Mark Hughes has been wrong a lot this season. He thought Red Bull were on par with Mercedes at Portimao and Mercedes would be quicker at Zandvoort.

Yeah I know that what he (or anyone) says isn’t necessarily accurate but I thought it worth sharing anyway. I can see what he’s saying but I’m wondering about the lack of improvement from FP1 to FP2 from Merc, seems odd. He puts it down to engine mode in FP1 but I’m not convinced.

I would speculate that they're using Bottas as a testing platform to try out different parts to try to get to the bottom of their engine gremlins. Not ideal in the midst of the closest inter-team championship battle in years.
Surely both Mercedes & Red Bull will give priority to driver's world title as it does have more prestige than constructor's gold.
It's the gold that keeps the boat afloat.

Is the drivers championship more prestigious than the constructors ? I'm not sure it is.
I don't think Horner or Toto will care more for the constructor's title over Max or Lewis winning the title. The WDC has more bragging rights when compared to constructor's (even though WCC is where the money is).
My thought was actually more about the WDC. Both Hamilton and Verstappen benefit from having their team mates in the midst at the front to provide strategic options. If Verstappen is leading with Hamilton and Bottas 2nd and 3rd then Mercedes can split strategies to win the race. Without Bottas there, Verstappen just has to mirror Hamilton's strategy.

Amus have reported the same regarding engine modes.

Mini world war 3 between Max & Hamilton......
.

Whether Verstappen wins the drivers' championship this year or not, Red Bull need to do something to calm him down and make him grow up, otherwise he will end up a conceited danger as Vettel was. If he does win the championship this will be very difficult for Red Bull, but someone needs to get through to him.

I can respect his approach to extract the most from every race in isolation and his "yield or we crash" attitude. Its straightforward and simple but I can see him losing out to more circumspect opponents in the future if he doesn't start to pick his battles.

Yesterday, the practice sessions were a tale of two halves...
- The McLaren look 3rd best in qualy pace but lose out big time in race pace.
- The RB cars are faster in medium & fast corners than the Mercedes cars.
- McLaren, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Williams & even Haas car had superior straight line speed to the Mercedes.

Fair enough.

Where has the straight line speed gone from Merc then? They’re only slightly faster than Red Bull according to the graphics Uday posted.

What tv channel in the US has FP3 and quali, now that ESPN has chosen to air college football all day?

ESPN has touted throughout FP1 and FP2 how F1 has become soooo popular in the US.. Then they pull a stunt like this.

I think it is very interesting to see how different people interpret this video very differently. Some people think Lewis rightfully reclaims a lost position, and others think Lewis is doing this just to discredit Max.

I think it's the former. But it was a bit sloppy of Lewis to let Verstappen overtake him early on.

A couple of interesting stats for this grand prix:
- The winner has either been n pole or in second place. No one who's qualified lower than the front row has won the race.
- In the last five races, the driver qualifying on 4th has had a DNF.
- A total of 49 lap times were deleted on Friday for track limits violations.

Hamilton will argue Verstappen broke the 'gentlemen's agreement' of not jumping the queue for a lap. Verstappen will argue they were several turns away from the final corner so that's not relevant. Personally I think it's much ado about nothing, we see this happen almost every weekend at some point and often done in a far ruder manner. A big deal has been made of it in this case because it's the two championship contenders.

What's interesting is it shows the mindset of them both though, both being absolutely unwilling to be overtaken by the other, even on a prep lap. I'd be amazed if these two don't have another coming together before the end of the year.

All the cars were sliding yesterday. I feel embarrassed for my host country. This is such a poor excuse for a race track

I wish they could be quicker at deleting laps for track limits. Seemed about 2 minutes before Bottas had his deleted then.

Seems close between Merc and Red Bull.

On a few occasions this year Red Bull have clearly ran more aggressively in this session (Imola, France, one of the Austria rounds spring to mind) so if that’s the case here then Merc should be fastest come quali. However, I don’t know if that’s still the case recently.

Perez is finally looking good in qualifying. I think this is the first race where he has been on par with Max. Both top teams seems to be evenly matched.

Perez has genuinely looked good. There is no hiding and this is teams real pace, may be last min changes but it will come down the driver to nail the lap without exceeding the limits.

I missed most of practice, why was Stroll 53 seconds off the pace for the first 50 minutes?

I would like to see a convincing Perez performance with pole position and a win on merit. But let's see.

Presumably track limits deletions putting one of the 3 minute cool down laps as his fastest competitive legal lap.

Checousually doesn't the timing sheets on fire in practice sessions. The last time he looked strong in FP sessions was in Baku.

Turkey wasnt representative. Maybe they have turned the engines down due to reliability. Or maybe theyll turn em up for q3
