Re: So what if F1 would be a spec series?
I never understand why hardcore F1 fans seem to think it is essential that F1 chase a mass audience.

Re: Ecclestone- "Formula 1, the worst it has ever been"
I certainly remember lots of complaints and concerns regarding the dominance of the big 4.
I do get your point in general though. Nobody says Usain Bolt is bad for athletics or that Serena Williams is bad for women's tennis.

Re: So what if F1 would be a spec series?
F1 is much too close to being a spec series right now! I'm guessing that you would enjoy the field being spread out by several minutes between cars? People have a far too idealistic view of what "opening up the regulations" would do to this sport. As the diversity among car design increases, the ca...

Re: New Qualifying Format - Staggered Eliminations
Brawn were hardly an underdog, the car was built with the vast resources of Honda and started the season as a dominant car. Yeah, cos the 2008 Honda showed us all that 2009 was going to be their year. The car was hideously ugly as well, white and yellow, and with those disgusting wheel cover ...

Re: Return to Proper Qualifying
The days of Senna/Prost putting in flying lap(S!) out at the same time in the final minutes was beyond thrilling. But that has nothing whatsoever to do with the qualifying format and everything to do with the cars and drivers. The current three session system absolutely encourages, and consistently...

Re: Return to Proper Qualifying
I can never quite get why the 1hr 12 lap quali is somehow regarded as "proper" or "traditional" qualifying. The format ran for only 7 seasons! incorrect. traditional qualifying has been round since sat least the 60s. I direct you too Wikipedia. Traditionally before 1996, qualifying was split into t...

Re: Return to Proper Qualifying
Everyone is going to have a different opinion on it. Every format has its pros and cons. The most recent format probably had the least amount of cons but it didn't excite me in the least. Personally I'd prefer a qualifying race of sorts but that level of change is beyond many fans That's a major co...

Re: Return to Proper Qualifying
I think you're missing the point behind the qualifying change. It's not that qualifying was broken, it's that they want to introduce the possibility of an upset and mix up the grid. It's not about qualifying. It's about the race. Change the aero regulations. Why would that mix up the grid? A change...

Re: Return to Proper Qualifying
Because that meant 40 minutes of nothing even in the days with unlimited tyres, engines etc. Nowadays I would be surprised if anyone does more than two runs. Look at what happens now. They have 15 minutes in Q3 and only use half of that. Personally my favorite form of qualifying was one lap shootout.

You still will be able to. Drivers on the cusp will still have to go to max and so will the final two. Without seeing it I can't decide if I will like it or not.

Re: New Qualifying Format - Staggered Eliminations
So only 2 drivers have a chance of getting pole position in the last 1 minute 30? Hate it! Watching 5 or so drivers all going for it at the last second was great. Aside from a wet session, when was the last qualy that 5 guys had a chance of getting pole? This is why I always think Q3 is so overblow...

Re: New Qualifying Format - Staggered Eliminations
Do I want to be entertained, yes please. A 'sport' would require some notion of a level playing field... One good thing, at least the team won't be able to 'coach' the drivers and feed them lap times. You only get a level playing field with a spec series. I'd settle for something approaching a leve...

Re: New Qualifying Format - Staggered Eliminations
As I've already said, I just don't see what is wrong with the current system. Why change this when there is so much else that should be changed? Its being changed merely to try and mix up the grid so in turn will mix up the racing, F1 after all was never about the fastest driver/car running out fro...

Re: New Qualifying Format - Staggered Eliminations
Well I imagine the logic is that all the best races have come about because of mixed up grids so lets mix up the grid. How else could they mix up the grid? I understand that, but it's like making Usain Bolt run 105 metres compared to other running 100, just to make it more exciting. It's not Bolt's...

Re: FIA Changes for 2017 (and '16 Qualification)
I loathe regulations designed to produce good aesthetics. I also think the cars at 722kg are getting quite fat. Personally I have no issue with smaller drivers having a slight advantage. Certainly being heavier set or taller is advantage in most other sports and I see no action to equalize there.

Projecting what type of strategies could be used to exploit this proposed system. So - at Monaco, Marussia get their 2 cars to the front of the lineup before the green light. I love the knockout bit. Something I have been talking about for a few years.
Time ballast in quali - I actually like the idea! Only after the first 6 or so races though. It would be an easy way to make for consistently amazing racing and unpredictable quali.
