Re: [Merged] Mercedes v Ferrari v Red Bull - 2018 edition
Not pitting Bottas wasn't really a gaffe, he had no fresh soft tyres, so he would have been on mediums behind Vettel on softs. Which would still have seen him easily end up second (or third, conceding a place to Hamilton), so yes it was a gaffe. Mercedes would have at least gotten P2-P3 out of pitt...

Re: The F1 eSports Thread (2018)
My main gripe with this is the use of the Codemasters F1 game. I get that it's probably a promotional and licensing thing, but I would expect an official series to offer a level of realism and simulation that is substantially higher than the game offers. There are a few high-profile sims that would ...

Thanks for correcting me, mds. Good stats. I think what I was really thinking was the hard compound (and super hard, as you explained) seemed unnecessary compounds. The insurance point makes sense though. Yes no doubt the hard tyre is of very limited use and we won't see the superhard at ...

Where is he ranked then? Probably in the middle third 8-15 based on current ability. Hence him being average among his peers. I would rate him 8-14th, based on fairly broad groupings: Group 1 -- Definitely better than Kimi (as of 2018) : Hamilton, Alonso, Vettel, Verstappen, Ricciardo Group 2 -- Ve...

Silverstone was a similar story, only in reverse: Hamilton took pole by a very slight margin - clearly either car could have had pole - and then fell behind at the start, after which a proper comparison was difficult because he got spun. He didn't seem any faster than the Ferraris in the late stage...

Re: Hard, Medium and Soft...
Interesting  what's the point of the super hard? I imagine it won't be used all year. It will almost certainly not be used. Pirelli had this to say about the super hard: "Quite simply, it's our insurance," Pirelli boss Mario Isola told Speed Week. "Basically, we assume we will never use th...

Re: Hard, Medium and Soft...
The hardest so rarely gets used it's just another bit of useless information to throw at the audience, only to remind them that in all likelihood it won't be used during qualifying or the race. This is not really true. It provides more options for strategy for one. And secondly, the hardest isn't r...

Re: Hard, Medium and Soft...
It's a good idea and I've been in favor of this for a long time. It will remove confusion for the casual viewers, with regarding things like: - the soft compound is the hardest available this weekend (=> casual viewer: "whaaaa?") - driver A is running the ultrasoft tyre. His next stint will have to ...

Re: 2018 British Grand Prix Race Thread
I'm hoping Mercs actions will help tame the Ferraris next race. Otherwise, if it happens again, there will be even more of an outrage and rightly so. Mercs "actions" will do nothing in preventing this to happen again. I don't know what's hard here to understand but once again, the risk-reward for t...

This is not about what has ever happened in a fist corner in F1, rather than what has been happening lately. Why are people so surprised that Merc are voicing their concerns? Because 2 isolated events, one of which disadvantaged Vettel himself, do not form some kind of "trend" that should be labele...

Well, in Silverstone Hamilton actually was the victim - no matter how the Vettel-Räikkönen brigade tries to spin it. Same story with midseason tyre changes: when they suit Vettel, they are fine (2013), when they do not suit him, they are unfair. 8) The tyre changes in 2013 were not fine becau...

Well, it was the same for everyone, wasn't it? I already explained that there were other reasons for the tyre failures - but of course they were politically downplayed by Red Bull and some others who hoped for an advantage. The tyres were a lottery, they were comically soft, and the fact that there...

But yes, exactly, Red Bull lobbyied hard throughout the season to get the tyres suiting them. Hembery's pre-Silverstone quote underlines this. And it came as predicted - in the second half of the season the winner was known even before the weekend started ... Yes, but I also went over some extra ar...

Although they are much closer in performance compared to last year, it's funny that it seems the tables have turned in that Ferrari may have an advantage on the straights while Mercedes are stronger on the twisty parts. Isn't it so that Ferrari are better in low-speed cornering and traction out of ...

Gaining positions is a bad indicator of how good a start actually was. Sometimes getting a good start actually makes you lose positions because you get blocked in and have to brake - like Vettel in France for example. True, but I hadn't taken the last 3 races into account and I think France was pre...

Risking taking yourself out isn't enough of a deterrent and it's not relevant in a situation where you're not directly taking out your WDC opponent, but your teammate is. I think the fact that it's a championship contender being taken out by their direct rivals should be taken into account when determining the penalty. 10 seconds is a joke imo, that kind of penalty won't prevent it from happening again. The penalty is meaningless - whether it's 5, 10 or 30 seconds. ...

I think Ocon is just continuing on the path that was already apparent last year. I jest, but in all seriousness we have seen more serious instances of deliberate collisions in F1 with far more lenient penalties dished out. Or even no penalty at all.
