Re: 2021 Austrian Grand Prix Race Thread

Watching back on the 4 coverage, the 2nd incident (so Perez’s first with Leclerc) seems the worst to me, yet all three incidents get exactly the same penalty. Kimi made quite a few errors, yet gets a penalty for something that both he and Vettel seem to agree was a misunderstanding. For his speeding...

Re: 2021 Austrian Grand Prix - Qualifier of the Day

George. Lando almost did similar a few weeks ago until he lost the lap to track limits. Amazing performance from him but I feel George may have been outperforming his car to a greater extent in this session. Had George got Q3 on the softs I wouldn’t have split them but beating two Ferraris on the sa...

Lando for me also. Had Lando not had the stewards hand 2nd to Bottas I might have voted Max as well, but I feel that Lando deserves more than he ended up with this weekend. Steve Jones certainly seemed to be trying to trip George into saying he’d signed with Mercedes yesterday. Hope he does, especially after...

Bottas handed 2nd in the stewards’ room and no points for Russell again :frown: I am getting fed up of Max dominating every week, at least when Hamilton was winning all the time he had to jump Vettel and Bottas occasionally or fend off Max etc for those wins. Maybe the triple header makes it seem mo...

Ricciardo made up a few more places than Alonso, but he also did that in the 3rd best car on the grid. Alonso finished immediately behind his teammate who started much further up the grid than him. That flatters Alonso a little, as Norris had a good race while Ocon seems to have had a meh race. I’d ...

Re: 2021 Portugal Grand Prix Race Thread

I do wonder if the perception that Perez was left out to dry by the team (which I do agree with) has been what won him DOTD. He clearly managed his tyres well as he usually does but I wouldn’t have called it a DOTD performance. That was Hamilton’s this weekend, although remaining third in the champi...

Re: 2021 Portugal Grand Prix Race Thread

Not a great move by Mercedes there. Perez getting fastest lap wasn’t going to harm them, Bottas stopping gave Max the free stop which now means that Max has 1 point less of a deficit to overhaul than would otherwise have been the case. Mazepin... were the timing screens correct in saying he was a mi...

Whatever they have left out of their allocation of 10, I thought. Teams do carry used sets into Sunday but counting up the sets mentioned, it sounds like they have the same allocation for a weekend but instead the rules are rigid about when they can be used. The only thing I like about it is the onl...

Two sets of tyres for a grand prix? Wasn’t the consensus that everyone managing tyres and one stopping was boring? Re: Silly Season 2022

I do wonder if it’ll end up being Gasly and Russell vying for Ocon’s seat if he is beaten over the season by Alonso. Imola may have Mercedes thinking that Russell isn’t ready for the seat and wanting him placed elsewhere as they did with Ocon when they ruled Russell out of the Merc seat for 2020 and...

He didn’t do anything wrong on Sunday that I saw. With others spinning off, Vettel kept it on the road despite having a reputation for that. Did he get any points along with his stop/go penalty? After 5 in one weekend in a 23 race season he really needs a clean season now. It’s a shame Vettel got a ...

It’s been good to see Lewis encouraging the younger drivers to learn from their mistakes and move on this weekend, but I wonder if things might sour in the future depending on how the season / silly season unfolds. Lando did have a lot of bad luck in one of their seasons, which I thought flattered Sainz in terms of making him look a lot better than Norris. I don’t usually vote for two, but I am today. Fantastic start and a great race by Max. I am glad he won on merit and not with Red Bull throwing Sergio under the bus in the 2 vs 1 fight with Mercedes.

I agree with the official DOTD though. I hope Lando will reach a higher podium step soon.

Tsunoda was closest to getting a vote otherwise, as others have said as impressive as his fightback was, especially for a rookie, he had his finishing position helped by the misfortune of other drivers.

My thinking on Perez was that he will perform at a level that Red Bull will want to keep him, thus getting Mercedes interested as their car advantage is likely to narrow. Perez has been the unluckiest guy of 2020. He's lost at least three podiums to bad luck and Red Bull will probably use Albon's third place as the reason to announce him for 2021. Shame about the lack of prep, with it being Lance’s car instead of Perez’s if a podium was on the cards it would go to the driver who earned it with no chance of team politics.
