Re: How do you feel about the Red Bull penalty for breaching the budget cap?
I asked one of our finance guys at work about this. He doesn't follow F1, but he's familiar with cost caps in other sports. His preliminary thoughts are (filtered through my ignorance of accounting vocabulary): - It's normal to assume that tax rebates will happen. In some industries, you're legally ...

Re: 2022 U.S. Grand Prix Race Thread
Just a little note concerning the car being missed during the race; I don't believe it is the task of the race director or the technical delegate to keep track of the detailed technical status of the car during the race. That is something for the team to do. Having said that, I do think it is very ...

Re: 2022 U.S. Grand Prix Race Thread
I get why Haas did it; asking for consistency is good. But the answer from the FIA should've been, "You're right, we should've shown Alonso the flag and we'll review our procedures so that it's applied more consistently in the future." Instead, the message from the FIA is that teams need to self-mea...

Re: BREAKING NEWS... Michael Masi Removed As Race Director
The firing was warranted even if you exclude the end of the last race. He lost control of the season early on, and it was never clear what was legal and how penalties were determined. While I think Verstappen's lap 6 pass was fair and disagree with the decision made, the real problem was that we did...

I always believed that Masi’s intentions were to try and finish under green flag race conditions but this information really does change things now. How the race director could be so easily manipulated by one team is staggering. I think all F1 fans accept that the result can’t and shouldn’t change ...

Re: Abu Dhabi 2021 - How has it left you feeling?
Opinions will differ about who deserved to win the championship, but it's an incontrovertible fact that Hamilton was faster all day except when Perez tactically slowed him down, after which he pulled away again. Being faster for one lap on fresh rubber after the gap was artificially wiped out isn't...

Re: Abu Dhabi 2021 - How has it left you feeling?
After rewatching the race, I've come around to the opinion that Max's lap 1 overtake should've been allowed and Hamilton should've had to return the position. It's totally debatable, and indeed it looks like opinions are pretty evenly divided... and it's something I'd like to see the FIA talk about ...

Would Red Bull be able to take any previous decisions to court in response? e.g. try get Hamilton's ineffectual penalty at Silverstone increased to cost him a place or two.
Re-litigating just one decision of many feels incomplete.

On the other hand... Vettel was also a fast driver who lost championships due to mistakes. Probably a good idea ...

I saw the same on the BBC News gossip, but that often picks up things that are no more than rumour. Think I'll wait for more reliable sources than DM & PF1. It's not that big a surprise. Re: Confirmed - McLaren Renault & Toro Rosso Honda?
I know that Toro Rosso are breaking their contract with Renault, but it seems odd that they're allowing Sainz to join Renault as part of this deal. It makes some sense - breaking a contract is expensive, and they're giving up Sainz as part of the payment to Renault. What I'm saying is that there is...

Interesting stuff here: https://joesaward.wordpress.com/2017/09/06/pure-speculation/ Like most people, Joe Saward expects McLaren to use Renault engines and Honda to supply STR. Re: Vettel's penalty - fair?
I think it was fair. It was the worst on-track penalty available to the stewards, and Vettel didn't cause any damage. It's an exaggeration to call it dangerous based on that outcome. As others have pointed out, outcomes do play a role in determining the penalties. I also feel that the stewards would...

That Vettel hit Hamilton on purpose is not in question. I think the degree to which Hamilton slowed down on the exit of the corner is the point of debate. A shame? Hardly. Should have happened a long time ago, when she sold the same seat to two different drivers. I got some info from IndyCar fans who have a better idea of what happened between Sato and Helio Castroneves at the end. Basically, the stronger Honda engine was key. I'll have to look into your claim that McLaren is slower in the races than Sauber. I'm really not convinced of that but I will take a look. Personally, I would do away with almost every technical rule the designers have to abide to these days. I doubt it would have done much for Bianchi to be honest. Such a construction probably would have saved Henry Surtees and Jus...

They probably will, and that's fine. We tend to think of each race as simply another event in the course of a season, but to some people each grand prix is an annual event. From that point of view, the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix is more of an anniversary than the Hungarian GP was.

Isn’t it just tire degradation being more pronounced than it used to be?
