Re: Package speed advantages
Just compared the incidence* of winners 1950-2016 rated at slower than 100.5 (ie 0.5 secs per lap):
Packages 15.2%.
Drivers 10.0%.
Cars 6.6%.
Another method that shows the Car is more important than the Driver.
* number of F1 races won by competitors slower than 100.5.

The last time was in 2012 when McLaren-Mercedes and Red Bull-Renault rated at 100.0. Of course two equal top cars made for one of the most exciting seasons. I thought the Lewis/McLaren-Mercedes should have won the WDC. He had a few slow pitstops and some grid penalties. the cars scored 7 wins each....

Two drivers whose reputations seemed greater than their F1 speed: Siffert and Pedro Rodrigeuz. I think what earned them popular acclaim were their exploits in the sports-racing Porsche 917s, esp in the rain at Spa, etc. Siffert also gained fame for winning the 1968 British GP in Rob Walker's Lotus-C...

Like you I have life intervening too much, and F1 has replaced all other forms of motorsport. I am completely out of touch with stock/sprint or other forms of car racing anywhere. During the sixties the SA racers, with bigger budgets and higher tech, built US style sprint cars with 500hp v8 engines;...

Herb: your link jogged my memory: it was also called 'stock-car' racing in SA, and started about 1955. The Johannesburg promoter travelled to the UK (England then!) a lot, and started with Speedway racing in 1949. Henry Long was the Brit and SA champ then in those days. The way you described the gen...

Great story Mercenary! Also tells a lot about Bobby Rahal and Lil Al. What a contrast.
Even in darkest Africa we read about Foyt breaking up the great US series and how blunt and crude he could be.
Andretti spoke highly of the Unsers.

I have always stressed that among the top few GP/F1 drivers there is little difference in speed. However I once saw what a difference a top driver can make in same-cars. Mercenary has a point  , talking of Foyt the man, not the driver. Back in the late-sixties a successful South African oval track sprintcar promoter telephoned Foyt, inviting him to race in SA. Several other US drivers with their cars competed in the SA series from the mid-sixties. AJ's incredib...

No matter how fast rated the driver or car are, it is the combined car-and-driver Package-rating that determines race results and rankings.
