Re: The Official Sir Lewis Hamilton thread
Hakkinen's damage in terms of his racing ability is unknown and being close to death doesn't mean he wasn't fully recovered as a racing driver - see Massa who insists he was fine afterwards, as does Rob Smedley. But Schumacher's damage from his 2009 accident is known: https://www.thinkspain.com/new...

They went downhill since 2004 onwards. Lots of things and I wouldn't pin on one person. If the buck ultimately stops with the boss then I guess Frank then Claire, but I wouldn't want to point at them because they don't deserve it. That's just sports for you.

Re: Most underrated driver 2000-2020
Hard to choose one. I'll give a list: Rubens: His stock was very high when he signed for Ferrari and I'd even go as far as say he was the Max Verstappen of 1999. Had he not joined Schumacher at Ferrari, his legacy may have been remembered on the level of Montoya, Kimi and Alonso in that era. Montoy...

Unpopular opinion?
Ricciardo isn't funny, if anything he's rather annoying.

Re: Anyone have any radical ideas to fix F1?
My idea for F1 is to be what F1 historically has been - the pursuit of ultimate performance. All the attempts to slow the cars down has meant that technology has outgrown F1 and the sport no longer has that "wow" factor it had when it was at the cutting edge. Formula 1 competition should be made in...

Re: Best F1 driver ever?
It's a common statement that it's next to impossible to compare drivers between generations with any meaningful accuracy but I disagree. Indeed statistics don't tell us much. But what there is, is there are traits and characteristics of all drivers that can be measured on the basis of transferable s...

Thank you for the interest. Yes, the thread did seem to take a different turn there for a while. Right now I'm in a very busy time in my business. Writing a considered and detailed reply is very time consuming and I don't have that luxury right now. If this thread still has signs of life by the time...

Re: Massa on the top 5 drivers he raced against in F1
And in all honesty, I think there is plenty to attack about your post in terms of objectivity. Many of the points you raise in favor of Schumacher are complete intangibles - you think he was capable of an extra level and say Alonso never was, but there's plenty who'd disagree with that, and I'm cer...

Re: Massa on the top 5 drivers he raced against in F1
Regarding the Imola race you mentioned above, isn't that the one that they changed him to a 2 stopper from a 3 stopper, because of a safety car? He did have graining issues indeed, now how much he masked it I do not know, as I have not read that anywhere else. It wouldn't surprise me though, he was...

Re: Massa on the top 5 drivers he raced against in F1
Too many ad-hominem replies. I'm happy to discuss the details with anybody as long as they play the ball rather than the poster. I'm a close study of that season and am confident in my understanding of the dynamics involved. Mainstream F1 media was writing the 2006 title battle completely wrongly (m...

Re: Massa on the top 5 drivers he raced against in F1
The list isn't exhaustive, but all that being said, MS in 2006 was miles ahead as a driver than FA of '10-'13, if the intricacies of those respective seasons were any gauge. I think Massa keeps getting that completely wrong. ... And yet he got beaten by the Fernando Alonso of 2006, so are you sayin...

That link by Abulafia is the same Abulafia who used to post on this forum, he's extremely knowledgeable on technical driving matters, in ways that made my draw drop. Is he still around? About Massa. He often puts Alonso first in interviews but it just doesn't add up. Fuel corrected, that gap between...

Re: Shouldn't telemetry be completely banned at GPs anyway?
It's a natural evolution of the sport that reflects society and human's current rate of development. It's not as big as when the first motor races came in as the next generation of horse racing. I'd say let the tech progress in F1 fly and let it evolve naturally. If it were me, I'd have allowed F1 t...

Well Alonso isn't that bad, he's an A grade driver, but I do agree that he is overrated beyond an A grade driver into the league of Schumacher and Senna, which is laughable that I see it claimed so regularly. Hamilton would beat him 7 seasons out of 10.

2004: this season was really close between Alonso and Trulli. Alonso scored 4 podiums (1x2nd and 3 x 3rds) while Trulli scored two podiums (1x 1st and 1x 3rd). Each scored 8 top six finishes. I count only races 1-15 of the season's 18, until Trulli was fired by Flavio. Trulli scored 3 poles to Alon...

We must also keep in mind that for his last 6 races with Renault, Trulli had fallen out and was politically was ostracised by Flavio, and his rate of points accumulation went off the boil accordingly. Yet he still won the team mate score at the end of their time together.

the 2006 cars were very easy to drive, as were all the V8 cars. It was Glock or Panis who after testing the first V8 car in late 2005 said "a little girl" could drive these cars. Easy to drive cars mean they're harder to extract extra performance from them because it's too easy to find the limit. A...

The fact remains that the pace gap was bigger to Schumacher. Don't forget the tyre war too - at Michelin favoured tracks Michael had to compete with Renault, McLaren, Button and to an extent the BMWs early on, while on Bridgestone tracks Alonso had only Massa to overcome as all the other BS runners were too far away to be a threat to take points off him.
