Re: Will the FIA step up. A possible championship permintation.
The trickier scenario is if Perez takes Hamilton out or if Bottas collided with Verstappen. The FIA couldn't really punish one driver for the actions of their teammate could they? If it was a really Schumacher at Jerez level of obvious there would probably be something done to avoid the drivers titl...

Re: Verstappen's driving in Saudi GP (split from Official Max Verstappen thread)
That makes Hamilton’s life very easy and Verstappen’s life very difficult. It was the same story in Brazil, where Hamilton performed 20 highway overtakes, as none of his passes (apart from perhaps the one on Norris) took any real skill. Verstappen is in a very different situation. With a weaker eng...

Re: Who did you want to be WDC /who do you now want to be WDC
I wanted Hamilton to the eighth and I would still love for him to do so. I detest Red Bull, Horne and Jos 'loving through his son' Verstappen. I wouldn't begrudge Max the title though as he has (recent controversy notwithstanding) had an absolutely stellar season in terms of pace and consistency. He...

Re: Leclerc vs Sainz
Sainz has done a lot better relative to Leclerc than I thought he would. I still think Leclerc has a much higher ceiling and I maintain that he belongs in the conversation of quickest driver in the grid. He has made a few too many errors this year admittedly. If Ferrari deliver a competitive package...

Re: 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Race Thread
The rule on giving back a place needs to be that you have to drop back a few seconds after doing so. As it stands, If a driver doesn't give the place back then it's a five second penalty. Yet if a driver does give the place back and yields position just before a DRS zone then their punishment is bas...

Welcome back Alex! I will be very interested to see if he can dominate latifi. I rate alex more than most. Think he has very goid race craft and is quite exciting to watch. Now that he no longer has to worry about Redbull politics I reckon he will be able to show his skill at Williams. Russell does...

Guanyu Zhou supposedly has big sponsorship money behind him to try and get that second Alfa seat, but maybe they retain Giovanazzi for one more year before giving the seat to Théo Pourchaire. Giovanazzi hasn't exactly blown Kimi away in their time as teammates so I'm not sure Ferrari will see him as...

A complete no brainer for Alfa. The best replacement for Raikkonen they could have realistically got. Whether or not it's a good move for Bottas remains to be seen.

Re: Hamilton vs. Russell Predictions
Some have mooted a teacher/student relationship for Hamilton/Russell but those rarely work out. If Russell is an elite level driver he'll cause Hamilton some headaches early on. If he is wholly outclassed by Hamilton on pure pace then it's hard to see how that gap gets bridged in a few seasons.

Interesting that Red Bull are still sounding like they have options with Alex in future. They control four seats in Formula One but haven't put him in one of their cars.
I suspect that he may return to Torro Rosso once Gasly leaves.

Formula One grand prix winners is probably too broad a category for pointless, but there is so much trivia scope there. People often forget about the Indy 500 also having Formula One grand prix status from 1950 to 1960. So guys like Rodger Ward are technically F1 race winners.

Re: F1's Golden years
I can't look beyond the 2000's personally. 2000 itself was a heck of a title fight as Hakkinen's last stand attempt to defend his title fell short. 2003 was a genuine three way title fight for much of it between Schumi, Kimi and Montoya. It's the second half of the decade that really sets it apart t...

Re: How Kimi compares in hindsight (split from Red Bull vs Mercedes)
It's extremely difficult to judge and all we really have is a lot of A-B-C. Judging how good young Kimi was may somewhat depend on how good Coulthard was in this era. Hakkinen was generally very comfortably gapping DC in Mclarens title contending years of 1998-2000 before he appeared to fairly sudde...

It would be novel if "significant new evidence" actually means that for once, and it isn't just Nico Hulkenberg driving 70 laps in a 2019 Racing Point and then producing a litre of fuel.

Re: Could Hamilton have won the race with this tactic?
To put it into perspective, it's got to be possible to walk a couple of laps of that track in 2 hours. For a formula one car to take 2 hours to get to the end of the pitlane, it would have to be stationary for much of that.

Re: Could Hamilton have won the race with this tactic?
If Bottas had somehow been able to get to that restart to start last on the grid, I guess he could in theory have taken a fair old chunk of time to pass the pit exit, 30 seconds or so say. It would have been sketchy but less so than Hamilton going at a snails pace for 2 hours. Edit:IDFD beat me to it.

I'd actually say Alonso and Hamilton's battle at Mexico 2018 had more questionable moments than that one as great a spectacle as it was. These things are always more heated on team radio. Grosjean used to moan on the radio almost every time he got overtaken it seemed.

While Toto will be secretly very happy about the net result, that incident makes it less likely, not more likely that Bottas will stay at Mercedes. Hypothetical scenario here. Has to be Bottas. The precision with which he managed to hit Norris to then hit Verstappen was the kind of shot that Ronnie O'Sullivan would tip his hat to.
