Re: 2018 U.S. Grand Prix Race Thread

. Basically, Hamilton has almost certainly beaten Vettel, likewise, Vettel has almost certainly beaten Bottas and Raikkonen, HOWEVER, Bottas is only 11 points ahead of Raikkonen. IF Ferrari had any sense they would back Raikkonen to the hilt to try and get him third place in the drivers' championsh...

Re: 2018 U.S. Grand Prix Race Thread

So how come Ferrari are suddenly quick again when they have left the upgrade they brought to Austin unused in the pits? I think its going to be a frantic first few laps. No point in playing safe anymore so I expect a few 'prangs', Max usually makes big strides early on Ric is in the mix and Ocon ha...

Well at least we now know that the Verstopper sausages work. Stopped Max just fine! Was kind of hoping that Max would be right up there though. Would have been great entertainment watching Sebastian do a gut check about when and where to pass Max. Still it will be fun to watch Seb navigate hi...

Re: 2018 U.S. Grand Prix Race Thread

The two stopper could be a genuine option tommorrow. Especially with a track that will be quite 'green'. But if it's any of the front runners they should commit to it early if they decide to go down that route. It was a strategy that Verstappen used well last year, forcing Vettel into a compromised ...

Super close at the front, did Hamilton run wide at the same point Gasly got his lap disallowed for though? Bit confusing because they showed highlights of Gasly running wide at T9 (With Max and Dan) but he was actually penalised for running wide at T19. Lewis went wide at at T9 too, as did several ...

Wow super close. It's frustrating for Vettel with that 6 hundreths he missed out on 'pole' by dropping him behind Ricciardo. Raikkonen starting on ultras could be fun, he could be a real nuisance to Hamilton if he gets a good start.

Re: 2018 U.S. Grand Prix Free Practice & Qualifying Thread

It's not arbitrary. Arbitrary means there's arbitration involved: if it is a 100% black and white automatic penalty, there is nothing arbitrary about it. Does a driver really endanger anyone by braking a foot too late and entering the pit lane at 81 km/h instead of 80? No. But they'll get a penalty...

Re: 2018 U.S. Grand Prix Free Practice & Qualifying Thread

After FP3 I think it's possible the Ferrari upgrade package has once again changed the pecking order. I can't predict what will happen in qualifying (especially if it's dry). Some on twitter are saying that Hamilton had to back off by half a second in the final sector of his final flying lap. If th...

It's a bit of a clichè but Vettel must just want this season over and done with so he can regroup and refocus in the winter. Almost everything that can go wrong is going wrong.

It will be difficult for Leclerc if he starts of in Sebs back pocket. If he's as quick as I suspect he is then he'll be capable of beating Vettel in a fair few races right away and mounting his own challenge for the title assuming the car is good enough. For drivers in leading teams, it is difficul...

Vettel started the 2018 season driving perhaps as well as he's ever driven, but the mistakes have tended to creep in during 'squeaky bum time'. It was partially true of last season too but not to the same extent. The main difference between this season and last season is that Vettel was still produ...

Re: Silly Season 2019 (Updated - Russell joins Williams)

Vandoorne switches to Formula E. It's a shame not to see him on the grid next year IMO, I would have liked to see him go up against Kvyat at Toro Rosso, I think his GP2 dominance shows that he had clear potential. I don't think he could be in a more difficult place on the grid in terms of standing ...

If Red Bull had two Webber level drivers in 2011 instead of Vettel, then there's a good chance that Hamilton doesn't lose his head and start crashing everywhere. Butterfly effect. I highly doubt that. I don't think Hamilton's issues in 2011 had anything to do with Vettel. Actually he flipped out be...

I'm looking at it I just don't see it. Not trying to be difficult, but I just see Vettel being sliced up and to me Max has acres of room on the outside and just turns in as though Vettel isn't there. I reckon if that had been e.g. Hamilton or Kimi they would have taken a wider line than Max did and...

I don't think that's true. Vettel was all over the kerb and still came together with Max, which suggests that there was no space for him on the track, surely? I'd wait to see where Honda/Red Bull perform next season. They will be a true judge. Don't forget though that Mclaren had the hardest years with that engine which was failing more than Renault by far. Next season will be almost certainly too soon for the Red Bull Honda package to win the title. But...

Coming away without any points has to hurt for Honda. Gasly got hurt by poor strategy and perhaps working the tyres too hard. But Hartley just vanished which sums up his season really. For TR there is definitely value in putting Kvyat in Hartleys seat now.

As much as I think it is absurd to blame Max for the Vettel coming together, he clearly should have been received greater punishment for the Raikkonen incident.

That was clumsy and dangerous. You have to be more aware when rejoining the track. That could have been quite a nasty incident.

Exactly. Raikkonen cruising round the last lap 30 seconds off the pace would have been humiliating for him for pretty much no reward.
