Re: Underdog winners
How about Rubens getting over the line in Valencia 2009? Great story. Also not a win, but Michael's pole in Monaco 2012 was somewhat out of nowhere and a great moment. In fact it is probably my favourite F1 moment, but I'm a bit biased on that one. Agreed,so unfortunate that MSC could not have turn...

2012 was indeed strange. The Alonso/Ferrrari on season-average was very little slower than the top two packages. But these were exceptional packages that only needed a slight speed advantage: the Hamilton/McLaren and the Vettel Red Bull. They made the Alonso/Ferrari's results and comparative speed s...

Can't quite work out why I'm reminded of a time years ago, when a a group of us as teenagers played Scalextric racing. We had all kinds of cars, Lotus, Cooper, Vanwall, BRM, Porsche, etc. One day a classmate asked to come and race. He was a Clark/Lotus fan. Two of our guys with their sharknose Ferra...

Prost benefitted tremendously from Lauda's info and approach in 1984; Senna benefitted hugely from Prost's sharing info in 1988. I'm surprised Lewis is not confident enough to share his data. Imo he should be. Another driver can rarely copy another's drivingr precisely, all have differing styles, st...

Done the 70s only: 1971: Gethin/BRM was 14th fastest package of the season. 1972: Beltiose/BRM was 10th fastest. 1976: Watson/Penske was 11th 1977: Jones/Shadow was 5th, the Shadow being ...

Re: Lewis doesn't want to share data with Bottas
As responses above here say: data should/must be shared for the benefit of the team. Hamilton benefitted from seeing Alonso's data in 2007, Rosberg from Michael's 2010-2012, Lewis and Nico from each other in 2013-2016. Lewis should be confident in his own driving ability to share data. If he then be...

Hamilton, and every driver in Formula One is part of a team. Leading up to the race itself, the TEAM work in unison to tune the car and maximize it's performance. For a driver, it is understandable they are selfish and want to win. I fully support that mental position ... for the race. For the team...

Re: Underdog winners
Good candidates from all above here. As Lotus49 says, it is a tricky business identifying them. I have afew who should not be there, eg Taruffi in 1952, when his Ferrari was the fastest car, but he was really slow. I think same applies to Berger 1994; his Ferrrari 412 was fast, but he and Alesi were...

Like Moby, I remember being pleased at Barrichello's 2002 German GP win. Barrichello said he was crying on the podium, not because he was emotional over the win, but he was thinking aboutthe time his father sold their (only) old, small car to fund further kart racing. Button's win for Honda in 2006 ...

Nuvolari the greatest? Many have reckoned thirties driver Nuvolari was the greatest of all. He certainly did perform at an amazing level until into his mid-forties. MDS: the last part of my post was badly worded. What I meant was that one has to consider how much slower the car was compared to the top/fastest, ie the gap. It does seem that in some cases, Siaou's saying 'fan bias' generates many arguments, applies. Rosberg has been really fast from day one against Webber, then...

Re: Driver's careers ended/damaged by other, better drivers
The Alonso-Vettel comparison at Ferrari, like most analysis of F1, is not straightforward. Alonso's Ferraris 2010-2013 were faster than Vettel's Ferrari's 2015-2016. Ie Alonso 's cars were closer to the front-runners. By my calcs just by an average of 0.2. But at this level of racing this 0.2 can ma...

Old road type circuits: almost as beautifully set as Spa was the Bremgarten Circuit in Berne. This was also a really old road, with some cobbled sections, winding through the ancient Bremgarten Park. Some of the huge trees must have been hundreds of years old. The first Swiss GP race here was in 193...

My package speeds are taken direct from times as recorded on-track. These most accurately reflect the competition. The observation by Zoue that Alonso had fewer dips in his performance than Hamilton (or Vettel), seems accuirate to me. Rindt really knocked Graham Hill's confidence and reputation at Lotus in 1969. They two did not like each other.
