Re: Anyone have any radical ideas to fix F1?

And unless you're a manufacturer, you're just not going to win, which means winners come from an ever-dwindling pool. There have always been different levels in F1 but to the best of my recollection never have there been so few different winners across such an extended period as there have been in ...

Re: Anyone have any radical ideas to fix F1?

The idea is not if they could do it or not. The argument is that drivers made mistakes back in the day of the sticks; and these were drivers that were used to them. These mistakes can spice up the race. Although it is a step backwards after 25 or so years to go back to the sticks, more of a leap ba...

Manual gearboxes with conventional 3 pedal control. That would sort the men from the boys. It really wouldn't. The Sky team talked about this during the past GP weekend, and Anthony Davidson was dead on when he said that it's just another skill every driver will learn. There's nothing inherently di...

Article on Sky by Brundle makes some depressing reading. The tyre issue is a bit of a scapegoat here IMO. Tyres have always been degrading and sensitive - just the awareness (and sensor technology to understand and measure it) was lacking. Thermal and circuit-specific sensitive tyres? Take the Michelins 1978-1980 or 2004 as striking examples. Or the Engl...

Re: Mercedes 2019 vs Mercedes 2014-2016

2014-2016 was the most dominant series of cars in F1 history in terms of raw pace. No team has been that far ahead for that number of races and we may never see that again. This current version of Mercedes dominance isn't built on a pace advantage, rather it is more akin to Red Bull 10-13. The best...

Re: Mercedes 2019 vs Mercedes 2014-2016

I think people's memories are fading somewhat. In terms of results, the only difference to 2014 has been a hairline split in a rubber tube on a spark plug and I don't think we may draw any inferences about how (not) well-oiled the Mercedes machine was then compared to today from that. 2015 was down ...

DRS: I'd like to see DRS use allowed for, lets say, 5 or 6 minutes per race, to be used in any way the driver feels at any part of the circuit. The thing is with stuff like this is that, as Fiki said, it'd cost zilch to implement & could be put in tomorrow. Surely it'd be worth a trial somehow to t...

Interesting article on Racefans today. This attempt to rewrite history and give Baku to Leclerc is absurd. He crashed out in qualifying, and his race pace was no better than Gasly on the same strategy. Why do we assume that Leclerc could have taken it to the Mercedes? Because he looked good in practice? Mercedes are known for relentless...

I know this thread is tongue in cheek but some of the ideas basically vindicate the FIA's position that the show is more important than the sport and it makes for depressing reading. This is what brought us cheese tyres and DRS, for example. F1 doesn't need gimmicks. It needs a bit more ambition ap...
