McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
Genuinely just a bit of fun,
What lap will the last McLaren retire in Melbourne? Fire away.
There's a poll with some options but please leave a comment with a specific lap time!
I will go for lap 15.

Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
They haven't run a stint longer than 13 laps so far in testing with the engine turned out. They've got two weeks to sort out reliability. So I'm going to go with 23 laps.
Maybe they'll just treat the race as a test session. If they have a problem, they'll try fix it and send them out again regardless of how many laps down they end up

They'll both finish.
Remember after testing last year people were questioning whether 10 cars would finish.

Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
Both will finish. They will just turn revs down if engine isn't yet ready.

Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
I think 1 will finish, but it will surprise everyone by how high it finishes.
The other will fail within the opening 3 laps, or possibly on the grid.

One will finish, but a number of laps down. I'll suspect they'll just treat Oz like a test session.
Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
I think one won't even leave the garage due to a sensor issue..
..but I honestly wondered how Oz last year would turn out, and I was pleasantly surprised. I think Honda will at least have sorted it out so it can run a race, albeit on a reduced engine setting.
Maybe by Barcelona we will see the wick turned up? And maybe by Singapore we will see its full-punch?
Realistically though, who knows - ROLL ON AUS!!!!!

Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
In a strange twist the Honda engine decides not to blow up, break down or in any other way fail on Saturday. McLaren lock out the front row, Mercedes behind them utterly confused. Nobody else makes 107% but the FIA grants the entire field special dispensation. The lights go out on Sunday, at which point plumes of smoke emanate from the back of both cars. An 18-car pile up is the result [assuming Manor make the grid] and the McLarens pull away steadily. Somehow they complete 3 laps, albeit behind the Safety Car and having to go through the pit lane. One car then stops, leaving the other to finish lap 4 and park as the winner of a half-points 'race'.

On lap 24, with one lap down due to time already spent in pitbox.
The end is near

Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
Can't see the point of running the engine at 80%, Honda want to win long term so I think that they will run it till it breaks ! Just another test day, so 30+ laps In P1

Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
Honda did thst during testing. Keep in mind that they can use only 4 PUs this season. Honda will rather gradually turn up the revs rather than blow one PU after another.Option or Prime wrote:Can't see the point of running the engine at 80%, Honda want to win long term so I think that they will run it till it breaks ! Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
they should be much further up the road , ....I can see some long face's in the McLaren garage , and when Alonso wears a long face , its long enough to go all the way round , particulary as the Ferrari looks half decent ,but its early days yet , we'll get a clearer picture by a couple of race's in

We are all saying this about Red Bull this time last year and they had things sorted by the first race. I think McLaren will get at least one car to the finish.
Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
Renault engines had done a heck of a lot more running than the Honda has by the time the final test day rolled round.j man wrote:We are all saying this about Red Bull this time last year and they had things sorted by the first race. I think McLaren will get at least one car to the finish.

Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
These cars are so complex that they minor problems they've been having have had a serious effect on their track time. They've had oil leaks, water leaks and seal failures. Not catastrophic failures as some try to make them out to be, just small nuisances that limit track time, which limits the amount of time they can spend learning about the chassis. McLaren and Honda will get on top of these issues, it's only a matter of timeslide wrote:ericb is now saying McLaren won't be competitive for several months !

Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
Yes. Renault had got the PU running halfway decent in Bahrain testing. RBR didn't get to run a full race distance but that was because of the packaging in the RB10. They knew what to fix but they hadn't had the time to do it in Bahrain.Laura23 wrote:Renault engines had done a heck of a lot more running than the Honda has by the time the final test day rolled round.j man wrote:We are all saying this about Red Bull this time last year and they had things sorted by the first race. Still I think one car will reach the finish. Not saying that will be full distance - I think the Mercs might lap them.

No lap prediction.
One will retire via Honda power unit issues.
One will retire due to contact with another car.

I reckon of the McLaren's won't make the starting grid it will break down but the other one will be in the points. If they got a podium that will be an amazing achievement but I don't think that will happen.

Jensen Button to finish 3rd
Alonso to retire on the lap after his first pitstop, lap 12/13 I reckon

IMHO, both will finish (but outside top 10)
too fast to slow down
Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
I genuinely can't see either Macca making the finish line. Firstly, I presume they will still have their unreliability - they must have really, because they simply haven't fully 'tested'? Secondly, I presume they will want to preserve their engines given the restrictions - meaning that they cannot afford to run them if there is a serious risk of complete failure?
I'll say the last Macca will retire on lap 29.

Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
Given the testing, I voted 21-30.
I am quietly hoping they can both finish, given last year I did not think Renault/Ferrari powered cars would last 20laps but they actually surprised me with their reliability when Aus came

Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
I think one of them will make the podium!
Re: McHonda Oz Retirement Sweepstake
They managed 100 laps one day with some good stints. So I say one will finish and they will have to resolve issues on the other.
However, that may be the case for many teams...

I think they'll qualify deadlast and the engines would die by around lap 20 or so.

Alonso will still have after effects from the Barca crash so Magnusson will be in his car. Turns out McLaren Honda have been sandbagging all the time. Jenson will lead the race until a late puncture, caused by running over debris from the customary Maldonado / Perez brain fade crash.
Kevin will get his first race win with Jenson taking third spot with Rosberg in the middle of the sandwich. Hamilton will have been rear ended by Vettel at the first pit stops.
