Re: A very serious Michael Andretti regarding F1 a big mess
I've been watching Formula 1 for nearly 25 years and I can't remember a year where there was not talk about it being in crisis. Some good points, but I would counter first of all by adding that F1 has become more expensive to participate in. That a backmarker team has a bigger budget, inflation adj...

Great news, and even better that apparently it doesn't come at the cost of Milwaukee, rather they may be be promoting both events together. FYI for Americans on here, you can get a limited edition ticket right now for $100 for a 4 day ticket. IndyCar Series, Pirelli World Challenge, Indy Lights, Pr...

Re: I was googling around and found this...would you agree?
I think the author/s take a blinkered view of Vettel and exaggerate the dominance of his cars in a way that they seem to ignore for Hakkinen, Hill and Villeneuve. I think they are right to consider that Button may have faded into obscurity if not for Brawn. With other rising stars, Button may not ha...

Re: Vintage F1 thread
I'm currently reading Donaldson's book on Fangio and so far it is excellent. I would recommend it to anybody. I have thoroughly enjoyed the accounts of the South American long distance races that make Le Mans, even in the Forties and Fifties, look like a sprint race.

Re: Hamilton's bad luck - a myth?
I often see Hamilton being labelled as a particularly unlucky driver, who has suffered a lot of bad luck throughout this career. The problem with your post is that it's built on this entire posit yet I've never seen anyone in Formula 1 describe Hamilton as being unlucky. If anything, I would say th...

Some great suggestions above. A few more I recall, and I will do my best not to spoil them for anybody who hasn't seen them already. The 1993 Portuguese Grand Prix had some incidents you describe but also some good battles. Performances from 3 or 4 different drivers, different teams too. Hakkinen's ...

Re: Hamilton's bad luck - a myth?
I don't think he has had terrible luck in his career as a whole, but 2012 was a shocker. Botched pitstops when the race was going well, and then when the pitstops were fine the car broke down.

Anyone who's read Coulthard's book would realise that if Hill hadn't been any good then he would never have been in the Williams. Let's not forget that in 1993 Williams was THE team to be in. And a team not afraid to push out its world champions wasn't going to be a finishing school for a driver th...

Re: Alain Prost: the most efficient F1 driver ever?
I just did some maths about 1993. Without reliability and bad luck, Hill was absolutely up there with teammate Prost that season. South Africa: Hill spins off by himself. No points redeemed. Brazil: Prost crashes out by himself. No points redeemed. San Marino: Hill retires from P1 due brake problem...

Although I'm trying to forget about my result now that I've seen it... Look at it this way; if there was ever a round to finish 43rd, this was it. You only lost 46 points to the winner, whereas normally it might be as much as 100 for that place. Very true  Moreover, we are only halfway through...

This is the worst shape I've seen them in. Even the first half of 2009 had a couple of bright spots. This is just awful! You can even go back to the dark days of 1994-1996 and it was never this bad. A gamble? Given the state of the two teams at the time versus radical new rules changes coming, yes it was a gamble. 50/50. Biggest gamble ever? Not even close. I am not against enclosed cockpits if they can come up with a solution that doesn't pose different safety problems such as getting a driver out in fire, or keeping the cockpit cool at the hotter races. I like Grosjean and want him to do well, so for him to throw away a top 5 finish like that was quite annoying. And we would not have heard the end of it for days if Maldonado had done that.
