Re: Damon Hill - Better than his reputation?
Disregarding 1999 on the basis that Hill wasn't at his best yet counting 1994 against a 41 year old Nigel Mansell who had just come out of retirement and barely fit in the car seems a little like clutching at straws to me. The only real fair comparisons here are vs Coulthard and Villeneuve, both of...

Re: Damon Hill - Better than his reputation?
I think had Damon started in F1 in his early 20s, instead of spending so much time racing bikes, his career would have been remembered very differently. His championship season was pretty decent anyway. Never qualified off the front row. Team errors and tech issues cost him wins in Monaco, Spa and ...

Re: Damon Hill - Better than his reputation?
Hill was good enough for two titles, which in my estimation he indeed won. Would he have been stronger in 1995, had the FIA acted in a way that honoured the rules that governed F1? I believe only Hill himself could have answered that question in 1995, and I can't help wondering what he thinks about...

Re: Damon Hill - Better than his reputation?
Damon wasn't horrible but I have the feeling that some of the number 2 drivers to seasoned champions like Schumacher could've done better than Hill if they ever ended in the position he was in after Senna's death. Barrichello, Fisichella and Webber would've easily achieved more with that Williams. D...

Re: EU investigation into F1
This will become a big mess... Most (all?) of the teams are based in the UK and, with Brexit, I'm not sure the EU will be able to do anything. I also disagree that the small teams are of little importance... The grid fillers are vital to F1 as they make the bulk of the grid. F1 is not DTM where each...

Re: Driver's careers ended/damaged by other, better drivers
Absolutely. People have short memories if they don't recall that before 2014, everyone was talking about the 'Big 4' of F1: Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel and Raikkonen. Kimi was widely expected to provide a stiff challenge to Alonso, and many people even tapped him to come out on top. Fast forward to 20...

Re: Ferrari letter prompts F1 Suspension row
Haven't seen that before. That's much more dramatic than I expected, maybe teams have been taking advantage of everyone being focused on the front wing flexing and have found a much more efficient way to do it in the rear. As for Ferrari's protest and the TD it is true that without a doubt the syst...

You are quite correct that teams supplying differing equipment usually does not make a big difference. In my explantory vol I devote some pages to this, with examples. Pleased to see you recognise how well Benetton and Schumacher did in 1992. I think the media were all about Mansell/Willi...

Re: Another bull in waiting: Door could re-open for Lamborgh
To be fair, the leaf spring in the 'Vette is transverse and had been for a while. Yeah IIRC it's just a running joke, it's actually a bespoke design introduced with the C4 that GM insists to be the best thing ever but in general is neither better nor worse than coil springs. It ends up being a crap...

Re: A possible revival for BMW with McLaren
I don't think anyone wants into F1 right now... BMW has stated multiple times that they're interested in Formula E and weren't even considering endurance racing with LMP1 prototypes. The Honda story will make manufacturers think twice about entering. The original McLaren F1 road car did have a BMW e...

You are looking at package results only. My separating driver and car gives another view. In 2002 the Ferrari was the fastest car and Michael still faster than th...

It was unsporting but in the end it was such a feeble attempt by Hamilton that perhaps it shouldn't have been attempted. With Hamilton being Hamilton, I have no doubt he would've gone to extreme levels to beat his opponent, and it's a good thing he wasn't in a position to do more damage than he was ...

Re: Potential disciplinary action against Hamilton by Merced
The interesting thing in it all is that if Hamilton was going so snail pace slow, why didn't Rosberg pounce and stick it to Lewis, leaving him finishing second and punctuating his championship? Because if Hamilton was capable of that, then why wouldn't he try to pull a Schumacher on Rosberg as a la...

It's impossible not to chuckle at the absolute mayhem Nico's victory has caused in the BBC F1 crew. LOL this is free ad to Codemasters. I mean, you can buy a PS4, their game and learn to drive as Hamilton in it...
He does have a point, though. The basics can be learned in a video game. But, never having driven anything on a real track, I'd expect there's stuff you can only learn in the flesh.

Re: Alonso is considering quitting F1 - Where would he go?
I really don't know. I'd like to see him in the WEC but only in a good trio, even then his talent would be diluted. Indy 500 would be cool, though.
If Alonso had a cooler head he would've been one of the greatest champions in F1 history... But it wasn't meant to be.

Well that's a different concept again. Going back to this 1400hp figure that Berger mentions, this I believe was only managed in qualifying when special qualifying engines were used. For the race these engines had to be greatly reduced in power for the fuel they had to use and for reliability and h...

They need to make F1 less "politically correct" (not make it bigoted but less greenhouse-ish). Right now, a slight rub in your opponent's car, 10 place grid penalty. Need to replace engine/transmission? 5, 10, even 20 place grid penalty. Drivers are PR bots. The current best drivers (Vettel, Hamilto...

Evaluating Schumi's legacy
I feel very uncertain when someone speaks of Schumacher. I have a great deal of respect for him and his unquestionable talent. IMO he really is the best F1 driver ever and would've beaten Senna had the Brazilian survived the Imola GP in 1994. Of course, Benetton were blatant cheaters that season but...

Any Irish prospect who wants to make it big needs to move to England, but it's much easier for them than for others because England is right around the corner for them. Native motorsport in the Republic of Ireland is very limited because of very few large tracks and competition.

I love F1 since I was a kid but now it sucks. It's become too "politically correct" (not in the anti-bigot way but other meaning).
