Re: The best season performance from any driver

And yet Senna still managed 5 wins that year to finish 2nd in the championship in what was clearly the 2nd, & even sometimes the 3rd best car on the grid. His season that year simply dwarfs anything Verstappen achieved this year. That is why I separated seasons by different levels of car competitiv...

You can scoff all you want, the RB19 is the most dominant anything in the history of F1. Verstappen might as well have been running a Group 20 Slot Car vs a Field of Group 12 Slot Cars. I would like to see some actual data from you to support this claim instead of just emotional arguments. What is ...

To talk up Verstappens would be my guess. The reason why I scoff at the notion that the RB19 has a bigger advantage than Mercedes cars of the past did is not because I feel some urge to talk up Verstappen, but because it’s not true. It really is that simple, none of the numbers support this opinion...

Re: The best season performance from any driver

The car was a beast in Max's hands. He was relentless in pursuit of dominance from start to finish. He didn't need to lead every lap, even the first lap. Whether he was starting P1, P2, P3, his starts were all amazing. I can't recall him having a bad start this season. He didn't even need to, but i...

Re: The best season performance from any driver

The last thing is exactly what RB could do this season - run more downforce and still be quicker on the straights, especially with their super-DRS. And no, the DRS advantage did not disappear as was clearly visible. A bit reduced maybe, disappear no. The few times we’ve seen Red Bull battle with Fe...

The fact that Perez, despite being "broken" by Verstappen as you call it, secured second with a race to go and with > 50 points advantage at the end of the season clearly demonstrates the ludicrous and unique dominance that the RB 19 enjoyed The reason why Perez was able to secure P2 in the standin...

At this stage there’s little left to learn about Bottas. He’s gone up against both Hamilton and Massa in his career (two very well established benchmarks, we know exactly how good both are) and we know how he fared against both. At this point in his career, Bottas won’t do anything positive or negat...

Re: The best season performance from any driver

Verstappen is far from the first driver who has driven the clear best car with a relatively average teammate and probably won’t be the last. What makes him stand out clearly above Hamilton and Vettel in the modern era, is his near total refusal to drop any winnable races. Australia - a standing star...

Re: The best season performance from any driver

 Best seasons with dominant cars IMO would be, for instance: Lauda/Prost in 1984 Prost/Senna in 1988/89 Rosberg/Hamilton They had to fight for it and couldn't just cruise to the title. For me as a racing fan, that counts more than scoring season records without competition. So if Verstappen dr...

The best season performance from any driver

Max Verstappen’s 2023 seems to be universally acknowledged as the best season by any driver ever among younger fans, and it’s easy to see why, as he has annihilated virtually every single season record ever. That said, I still find it hard to compare seasons where drivers have a dominant car (and th...

I suspect that Ferrari will be quick at Abu Dhabi, they have strong mechanical grip and great top speed. Their biggest weakness is fast corners, which Abu Dhabi doesn’t have a lot of (even with the 2021 modifications). McLaren is the opposite of Ferrari, terrific in high speed corners but average me...

3. Vettel had more reliability failures than Hamilton

Re: Alain Prost, and the historical effect of weight in F1

In all likelihood, Vettel was a better driver than Prost in absolute terms. Vettel was almost never 1 second slower than a teammate in a normal qualifying session, whereas for Prost this was a common occurrence (especially against Senna). That is my underlying point. The thing no to lose sight of w...

Re: Alain Prost, and the historical effect of weight in F1

I am very confident that if you teleported Vettel to 1987, he would be exposed by the top drivers back then. And not only by Senna and Prost. Do you think that Senna would be 1 second per lap faster than Vettel on average? Because that is the kind of gap he would need to be worse than Prost. And if...

Senna had a huge pace gap to Prost. Senna had a huge pace gap to everyone. Would that be repeated now? Probably not. The margins have tightened up. Prost had a far better career overall than Vettel. He went against stronger drivers and generally did better against them than Vettel did. I agree that...

Prost was well outpaced by Senna, possibly the fastest driver of all time, but that is about it in terms of drivers being better than him in the same team. We have already gone over the weight advantage. That argument is pointless to reh...

If Max had a Union Jack on his passport, all these so-called Red Bull controversies in the last few years would have been brushed under the rug as effortlessly as liegate or the illegal tyre test were by the media. ;)

Thanks for the information but criminal law is not what applies to F1 racing. Re: Who do you rank at the bottom of the list of F1 WDCs?

There’s two ways of looking at this:

1. How good were they overall as drivers

2. How impressive was their world title

Rosberg Senior ranks near the bottom for (2) but is above most one-time champions for (1).

Verstappen - Perez - Ocon - Alonso

Verstappen - Perez - Stroll - Alonso

Verstappen - Gasly - Ocon - Alonso

I remember BMW Williams being very competitive early on in 2005, with podiums in Malaysia, Europe and Monaco as well as a pole position for Heidfeld (when Webber was actually on fuel corrected pole). Then they basically fell back into the lower midfield after Canada.
