They could have had all that commentary over real race footage, but they didn't. Disappointed.

Yeh i saw that. I thought it would have been good if he could have kept Senna back for a while longer
