Re: 2023 U.S. Grand Prix Race Thread

The purpose of the plank is ultimately for safety as it prevents the car fully bottoming out, and leading to a massive loss of downforce as airflow under the car stops when it grounds out - Most famous case probably being with Senna, where this is seen as the most likely cause the crash. Teams want ...

DQ'd There is no interpretation or grey in the rules with plank wear. It's an absolute measurement, it either meets it or doesn't. Unlucky for both, as neither drivers fault, but car ultimately had to be running too low and gaining a slight advantage from that. It was a stellar drive as well by Hami...

Nothing wrong with Pirelli road tyres. Used them plenty and on a road application and tbh there isn't too much difference between any of the major brands. Obviously depends on selecting the correct tyre for the application and what. If you're putting efficiency tyres designed for a family saloon ca...

Re: The second best car debate

It's a funny one. Mercedes might be the 2nd best car, despite rarely being the 2nd best car on any given weekend. Their peaks haven't been as high, but their troughs not as low either. They've all sort of shuffled about as the season went on. At this moment I'd probably give the nod to Ferrari as 2n...

If you're not hell bent on beating your team mate then I'd question why you're in F1. Some guys are just levels below the guy in the other seat and no matter how hard they try will just get ground down, but.... Russell is good enough to beat Hamilton - at this stage of his career - some of the time,...

I lived in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi for a year. It's about 90 miles SE of Doha. Personally, I found the heat in the Middle East to be stiflingly hot between March and November. Re: Rank the 3 time WDCs

Prost and Senna had very different methods of achieving similar things. Senna may well be the outright fastest man to ever sit in an F1 car. Nobody of that era, possibly ever, beats him on pure pace. However F1 isn't a time trial - it's a 2hr race. Prost having better reliability IMO wasn't all down...

Re: Rank the 3 time WDCs

I mean Mercedes did try to sign a 16yr old Verstappen, with no F1 experience and little formula experience.

I highly doubt, at that point, Verstappen never signed to avoid Hamilton. At that point in time he was an exciting prospect driver, nothing more.

Verstappen currently lacks a head to head with a WDC/GOAT/top-rated teammate. Until he's been tested in that aspect, then i put him firmly behind Senna and Stewart. I'm not sure we can really say that about Stewart, either. He had Graham Hill as a teammate in his first two years, and lost to him bo...

Whilst Russell isn't in the Hamilton/Verstappen tier, his big strength over Hamilton is how switched on he is (arguably one of the weakest attributes Hamilton has, and Russell seems to be one of the better ones on the grid). If he doesn't get second in WDC I agree with the above poster - he won't be in the RB seat next year. Somebody who is a tier 2 driver should be comfortably 2nd in that RB.

Nothing's going right for Checo just now. He looks low in confidence and is being thrashed by Verstappen.

Thing I hate about 5 second penalties are they are not "even". 5 seconds taken in the pit lane, costing track position - is more severe than 5 seconds taken in open air, with no loss of track position. To be fair though, that's true of any other penalty as well. Some drivethroughs result in a loss ...

The fact DRS was needed shows where the failings have been. Making the cars shorter would improve wheel to wheel racing. Re: Rank Hamilton and Verstappen's teammates

I'm still not sure exactly where Russell is as a driver other than he isn't elite.

Last season he carried luck and beat Hamilton, this season he's been unlucky and being beaten. So I reckon he is somewhere in about Rosberg/Button level, possibly a wee half step back from them.
