Re: WDC driver-ratings
Just seen on the news that Roger Federer has been beaten by a player ranked 116th. Often seen this in golf, even with say Tiger Woods at his best, being beaten by a player ranked 39th. I don't think Federer or Woods are inferior as athletes in their own fields to any of Fangio, Senna, Alonso, Hamilt...

Re: WDC Car-ratings
Some surprisingly slow cars used by World Driver Champions, that car-rated at slower than 100.5: 1958: Hawthorn's Ferrari 246 Dino. Only skewed WDC points gave this package the WDC ahead of the much faster Vanwall car driven by Moss. 1964: Surtees's Ferrari 158. Unreliability of the much faster Lotu...

Re: Rosberg just went up in my opinion - thanks to Nigel Man
As Moss always said, WDCs so often mess up races. Agree with Argentum here, that the WDC in late 2016 affected Nico's driving/approach. The WDC also affected Lewis's strategy: backing Nico up was not 'racing' for the win, it was 'driving' for the WDC. How much better F1 would...

Data sharing: does anyone know how Schumacher and Rosberg worked/cooperated as team-mates 2010-2012? My 'thinking' is that Nico must have picked up so much from Michael and his data, but I have no evidence. Anyone?

My guy Romain: in an interview about a year ago, Romain said he'd tried too hard to win races from the start, that it was because he'd had some success too soon. He was referring to 2012 at Lotus where he scored a 2nd and two 3rds early on. Then he had those 'incidents' of over-enthusiasm, and says ...

Re: Rosberg just went up in my opinion - thanks to Nigel Man
Whatever the 'accidents' in any season, if your team-mate (or rival) is slightly faster than you, it is usually impossible to win overall. WDC points allocations are not accurate indicators of driver comparisons. Mansell/Wms -Honda in 1986 was clearly faster than Prost/McL-P; just as Hamilton in 201...

Re: WDC package-ratings
Also depends on whether there is competition within teams surely? Within-team competition is important. A team-mate is the greatest threat to any driver going for the WDC, having the same equipment. But only if the team-mate is fast enough. Good examples when team-mates were both fast, close-matche...

Unlikeyouday's post on McLaren is serious! What a problem. I don't think there is any chance of McLaren doing their own engine. Good stats Iamo and interesting topic and discussion. I preferred 2007-2008 to the last three seasons (2014-2016), because there were two teams and three/four drivers fighting at the front in most races. In 2007 no-one else got a win, but in 2009 there were a few outlier wins too, much lik...

Posting on another thread about rookie Irvine daring to overtake Senna, and getting punched in the face for it, reminded me of an even funnier overtake. Back in 1937 two of the 6.0-litre, V16 supercharged Auto-Unions raced in South Africa. The races were handicap events, so Rosemeyer had to drive at...

MistaVega discussing Eddie Irvine in 1997 is a reminder. In 1999 Eddie almost winning the WDC for Ferrari must go down as one of the great underdog performances. In his usual mild, polite and gentle way Felipe Massa said "Having Fernando as a team mate is not easy", referring to their time as team-m...

WDC package-ratings
The packages (car-and-driver combined) are what win WDCs, so perceptions are less skewed than with some drivers or cars. As usual in discussing F1 there are so many qualifications, ifs, buts and howevers. There are more packages here than there were the 67 seasons 1950-2016. Reason is that some driver...

AT car-ratings of 100.2 and 100.3 each provided 9% of the WDC winners. At 100.4 just 3% of the cars. At my...

Exideron: in my post above about the 2010-2016 seasons (on this thread) the thread is about the cars. The 2102 Williams-Renault was not slower than 100.5. I remember 2007-2008 races being very predictable: working on my ratings then, one could virtually predict from qualy times how far apart the cars would be at race-end. Which cars had the biggest advantage but that did not win the WDC? These are figures from my System, and are independent of the car (ie car-neutral). Most WDCs driver-rated at 100.0: from Fangio in 1951 and Ascari 1952,1953 to Vettel in 2011, 2013 and Hamilton in 2014, 2015. While not being able to argue strongly enough either way about telemetry access or availability, I don't think it will affect inter driver competitiveness. It may close gaps between, as Lewis asserts with Nico Rosberg. But that can work both ways too: back in 2013 (? ) Monaco qualy Nico was consiten...
