Re: 2021 Russian Grand Prix Free Practice & Qualifying Thread
Quite ironic a few days after Hamilton's mind games about the emotional difficulty of Verstappen fighting for the championship and he makes another mistake in his title fight here. Should be a fun race to watch, but would expect Hamilton to get Sainz and Russell (not going to want to interfere with...

Re: Uncharacteristic errors from Hamilton and Verstappen
The pit lane bump was a poor error. I wouldn't make too much of the subsequent spin though, he clearly had no tyre temperature because of the extra time spent in the pit lane and then having to let the field through on his outlap. Ultimately though I don't think any of it cost him anything as Merced...

Re: Netflix would consider 'buying' F1 to stream races
Interesting. It does seem like it would make the whole broadcasting structure more efficient by having the same company own and broadcast the footage. Currently Liberty Media own the footage and broadcasters like Sky then have to buy it off them and turn a profit by passing the costs onto consumers....

This far in advance it's difficult to know precisely where and when the rain is going to fall. Despite the rain icon, the chance of rain stated in that graphic is only 38%. It would be great to have something to liven up this terribly uninspired venue, but I'll not be getting my hopes up!

Another highly enjoyable IndyCar race. It should be heresy for me to say this as a European, but I'm starting to prefer IndyCar to F1. I was impressed with how they sorted out the first corner mess in the Portland event. Any driver who cut the first corner, as detected by timing loops in the track, ...

Re: F2/F3 2021
I'm going to make this sound way easier than it is, but it's fundamentally true: we need more F1 teams. Sadly Liberty Media are not going to have any more than the bare minimum number of teams required for a viable series. Every team needs a slice of the TV revenue to survive, which would only decr...

Re: One of these days a pair of title rivals will kill one another
If the budget cap has the desired effect of closing up the field and then this may be the last year we really see this sort of thing. This sort of "you back off or we crash" mentality can only work in a two-horse race for the championship. Piastri and Zhou aren't resorting to this behaviour in F2 be...

Re: Uncharacteristic errors from Hamilton and Verstappen
Verstappen's racing attitude is scary and at times dangerous. He come across like a spoilt Br4t. Hardly surprising when you see how the Red Bull management act. I wonder whether skipping the junior series and going straight into F1 is a factor here. His attitude of expecting everyone to jump out of...

Picking the winner always feels like a bit of a cop-out but Ricciardo probably does deserve it today. I don't think there were any real standout performances from the rest of the field that I would choose instead.

Copying in what I wrote on the race thread... Both drivers are playing the "you back off or we crash" game every time they encounter each other on track. At least Lewis has exercised some judgement and backed down a few times this year, Max has not done so once. Something needs to be done to clamp d...

I almost wonder if, given Lewis ended up with a Red Bull resting on his head, both drivers will receive a penalty for not backing out when the other didn't. Both could have given more space and avoided that collision. Sure, Max should have bailed across the runoff. And Lewis, on cold tyres, probabl...

Filled it in. The list of ideas for "improving the show" was mostly horrendous.
Not sure how much attention is going to be paid to the additional comments box at the end, but I used it to have a moan about the sport's unhealthy obsession with aerodynamics.

Re: Ideas on how to avoid a repeat of Spa 2021?
Sunday's debacle did get me wondering why this has never happened before (at least to my knowledge). I mean we've had a number of red flags and curtailed races due to torrential downpours but I'm not aware of any instance in the 71 years of F1 where no racing laps could be completed at all. People w...

This is where Michael Masi earns his money. The drivers make it clear that they don't want to race, but the pertinent question is whether they can race. Hamilton looked to be very fast in Sector 1 in qualifying, often losing time through Sector 2. Might suggest he's set up for more straight line speed, which could make this start very interesting.

I'm expecting contact the next time they encounter each other on track. Max needs to be wary, Hamilton was quite willing to race in this manner with Rosberg and he was remarkably good at it.
