Re: Canada 2019: Vettel Penalty Uberthread (merged)
I do think that there is something in this crowding off the track thing. But it never, ever usually gets penalised. It usually doesn't even get thought of as a possible penalty. Look at this from Hungary 2017 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU72heP0uH0&t=22s Bottas completely crowds Verstappen of...

Re: Anyone have any radical ideas to fix F1?
Bring back Gravel Traps and get rid of excessive run-off areas. Watch how quickly drivers tidy up their lines and most mistakes result in loss of position rather than maintaining position thanks to the ability to maintain speed when you veer off the track. With Gravel traps, drivers would have to l...

Re: Mario Andretti on the Vettel penalty:
To a certain extent, consistency is what we make of it. As I recall, when Andrew Scott-Gilbert was a very conscientious permanent steward, there were a great number of race fans getting upset at seeing the rules applied so rigidly. I always read his reports with great interest. Excuse my ignorance ...

Re: Mario Andretti on the Vettel penalty:
I think Andretti is mainly making a point that rules can get in the way of the sport being good to watch. Penalties decided after the race has finished for instance. Its not good to wake up the following day and find that yesterday's podium has been changed. Ideally, you want errors to be punished s...

Re: Anyone have any radical ideas to fix F1?
Are batteries good for the environment? Is Formula E going to run for 2 hours on the original batteries? I agree that the capability is there to make cars that are too fast for the current circuits and generate too high G forces for the driver to cope with. Formula 1 became a success because it came...

Re: Anyone have any radical ideas to fix F1?
A few simple rules set by the FIA should suffice. The FIA also have to make the final decision on what is meeting the rules. eg. All cars shall have a single flat single plane bottom surface extending to within 5cm of the outer limits of the car bodywork viewed in plan view. Engines will be normally...

Re: RIP F1 Triple World Champion Niki Lauda Dies Aged 70
Niki was a great driver, but even stronger as a person. He could build up a team around himself, and that was another part of why he was Champion 3 times. In those days F1 was full of characters and Niki was one of the best examples.

Re: Anyone have any radical ideas to fix F1?
My idea for F1 is to be what F1 historically has been - the pursuit of ultimate performance. All the attempts to slow the cars down has meant that technology has outgrown F1 and the sport no longer has that "wow" factor it had when it was at the cutting edge. Formula 1 competition should be made in...

The main problem with your F1 utopia will always be Ferrari. The main problem with F1 (and sadly, just the main, not the only one), is the cars. Too big, fitted with useless and futureless PU, wrongly sophisticated, and remote controlled (through the remote controlled drivers, nowadays). As someone...

Some great ideas on this thread. But for me, it needs fixed NOW! Not waiting for 2021 or whatever. Fix it now. FIA and Liberty need a backbone. Give the manufacturers no say in the rules. Bottas took the fastest lap on the 2nd to last lap, he set it as he was being put under big pressure from Hamilton. This was the lap Hamilton got closest. It's to do with what goes on in Hamilton and Bottas' heads. Hamilton had fastest lap in Bacu and if Leclerc had screwed up his final lap, then Hamilton would have drawn level in the World Championship. But then Hamilton screwed up and ran wide, taking the pressure off Bottas. Bottas would have known...

Bottas' lap wasn't that great. He didn't nail it in Q3 which shows the advantage he had here, as he was still able to claim pole anyway. It depends on Bottas' attitude. If he ever wants to win the World Championship, then this year is his best chance and to do that he has to beat Hamilton. He is in the team that has dominated F1 for several years and he is currently leading the World Championship. Bottas not only has to get under Ham...

Re: How strong do you suspect the current new wave in F1 is?
I think generally the 'elite' drivers are not that special, because the cars are the dominant factor in F1. Often we see the cars qualifying very adjacent to each other on the grid. You can have Ricciardo beating Vessel and then struggling to get a competitive car, because there are not enough compe...

Specify that the bottom surface of the car must be a single flat plane - that would prevent them from generating a lot of downforce. This is a bad idea, even within the scope of what you're trying to achieve. Underfloor downforce is by far the least affected by the wake of a car in front, and is a ...

The poor quality of racing stems from the design of the cars and sometimes, the design of the circuit. Both of those things could be fixed if there was the will to do it.

I'm a bit surprised that Mercedes are that far ahead.
