Re: 2017 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Race Thread
By the way who the f*ck decided that putting the 2nd DRS detection point in the middle of an overtaking zone was a good move? There were a few instances where one driver (the best example was Wehrlein vs Magnussen) where one driver pulls off a ballsy move into the chicane at the end of the first str...

Ben Edwards is hopeless. Crofty, Brundle and Coulthard would all work fine in the box together. Very different opinions here! :-P Crofty is terrible in practice sessions and just talks about what he ate the night before and when Kravitz joins in everything gets worse. Crofty to me just doesn't soun...

They're about where they should be, their resources aren't huge, they're up against teams who have been in the sport for a good while like Sauber, Force India and Toro Rosso, or who are big names historically in the sport (McLaren and Williams) who will find it easier to attract drivers and personne...

The last few laps were impressive by Bottas and showed how much exactly he was holding back for most of the race. Hopefully he can carry this form into the next season. I honestly thought the last few laps were just Hamilton backing off. Did Bottas actually up his pace from before? He was setting f...

Get rid of the gimmicks introduced supposedly for the fans . Bring back the beast engines without fuel consumption rate or RPM limit requirements. For fans more interested in fuel saving than racing there is Formula E now for you . Return Formula 1 back to what was it was created to be in the begin...

What was pleasing was that on good circuits that promote racing, the fears about this season's cars proved to be unfounded.
The racing on circuits like Sochi and Abu Dhabi was terrible and the sooner they get booted from the calendar the better.

I think all we can really say is that Verstappen was the better qualifier over the course of this season. There's just too few opportunities to really compare the two in races, and so many times where one or the other went out too early in the race to say how it would have ended. Ricciardo definite...

Ricciardo over the course of the season had more reliably issues so I'm curious as to what the excuse is for why Ricciardo finished with more points.

Hamilton can win tomorrow in a straight fight. Is it a one or two stopper? I hope Mercedes let them run different strategies. Even if they run the same strategy, I would not rule out Hamilton overtaking Bottas on track. Bottas always struggles on the other tyre, like Nico used to in 2014. Especiall...

Vettel was also only changed due to starting at the back I thought he had a genuine failure in Malaysia or Japan that meant he had to change engine? Even more impressive then if so, you can see why Horner isn’t happy about the engine limit going down to 3 next year. I think the 5th engine they took...

Well, Verstappen is out of the equation as he has extended his contract already (until the end of 2020 if memory serves). edit: I said Ocon because he seemed like the most logical, as a member of the Mercedes development programme :) Yes you are right Max did sign. I like Valtteri and think he is a decent driver, but I don't know why Mercedes didn't use this year to pound up a hotshot rookie for 2018. They need a driver who can learn from Lewis and be ready to help out when Lewis's numbers begin to taper off. Which hotshot rookie would that be? The one Merced...

Two races to go, and IMO the real battle is now between Bottas and Vettel. Bottas has closed the gap to second place to just 15 points. The conversation in here seems to be totally missing the point (with the exception of mikeyg123). Whether or not the overtake was illegal is irrelevant. What's relevant is that getting a 25 second penalty for it and giving positions to multiple drivers who were not involved in the overtake is somet...

He'll replace Bottas in 2019 if he continues his improvement in 2018. I don't think it's a coincidence that he has the measure of Perez now we're returning to tracks he's raced in last year. His drive in Brazil last year is also very under-appreciated, he had a Manor in a position it had no right be...
