Re: Evolution of F1 lap times since 1996

Still, I like a good graph. I wonder if a graph of speeds rather than times would give any more visual information? I struggled at first trying to understand that more was slower/longer. Do you know the total distance for all the circuits in each year? That's definitely another way of doing it, and...

Re: Evolution of F1 lap times since 1996

This would be even more interesting going back to the run up to 1995 and the effects of Senna's accident on the authorities attempting to slow the cars. Run up to the end of the last turbo era would also be interesting. Agreed. I'd actually like to run it all the way back to 1950 when time permits ...

Evolution of F1 lap times since 1996

Hi all, Not sure if something like this has been done before, but thought I'd share the results of an analysis I ran of quickest lap times since 1996. So these are the quickest times of the weekend, whether they were set in qualifying (as in most cases), during practice (if e.g. qualifying was wet) ...

Women's F1 series

Just throwing this out there. How would you feel if there was a women only F1 series, which would function as a support race for the main championship? While I realise that the ideal situation would be to have female drivers in F1 who are competitive with the male drivers (i.e. genuinely fighting it...

Do you think you would've been an F1 fan in the old days?

Recently I've been watching videos and looking at photos from F1 in the 50s, 60s and 70s. It reminded me just how brutal, and in my opinion flat out insane the sport was back then. Brick walled houses 2 metres from the side of the track, people standing right next to the racing line at Eau Rouge, an...

Re: New Qualifying Format Binned Official (Not Really)

Why not just create a spec rim. It's not as though rims are a hugely impactful performance variable. Mount the Q3 tyres on those beforehand then in the break the tyres are quickly delivered to each team and whacked on. Problem solved. No wastage. Besides, if we're talking about wastage. How about th...

What should F1's core values be?

I feel as though F1 almost needs to be torn down and started again. In which case, what are the most important things F1 needs to feature or strive towards - what are it's core values? And what are its secondary values? Those that are nice to have but not at the expense of its core values? For me......

Inspired by the thread on popularity and cause I love polls! :D

Imagine the F1 field was a grade in high school. Who would be the driver every other driver would want to hang out/be seen with?

Re: How did Damon Hill end up at Williams?

I suppose you could make a similar argument for someone like Hamilton or Villeneuve. But nowadays it'd be similar to... 1. Rosberg throwing the dummy at the last moment before the season next year and being replaced by Wehrlein 2. Werhlein challenging Hamilton every now and then but not really havin...

Re: How did Damon Hill end up at Williams?

So seems the summary is... Hill got the test drive gig because he was solid if not spectacular in F3000, an up and coming British driver (which attracted Williams) and had the famous name to go with it. He then got the F1 drive because... - Mansell had left and therefore they needed a replacement, b...

How did Damon Hill end up at Williams?

This one's always confused me. From what I can tell, Damon's lower formula career was solid but not spectacular. I get that he had the Hill name and this would've generate some interest but: 1. Why was he selected to be test driver at Williams in 1992 despite being yet to win a race in F3000? 2. Wha...

Re: If F1 really did 'collapse'

You've accounted for it in your poll, but for me the overriding factor would be the quality of the drivers. Forget the teams with tradition, wherever the best drivers are, that's what I'll watch. Unfortunately given that one series has a budget cap and the other doesn't, I'd imagine the best talent ...

Easy solution

Safety car goes in. Drivers line up on the grid in the same order as before and are released based on their gap to the leader before the safety car. They could get a green light on their dash hen its their turn for example

Re: Which driver has the hottest wife/girlfriend?

It always struck me as weird in F1 that EVERYONE seems to have a longterm girlfriend, and these are mostly young guys in their 20's. There seems to be a much lower density of 'single' in the f1 driver population sample than in the general outside world. Perhaps its because of the move around lifest...

Re: Best sounding F1 engine of all time?

All F1 engines, especially before V8 era sound very good. It was a joy to listen them on old Hockenheim Track's huge straights. But, for me, the best sound of an F1 car was the sound of Mercedes-Ilmor engine of McLaren (around 97-01) while downshifting before a slow turn coming from a long straight...

Helmet costs $13000 ??? LOOOOL thats ridiculous.
