we heard the english-spoken broadcasts but there was a comment in German from Vettel as well and I was wondering what it was - we don't often hear that.

I never heard any German spoken. If I had I'd certainly try to help you out.

Also just wanted to say, I didn't hear it, and I don't speak German, but I really wish I was in a position to help.

A link to the radio transmission would be good. I don't remember hearing it but I was watching BBC highlights.

On Lap 26 he responds to the message "Sebastian, Daniel is on a two-stop. Daniel is on a two-stop." with the comment "[I'm] thinking about focusing", which does sound like he says something German that ends in "volksig" (not even a proper German word I think) but it's just his accent making an English word sound like a German one.

More importantly, who did he say it to? Everyone on the pit wall who matters is an English speaker, so I can only guess that it was a plea to Uncle Marko to get the nasty men to stop making him be a team player.

Have I solved it? He said "think about boxing" but Rocky (?) encouraged him to stay out to avoid going with their plan of 3 stops. Vettel was really concerned about his tyre deg and wanted to pit when Ric overtook him. I suspect at that point he didn't realize Ric was doing so well on the 2 stop strategy.

PS - if there was German in that clip I certainly didn't pick it up. Sorry

That's a good candidate. it certainly makes sense that those are words he could say. Is it "boxing" or "focusing"? I thought I heard one of the commentators (but it's not on BBC's iPlayer video) saying he was telling the team to stop talking to him about Ricciardo because he was trying to focus on the job at hand.

A bit of back-translating this and playing it through in my head a few times and I think I'm remembering Rosberg saying that he didn't want to keep telling the pit wall how his fuel flow was every time past the pits (easy to mix two Germans up wouldn't you say?).

I think backdoc may have it. At least we're in agreement that it wasn't German language but it definitely has that German sound of the word ending "...sig" when he says it on the radio.

It was definitely boxing. Just wanted to make sure we were referring to the same audio clip. I recall it watching the race as I was surprised Seb was going through his tyres so fast. As an Aussie slash Webber slash Ricciardo fan I have been so used to Webber destroying his tyres before Seb that it just seemed unusual that Seb was basically begging for a pit stop.
