Intriguing move.

I don't know if I can handle that... "Not my favorite at all" is a massive understatement. Oh, crap...

I didn't care much for Waanica the driver, but I rather enjoy Danica the announcer. She's knowledgeable, eloquent, and presents herself very well.

First thought that came into my head was what does she know about formula 1? She was a average indycar driver. A poor nascar driver and has had none of the success that subsequent drivers in series have had. And had had Zero experience of any type of formula 1 car. What will she be able to bring to the table to enhance the coverage.

My first thoughts are not positive. Wire2004 read my mind. Nevertheless I will keep an open mind and let her performance make my decision. An odd choice I think.

Johnny and Karun both have F1 experience, and they're both blithering idiots. Karun esp is long-winded af, and rarely brings anything useful to the discussion that anyone else couldn't bring.

I think some of you will be surprised. This isn't hotheaded, loose cannon Danica the driver (whom I didn't care for at all).

Harsh! Herbert is a great personality but I agree he doesn't offer much. Karun I think has more of a focused role so I do find his contributions worth hearing. Ex - F1 drivers are hit and miss. Of the ones I've seen/heard

Brundle - Legend
Button - Excellent
Chandhok - Good in the role he his in
Coulthard - Good
Davidson - Likeable and good in the role he his in
Herbert - Pointless
Hill - Pointless
Rosberg - Like his forthrightness and overall good, but the constant "If you want to beat Lewis blah blah" gets on my wick
Webber - Nice guy but tries too hard

Here's how I rate them:

Brundle - Plays off Crofty and becomes worse when next to him. Liability.
Button - Sticks to his guns and generally unaffected by Crofty. Good.
Chandhok - Agrees entirely too much with Crofty. Liability.
Coulthard - Not on the same broadcast as Crofty, therefore excellent.
Davidson - Willing to tell Crofty when to shut up. Good.
Herbert - Far too close to Crofty. Liability.
Hill - Generally seems to have no respect for Crofty, therefore I respect him. Solid.
Rosberg - Willing and ready to shut Crofty down at the drop of a hat. Legend.
Webber - Not on the same broadcast as Crofty, therefore excellent.

That would be an understatement. Crofty is such a consummate idiot that he significantly degrades my enjoyment of the Grand Prix simply by being part of the broadcast.

The only positive of his commentary is that it reminds one to appreciate the beauty of silence.

Ant & Paul are both aces imho. Very good. Really, to me, they easily bring the most good info to the broadcast of any of the regular crewmembers.
Chandhok is terrible. Longwinded and frequently has to be corrected by Paul & Ant.
Johnny is the village idiot.
Damon is fine but seems to be getting past it.
Button is very good.
Rosberg is excellent.
Crofty says silly things, but his job is to sort of tie it all together with someone yapping constantly in his ear -not to provide technical info. He doesn't bother me that much.
Ted is just a legend to me. Master of the pit lane and paddock reporters.
Natalie is great at ''lifestyle' interviews, and Rachel always has some good questions for the drivers.
And thank God Sky passed on Buxton when NBC stopped carrying F1.

I agree here.

Crofty's about as painful as walking barefoot on Lego. I also think Brundle's a worse co-commentator for having Crofty next to him too. I never thought i'd live to say these words but given a choice between him & Jonathan Legard, give me Legard any day.

Most of the others I don't mind with the exception of Herbert. For some reason he reminds me of the little kid in the playground who'll do & say whatever it takes just to be able to hang around with the big kids. That's probably very unfair on him as he is a 3x GP winner but that's how I see him.

I can't help but notice non of you have given the gals a go in your commentator reviews. Ya bunch of misogynistic mugs ya.

I think both Rachel & Natalie do a great job in their respective roles, & now they're being used to a broader extent by hosting FP1, they should only get better.

I started by just focusing on the ex-driver commentators as it started with Danica's guest appearance.
For the record, I don't like Crofty and agree that he can drag Brundle down. But please, not Legard....
Rachel and Natalie both excellent.

About 6 months ago I watched the entire 09 and 10 seasons again, honestly nothing is as bad as Legard. Genuinely, properly awful. Even if you forgive him all the "problems".

Legard was intolerable. I quickly got fed of his inane rambling and opted for the BBC radio commentary instead. Which at the time, as it happens, came from our good friend Mr Croft.

I think Croft was better back then, he was more restrained and professional. Since moving to TV though he has continued to commentate as if it's a radio broadcast and as he's gotten comfortable in his position he's started to lark about more and more.

I watched the NBC broadcast for years, right up until it ceased to exist. The Sky product -- taken in a holistic sense -- is certainly superior, although largely down to quantity rather than quality.

But where I don't agree is the commentary situation. I'm no fan of Leigh Diffey, but he is so much better than Crofty it isn't even funny. Diffey has two key attributes that Crofty lacks: a modicum of intelligence, and the understanding that he should shut up from time to time and let someone else talk.

The worst of all is Crofty's sorry excuse for commentary during FP2. It's obvious he has no interest in what goes on during a practice session and even less knowledge, but rather than doing the sensible thing and just leaving it to someone who actually does understand F1, he shows up anyway and spends literally the entire hour talking unrelated rot. You could replace his FP2 commentary with a random bum off the street and you would get the same amount of information out of the experience.

i've watched all of the different f1 broadcasts in the states. someone at liberty had a buddy at espn, gave it to them for free. no commercials is obviously great, and getting more fans. but the announcer screaming in a high pitch, constantly, and kissing lewis' ring, is horribly annoying to me. i watch with no sound often

I'm in agreement with those who have said that the main thing wrong with the Sky coverage in general is Crofty, and anything that might cause him to talk somewhat less is a plus to me. Danica Patrick's commentary, from what I've seen, is generally -- at least about IndyCar -- fairly good. We'll see how she does with F1, but it could end up being interesting.

I am on record somewhere on this forum as not expecting anyone could have been worse than Leigh Diffey, but ever since I've been getting the Sky team (either over F1 TV or from ESPN), I have become aware of just how wrong I was. Both are annoying, but Crofty is on another level.

I assumed this was why he lost FP1 duties. Honestly, I'd rather he just got booted and they promoted Rachel full-time. She's far better informed, lacks the ego and keeps the boys in check.

Agreed, feels like he's dropped the focus and tries to hard to go off on "amusing digressions". There usually follows and awkward pause as Brundle gently tolerates him while trying to keep the train on the tracks.

If you extend to F2 and F3, Extreme E, Brundle jnr is also excellent, Alice Powell doesn't have the best voice but offers some good insight and is likeable, and Jennie Gow has been good too.

If you want the best commentators currently. You need look no further than alex jacques on channel 4 and jack Nicholls on formula e.
Crofty was good when she was doing 5 live. Not so much now. Ben Edwards before his retirement was phoning it in compared to his commentary in the late 90s and 00s for eurosport in formula 1 and indycar.
Was legard really as bad when he did radio vs his TV career.
James allen was good when he did his 5 live stint and proved ITV had a mandate when hamilton came in to f1.
Even Murray walker proved he could still do it. Both when he commented on the nurburgring race in 07/08 for 5 live. And also when he was a guest in the booth for fp1 for sky 1 year at Silverstone.

The problem with crofty. He is knowledgeable and knows his stuff. Not just in f1. But also when he joined the aussie v8 supercars in Melbourne the day before lockdown he has a wide range. He just doesnt seem to utilise this properly. Just give us the knowledge without going off on 3 or 4 tangents.

I really rate Jack Nicholls although I find the fact that he is younger than I am inexplicably annoying

So far Danica has exceeded my expectations. She is not doing a half bad job.

I agree. Much better than I expected.

Strangely enough, her fashion choice leaves me very puzzled... Basic black - fine; shoulder asymmetry - questionable; weird pants legs - just plain weird.

Much worse is the (Texas-oriented) "Americana" on display...

Yeah, the version of American culture that has been presented at the USGP at COTA has been pretty cartoonish over the years.

I still think the guns at Texas Motor Speedway for the IndyCar winner(s) are more cartoonish. Although that car came close.
Anyone in or near North Wales interested in an RC car racing tournament?

I think that may be the case for a few people, but let's see if they admit it....
