Ouch, strong words from Jo Ramirez on Checo.

Really surprises me as I always thought Perez came across as a humble guy.

Yeah surprises me too. I guess it's a big adjustment for a young guy to make. Well they're pretty much all more likeable at 30 than when they start I'd say. And the social side is important, as I think Di Resta found as well.

Very interesting what Ramirez says, about Gutierrez too.
I also thought Checo improved a lot in last half of 2013, and it seems he is close to Hulk's speed in 2014, so he must be quite good.

Not sure he was referring to the likable-ness of him as a person, I thought it was more a lack of involvement with the rest of the team and car. Difficult to tell from a few sentences written.

McLaren should also apply those words themselves. They should not be so arrogant. "We want the new Lewis Hamilton" ...

the way I read it was that because he was so arrogant as a person, the other team members didn't like spending time or working with him. Which resulted in the team being distanced from him.

So many ways you can read it though.

When they fired him, the reason they gave were that he was not performing good enough (when he was very good at the second half of the season) and they were giving his place to "the next Lewis Hamilton" which apparently backfired and with Checo featuring great performances, now they regret that decision and now they´re looking for other sort of excuses.

I have a neutral opinion of Perez. But when he kept disagreeing with the penalty assessed on him after the wreck with Massa in Canada, I thought he was being pretty arrogant about it. It seemed like he refused to take the slightest bit of responsibility for what happened.

Surely for something to be 'news' it has to be 'new'? Pf1 main site having 8 month old news doesn't surprise me though.

Perez doesn't take responsibility for any on-track incidents. Look at him and Grosjean at Spa, and the number of drivers he forced off the track at Monaco last year.

"They" aren't doing anything. As far as I can see Ramirez hasn't been part of McLaren for quite a while.

The thing with Perez is that he isn't a bad driver but the problem is that his ability looks somehow masked by tyres and having a car that is easy on tyres. That's when he performs well. If not than he doesn't look so special to me. In comparison to Button he isn't so smooth. Quite prone to get into incidents and not taking responsibility for them. If I had to choose a second driver next to my top driver I would choose Ricciardo, Hulk, Bottas or Grosjean ahead of Perez.

I did not think he did that bad at McLaren but they felt different and released him.
Fair enough, but I fail to see the reason to bad mouth him. Or as Rekonizakilla pointed out rehash an eight month old story.

Have to agree with this comment - IMO the vast majority of drivers become arrogant when they show enough promise to be chosen by a top team. Off the top of my head, the only drivers that haven't fallen into this trap are Massa and Riccardio. Even so, most become far less arrogant as they get older.

Can't say I'm particularly suprised by the comments made by Ramirez as a) Perez was sacked by Mclaren so quickly and b) he was far too aggressive against Button (his team mate)when he had only just joined the team!

Personally, I appreciate team personnel speaking their mind about drivers, once they have left the team. IMO its only unacceptable if they're still working for the team.

Let's face it - its the only chance we have of discovering the 'true face' of drivers within the team!

So does Lewis, Seb, Alonso and even Schumi.

I don't understand how people can't see they do have an arrogance culture not much different to Footballers. I am not at all shocked by this comment regarding Perez, I have noticed how he took a gripe at McLaren when he was gone. I also notice how a lot of the time it's never Perez's fault when something goes wrong.

Again I am not surprised by this comment.

I like Perez.

His aggressive driving is great to watch, I won't forget him sticking his McLaren up the inside of Button's last year in Monaco. Brave or stupid, either way it's what we want to see.

Not taking the blame for anything makes him a true racing driver by character. More of that I say!

Well i tended not to like Perez in 2013 because he was a bit too reckless especially Monaco, but
He seemed pretty humble when Maclaren got rid of him, no outbursts, but thanked the team for the support (this was even before he knew he still had a job with FI).
MW was seemed quite unhappy about the decision.
To it seems Jo has some hidden agenda's.

Difficult guy to like. Arrogance on it's own and in moderation is fine - some of the big names past and present have had plenty of it.

But the interview refers to him not being a team player, not getting stuck in, acting like having got the seat was the be all and end all. That's the kiss of death for a driver. He was a panic signing when Lewis put his notice in. It was a poor decision.

.

I thought the same thing! I understand if the OP may have missed the thread on it last year given the months that have passed and if PF1 never reported on it at the time, but there should be a thread on this from last year. :-P Should be some other good points in that thread if we can dig it up.

I'm hit or miss on Perez though. I can definitely see the arrogance at times with him, but I do enjoy his driving on track and will always remember his first Australian GP - the car control with a tricky car in slippery conditions was awesome to watch and grabbed my attention right away. But his "perceived" personality has turned me off of him at times.
