Re: A fight between top driver and non top driver

For some reason, the first example that popped in to my head was de la Rosa Vs. Schumacher, at the chaotic 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix. Schumacher was having a bad day and a charging Pedro, at the wheel of a McLaren, came up behind and took a few laps to pass for a combination of reasons; it was too w...

Re: Your top 10 of non-race winners in F1

Martin Brundle is always the man who springs to mind; very quick indeed. The man who pushed Senna to the wire in their pre-F1 days. I'll give a shout to de la Rosa too. Always horrendous bad luck, especially in his comeback 2010 season when he was easily as quick as Kobayashi (quicker in qualifying,...

Martin Brundle - he had some stronger midfield cars but that was as good as it got.

Perhaps the pre-crash Olivier Panis.

Robert Kubica?

Re: Mark Webber's Last Week

Yeah, I've been a fan of Mark Webber since that famous debut race in 2002. In his Jaguar days I would cheer as he qualified high up the grid and bite my nails as he fell down the order on race day. At Williams and during his early Red Bull years I would moan constantly; When will this guy get a car ...

Rubens was still driving well on his retirement. After leaving Brawn, where he proved he was still capable of world-class performances, he had a superb year at Williams, performing consistantly well and pounding new guy, Hulkenberg. He followed that up next year by outclassing Maldonado too, but the...

As for their time together at RBR, David comfortably had the measure of Mark in 2007, and even in a disastrous final season the Scot managed something the ever-dependable Aussie never did - another podium for Red Bull. Really? Mark's average qualifying position over the 2007 season was 9th, whereas...

Re: Could Mercedes Challenge For the Championship?

As long as red bull keep suppressing Webber, Mercedes will have an advantage in their two good drivers. 1986 and 2007 would suggest that the opposite is true. The teams with the two drivers snapping at each others heels took points off one another and the team with the single challenger sneaked pas...

Of course I cheered when he retired. He's the greatest opponent of Webber, Alonso and Rosberg, the three drivers I support. Were Alonso to have retired from the lead, I would fully expect and accept cheering from the Vettel crowd - it's a rivalry, that's what it's all about. I see it as all good fun...

He turns 90 in a few months, is it really a tragedy or that sad if somebody in their 90th year gets cancer? You're really asking whether getting cancer isn't sad, just because of someone's age? Age is irrelevant - he's someone's father, grandfather. He's fighting fit and deserves to be here as much...

I think it's a little strong to suggest that Villeneuve's desire to beat Pironi led to his demise. As I said in an earlier thread, I thought Rosberg was great to watch today - always lurking in the background, and in many ways reminded me of some of the races Keke used to have! He has that raw speed as many (but not all) had suspected.

I sincerely hope he continues this form throughout the season.

Centauri: my 2012 rating for De la Rosa results from my calculations. Is this so slow compared with Vettel, assuming same cars? Other examples may place PdlR's 2012 performance/rating in perspective: Graham Hill best-rated at 100.5, which means about 30-40 secs behind a top-rater in a race. Exactly...

My rating stats are for drivers alone, car-neutral. So if de la Rosa was in the Red Bull, he'd be 1.2% slower than Vettel. That is about 1.2 secs per lap which translates to about 72 secs behind in a 60 lap race, which could be about one lap on some circuits. I don't consider this slow; PdlR is a v...

It's never that simple to assess drivers who have never had competitive machinery, but that fact that he was destroyed in qualifying and the majority of races by the 41-year old de la Rosa is rather telling. de la Rosa himself was beaten fairly soundly by Raikkonen when he was called up to drive the...

I don't think masses of credit can be attributed to Coulthard, but he certainly helped lay the foundations. If he'd stayed on another one or two years it wouldn't have made much difference as Toby said above - the big winner would have been Webber, but it wasn't to be.
