Re: Motorsports and Risk

Safety in F1 is a laudible notion, however there are limits to how far it can be taken. If you're piloting a 650KG vehicle around an enclosed track at speeds approaching 220 on some straights and hitting 160+ on some high speed corners, there'll always be a risk. The problem today is two-fold howeve...

Re: Its like the Powers-that-be want F1 to fail and die!

The problem with F1 is that, as a business enterprise, it's ability to generate revenue has now completely changed. In the past, when television audiences had very little choice in how they viewed anything (let alone specific sports), there was an effective, captured audience. The vast majority of o...

Re: The direction of F1

The problem with modern F1 is the clear paradox between forcing teams to save money by limiting the numbers of engines/gearboxes etc... As well as making the engines run so far inside the limitations of the technologies (fuel flow/rev limits etc)..... Whilst at the same time the complexity of the 'd...

Re: Sky Sports lands exclusive F1 television coverage in UK

All this decision does is prove that the F1 hierarchy is not interested in the fans of the sport. Whilst I appreciate that F1 is a global, multi-billion pound collossus, without giving access to the greatest number of viewers they are massively cutting down the advertising potential on which a great...

Re: Token System to be scrapped in 2017

The problem with F1, is that it's supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport. The absolute cutting edge of technology, poured into making the fastest single seat racers, which should be able to (year on year) beat the lap record of each track they go to. But, the march of technology is such that we'...

Re: Who will be 2016 WDC?

It's Hamilton's to lose. Rosberg isn't as quick, or as consistent. The Ferrari's are probably the only other cars which could challenge for race wins, but I don't think it will be week in/week out. But then again it's only Vettel in that team who seems to be hungry for a win, and is up it! Everyone ...

Re: 2016 Renault vs. Honda - Battle of the laggards

I think it will come down to the simple notion of which engine/layout/turbo/ERS requires the simplest fixes. Honda showed through 2105 their engine was easier to develop than Renault's, but it also depends on how much money both teams are willing to throw at the current engine. Now they know that th...

Re: Maldonado's Terrible Luck

Never been a fan of Maldonado, lucky or unlucky. He's quick, perhaps not as quick as Grosjean, and he's great to watch when he's got the hammer down. But as we all know, in order to finish a race, you have to complete the distance. When rookie drivers can come into F1 year after year and, generally ...

Grosjean for me as DOTD. Was so close to getting third in quali, but admitted he had made a mistake that cost him... 9th on the grid after a gearbox penalty, ultimately, and drove a pretty flawless race. Overtaking others, pushing hard when he needed to and, above all, keeping out of trouble in orde...

Re: Exploding Pirellis

Tyres in F1 today are designed to a specification that those in power asked them to. That spec was for a range of tyres that would degrade at a (relatively) predictable rate, which would allow teams to decide on a pit-stop strategy, but would also allow for in-race changes as required. Pirelli did t...

Re: Which other drivers have actually quit

I also agree with the majority on here that the idea of 'quitting' at the top is virtually unheard of in F1. Drivers are either forced out of a 'top' team and retire due to either age or not being able to garner a seat at a 'lower' team... Or they do what Massa is doing this year, and get forced out...

Re: Question on Aero and why cars are 'smooth'

I might be being stupid here, but I am sure I read that an F1's drag coefficient (Cx) was well over 90, compared to a modern roadcar having about 30... Now, I understand that this is down to the nature of 'downforce', disrupting the airflow to push the car down onto the track surface. But, a lot of ...

Re: Official Tyre Thread

I agree..... The nominal notion of racing went out of the window yesterday. When race engineers are telling drivers to lift in certain corners, and that they have to maintain a certain lap time (which under a constantly reducing fuel load should NEVER happen) just makes it a contest of artificial at...

For me it was the 80's, and yes... that's when i started watching the racing. Re: A rounded review about the tyre situation (good and bad)

I am not a fan of the 'tyre situation'. It isn't racing if mechanical grip is so compromised by tyre wear and unpredictable (and seemingly total) loss of grip (when a tyre 'falls off the cliff) demands drivers either 'race' for perhaps 2 laps before sittinng 3 seconds back for the remainder of their...

The left hander was a tight corner with the track dropping away. Vettel slowed down to take a tight line, so he could get his car straight as quickly as possible so as to be able to accelerate away.... as quickly as possible. At that stage in the race, with everyone jostling for position..... Attack...

I haven't got time to read through every post on here.... My question about Eddie was slightly rhetorical, in that I was aware he wasn't going to be at every race... Re: In total support of Vettel

What is important to understand is that the race today was a relatively unique situation. Red bull had the top 2 spots sewn up, Mercedes 3rd and 4th. The team principles of both teams (correctly) decided that it was in the best interests of the TEAM to stick with the running order after the last rou...

One of the things that make memorable coverage of any sport, especially when it's a double act (or triple/quadruple... or more!) is that the presenters have some level of chemistry. Vettel knew what he was doing. He thought he'd done enough to be ahead after the last pit stop, but wasn't quite..... He then disobeyed an order from the team principle to hold station, and manage the tyres/fuel.... For the benefit of the team. Choosing instead to risk both cars in order to win. Whi...

Re: Mercedes Playing Favourites?

Ultimately the decision falls with the team principle. Mercedes' drivers followed the instructions, whilst one of the Red Bull drivers blatantly ignored the orders he was given. It does throw it into contrast. Vettel as a three time world champion, and Rosberg with one win for the team and paired up...

I remember at the time, most people were annoyed because of the decent odds they got for Coulthard winning the race.
When he let Hakkinen pass for the win, they was such an outcry of foul play!
But there were a lot of Bookies who didn't see it that way!

Re: Vettel: "Mark is too slow get him out of the way" [MERGE

As Horner said, post-race..... They were allowed to 'race' one another until the final pit-stops were completed. Vettel did brilliantly to get that close to the lead coming out of the pit-lane, but he was in second place when the cars got round the first corner. Ergo, Vettel was obliged to obey the ...
