I'm not convinced there is any strategy beyond being lucky enough to have your pitstop match up with the timing of the cautions. The whole race seemed a complete lottery. They may as well pick a starting order out of a hat and then have a 30 lap sprint race because that was the only bit that matter...

Nope - its the track design's fault for having such a runoff area, riders are not to blame if the make a mistake there and they keep going wihout any consequence (same as F1) - blame the track design for allowing that. I don't agree. The track is designed to let riders make a mistake and not suffer...
